I hope Rhino can stay afloat with these boutique releases. Most of these things probably don’t sell more than 5,000 copies. Nobody really hears about them, to begin with. Certain bands probably trigger more interest, like Dylan or the Eagles, but I can’t believe that live material from Fleetwood Mac interests anyone beyond a few thousand. I wonder how much it costs Rhino to pull one of these live albums together. Costs include licensing (maybe?), mastering, and printing. Marketing is just a YouTube video — you never see a display ad in
Rolling Stone or elsewhere.
Twenty-five dollars times 5,000 copies is . . . $125,000. I dunno. Seems really marginal. Are these labors of love? Maybe Rhino makes it all up in volume of releases with dozens of bands represented.
