Just passing on what Richard Dashut said on his blog. Having actually spent time with John, he may know better. Here are his exact words (and the question he was answering):

As far as the joint goes, I don’t think so because John didn’t smoke pot and didn’t like it. The cap on the other hand I can neither confirm or deny, I just don’t know, probably just a prop for the pic?
