Also, is Bob Weston British or American?? (I can't remember offhand right now!)  If he's American, then there's another factor -- British people and American people have a *very* different sense of humor.....

Yes I think there is a difference. Didn't Oscar Wilde describe us as "two nations divided by a common language"?
Sometimes we Brits have what we like to think of as a very dry sense of humour (John McVie) but it can come across as sarcastic/rude.
