Nigel was trying to make some money, this is certain, but he was also trying to make a commercially successful band with Peter. You only have to listen to End of the Game to know why Nigel didn't really want to go down that road...

Mentally ill people can be challenging at the best of times, and I think that is often forgotten when people talk about Nigel's dealings with Peter.

I think that's the crux of the problem, Peter wasn't out playing for commmercial success, he just wanted to have fun as a musician. I think by this point Peter wasn't going to give away his money, he left Mich Reynolds in charge of the financial situation. After seeing Peter's extensive guitar collection tucked away in a storage facility, I think he'd gone beyond the point of giving all of his material items away.
It's hard to say what "commercial success" Nigel could've brought Peter in the late 90's/early 00's. As long as Peter was happy, there was no point in pressing the issue. Mike Dodd is handling Peter Green very well, with little pressue applied. The result are tour dates Mario didn't think were going to happen after the first run in February.
BTW, I'm a fan of "End of the Game" (most of it anyway). "Bottoms Up" is a great tune.
