Former Fleetwood Mac guitarist Lindsey Buckingham has performed live for the first time since undergoing emergency open heart surgery.
Lindsey underwent surgery at the start of February and suffered vocal cord damage during the procedure. All of his upcoming live dates were put on hold to allow him time to recuperate.
In his first public appearance since the operation, over the weekend Lindsey performed Fleetwood Mac’s 1975 classic ‘Landslide’ on acoustic guitar at his daughter Leelee’s high school graduation ceremony.
With Leelee and other students on vocal duties, it’s still currently unclear whether the vocal cord damage Lindsey suffered earlier in the year is permanent.
Lindsey’s wife Kristen shared video footage of the performance on Instagram and wrote on Twitter: “Last night was epic. First time I’ve seen Lindsey play in the last 4 mos, all the while Leelee ending her high school career. AND she sings a little ‘Landslide’ with her dad. I cried, I’ll admit it. Never know what’s ahead so enjoy the moment…”
She later added: "The love and support for Lindsey and our family from all of you means the world. Thank u! Please think good thoughts this week and send L the best healing vibes as we head east to meet with vocal specialist. We’re ready for whatever is next. Love conquers all.”
The emergency heart surgery in February came after a tumultuous 2018 for Lindsey, which started with him being fired from Fleetwood Mac in acrimonious circumstances.
After slamming the band, and, in particular Stevie Nicks, in several interviews, Lindsey filed a lawsuit against Fleetwood Mac in October before they reached an out of court settlement two months later.
Referencing their difficult time, Kristien Buckingham said in February: "This past year has been a very stressful and difficult year for our family to say the least. But despite all this, our gratitude for life trumps all obstacles we have faced at this moment. We feel so fortunate he’s alive. As does he. He looks forward to recovery and putting this behind him.”
Lindsey’s former Fleetwood Mac band mates play two shows at London’s Wembley Stadium next month.
