I had an English professor once who said that the folks who work in advertising are the smartest in any business because they know how to manipulate the public better than anyone else. I had another professor who did a unit on advertisements with us, and she was all about how evil advertisers are. She would take some seemingly innocent ad in a magazine and tell us how the bastards were manipulating the hell out of us. I think she was right, though.
