I don't think he realized until it was too late just how bad things got. Alcoholism can do that sometimes.

I know what you're saying, but it really wasn't the case with this relationship. Christine didn't divorce John because she no longer loved him. In fact, she continued to wear her wedding ring on her middle finger. And, she wrote
Don't Stop for him. I think Chris really wanted things to work with John, but his demons got in the way.
