That statement sounds more than slightly hyped-up. He took a swipe at her...that's a big difference than "beating the crap" of out her.
Yeah, Lindsey is a hothead - that's no surprise; he's always been that way. While it's not justifiable to resort to physical violence, Stevie was also in hot head mode at the time. He was probably trying to knock some sense into her.
