I met him at one of his book signings, which was not totally free because I bought his book though it was not required. I got a photo with him but he was rather disengaged (with me at least, and some others) but then was very engaged with people who told him they'd been to his restaurant and such, a couple people seemed to maybe know him 3rd or 4th hand (connections thru friends of friends kind of thing). Surprisingly he didn't seem bothered by being asked to sign bunches of albums...
I wouldn't say it was a "letdown" but frankly rather underwhelming.
