No matter how many people it takes to replace him. It could be 1, it could be 200. He does deserve better and it certainly wasn't Stevie's place (of all people!) to terminate his career with the band.
Having said that, I think she would have found her way into the music industry with or without Lindsey. It would have taken longer without him, but she would have achieved her goal at some point in her life.
