I think "The Chain" gained a whole new aspect of power on the 1982 tour. I think the impression is especially strong for those of us who experienced the performances of the song on the 1980 tour first--with its creeping, unbearably suspenseful buildup. I remember my excited surprise on hearing "The Chain" live at wherever it was I first saw Mac on the 1982 tour. The pumped-up tempo was a major contrast to earlier tours; it was like a jolt of electricity, a whole different feel. I remember thinking that the band couldn't
possibly maintain the speed & the emotional freneticism, and then being amazed that they
did maintain it, right through to that final whipped E minor.
