It sounds good in theory, but I can't think of a single instance where this approach was particularly successful. It's a gimmick, and to me it seems like you are "devaluing the brand" when you start giving stuff away for free. Perhaps it might be okay for some indie act just getting started, but for an established artist, it reeks of desperation.
