Don't come around here no more

I heard this song on the radio coming home from work today. I had a flashback to when I first heard the song. I remember the anticipation of the first single and thinking I heard Stevie sing back up on the "Don't come around here no mores".
Am I the only one that heard this? I know she does not sing back up on the song but I think my mind was making me hear her because there was speculation she was working on Southern Accents with Tom. I remember being shocked she was not on the record or album.
Tell me was I just too Stevie crazy in 1985 or did anyone else faintly hear her back up on the track? Sharon Celani sings back up so maybe my ears did pick up the Stevie sound on the song.

Some sick ironies about this album and song. Both Southern Accents and Rock A Little were released in 1985. BOTH albums were delayed about a year due to extremely heavy drug use. Tom recorded Rebels in 1984 and was angry about the track and was so high that he punched a wall and broke his hand. I remember open speculation on the radio like what in the world is holding up Tom and Stevie's records?
Another sick irony is that Jimmy Iovine walked out on the Rock A Little recordings late in the game. Tom Petty hired Jimmy Iovine later in the process to finish Southern Accents. Even more crazy is the track Don't Come Around Here No More was inspired by a drug fueled night at Stevie's house and Joe Walsh showing up.
Long live the 80s!

I remember reading that Stevie was present, along with Sharon, during the recording of the song and some sources state that she sang background vocals on it but went uncredited. What is sure is that her background singer did sing on it from one of our Q&A.

Thank goodness they survived those wild times! I also heard that she sang on it but wasn't credited, really not sure about that though. I think the part about it being inspired by Joe Walsh is true though. It's definitely a haunting song, and I do get a Stevie vibe from it.

I love this song. Always have, always will.

I am aware of the stories about the song and it being writing for Stevie and Tom recording the song etc. I know the rumors of Stevie being in the studio and maybe singing back up and not credited. I am curious if anyone hears her singing back up or its just me?

I hear her on the line "Don't come around here no more" In the Tom Petty documentary she talks about this song and says she sang on it.

I just listened to it and I don't hear her singing. On the first "don't come around here no more" possibly but overall I don't hear her.

I also remember hearing her singing somewhere buried in the mix.

I think her voice is most prominent on the 'around' in the chorus. That's where I can hear it.

I can hear her really well on it.

Great song. My favorite part is after the "give it up, stop" bit.

I did think it was well established that she was singing on this, although uncredited.

I listened to the song earlier with earbuds and I can definitely hear what sounds like Stevie's voice. It's a wonderful song.

This is definitely one of my favorite songs. If it means anything, I also hear her during the chorus very clearly. And I hear Sharon clearly, as well.

Thanks everyone for making me feel that I am not crazier than I am :)
I just remember hearing Stevie and wondering why she was not mentioned or credited. It was never mentioned even when Stevie spoke about the song. She herself never said...I SANG BACK UP.
I also think its strange that Tom would not credit Stevie. No big deal. Its just one of those things ;)
