They were still there as of '97. You can see them clearly in that large photo that was in Guitar World Acoustic (I believe it was GWA anyway.. the one where they airbrushed stubble and green eyes on him on the cover  ). I wouldn't know where to find it now, other than scanning it when I get home, but it's the photo that has him surrounded by ivy or whatever.
Edit. Here's the photo, found it on BuckinghamNicks.net They look at bit smaller here... maybe he's had them removed to some extent.
