Mac attack! Fleetwood Mac returns to the studio and road for a 'beautiful new chapter'

They could go their own way, but not for long. Because loving them is the right thing to do. And chains (of a musical kind) keep them together.

Of course, we're talking about Fleetwood Mac, a band whose members have been together nearly 50 years — on and off — and who recently thrilled fans of multiple generations by not just reuniting to make new music, but by deciding to hit the road for a greatest hits tour, too.

This is a beautiful new chapter in the saga of this band," Lindsey Buckingham told TODAY, just as he and fellow band members Christine McVie, John McVie, Stevie Nicks and Mick Fleetwood were set to kick off their 34-city tour in Minneapolis Monday night.

Anyone who knows anything about the Mac knows that their rocky interpersonal relationships (Buckingham and Nicks were a longtime couple; the McVies were married) and skyrocketing success after their self-titled 1975 album led to serious problems backstage.

But it also fueled the band's musical energy and inspired some of their greatest hits. Christine McVie left the band seemingly for good in 1998, but rejoined early in 2014. Within months the band was back in the studio recording.

"It's re-ignited something in all of us I think that's been really profound," McVie said of this new chapter, including the tour. "The power that the audience have drives you on."

Fleetwood Mac will perform on the TODAY plaza Thursday, Oct. 9, and are currently on tour.
