Which was ultimately aborted by Mick & John after the one album. Had they carried on with that lineup, I think brighter days would've ensued upon release of the next album. But, alas, Mick & John decided to take the easy road and go for "nostalgia" rather than forge new territory.
Or he thought he could get Stevie and Lindsey back to make new material. . . which resulted in a reunion tour/cd/video (The Dance), a new album in 2003 (the GREAT Say You Will), and a nostalgia tour.

Just because that's how it turned out (with only Say You Will as an effort to "forge new territory" in 15 years), doesn't mean that's what Mick intended.

Imagine paying $1000 to hear "Don't Dream It's Over" instead of "Go Your Own Way"

Fleetwood Mac helped me through a time of heartbreak. 12 years later, they broke my heart.
