Buckingham woos and wows at The Pabst

Buckingham woos and wows at The Pabst

From the time Lindsey Buckingham walked on The Pabst Theater stage and finger-picked the arpeggio opening to "Not Too Late" from his new album "Under the Skin," his audience was hooked.

By the time he finished the last of his Fleetwood Mac blasts from the past during a roughly 100-minute set, they were delirious.

Buckingham, playing before another crowded house at The Pabst Tuesday night, alternately wowed with his guitar prowess and wooed with delicate melodies from "Under the Skin," his other solo works and, of course, his days with Fleetwood Mac.

Wooing as he did with numbers like his hits "Trouble" and "Go Insane," Buckingham turned upbeat pop songs into dreamy, laconic lullabies, stripping them of their perkiness and giving them new meaning by turning them into lush ballads. "Go Insane" actually sounded less like a pop song and more of a plea of desperate longing.

But when he was rocking, as he did on "Tusk" and "Go Your Own Way," he risked starting a riot. On "Tusk," his band made just about as much rhythmic racket than the entire USC Trojan Marching band did on the original.

Buckingham alternated between soloing and playing with a four-piece band, and it was when he and the band were cutting loose that things got wild. On "I'm So Afraid" Buckingham literally pounded and clawed at his guitar while the band roared behind him. He did the same on "Tusk" and on a joyous "Go Your Own Way," where his blinding solos and crowd teasing -- he dipped at the edge of the stage into the crowd -- had the assemblage in a complete frenzy.

While he was largely stationary for his softer acoustic numbers, he became a rambling mass of contortions when he and the band were tearing it up.

That's not to say the mid-tempo stuff went ignored. Buckingham played a delightful versions of "Never Going Back Again," "Second Hand News" and "World Turning," on which his normal whisper-to-tenor voice turned to a low growl when he sang, "maybe I'm wrong but who's to say you're right."

If there was a flaw in the show, it certainly wasn't Buckingham's fault. But a bit of the crowd was unruly, and the wolf whistles and banshee howls often marred some of Buckingham's more intricate guitar work. It was a shame, because Buckingham was making some real magic when he wasn't interrupted by someone yelling "way to go Lindsey" or shouting a request for the next song. One drunk actually yelled for "Hypnotized," a Bob Welch-era song recorded before Buckingham was part of Fleetwood Mac.

Buckingham remained in command throughout, however, eventually taking a request during the encore "from the pretty lady in the back" who had been shouting all night for "Down on Rodeo" from the new album. Buckingham admitted that the song had been more or less unrehearsed, but no one would have known from his plaintive performance.

Although he was much of the instrumental creative force behind the pop-era Fleetwood Mac, Buckingham has always lived more or less in the band's shadow. Tuesday night, he proved he and his sidemen could carry off their own sound while capturing the Mac ethos all by themselves.

Please no yelling during songs folks. :distress: Wait until the song is completely over, then scream, yell, clap and holler.

Well, people, this 57 year old gets some acclaim dontcha think? And playing with a THREE-piece band. That's something he'd never done before on tour. I think you're all witnessing something very very, VERY special. Do you realize that?

That's when I was doing my whistling, or maybe once during him jammin on the guitar ??

I never heard any of the howling, though, that's kind of weird??

I did hear people yelling for arious songs - I was just sooooooooo happy that he was playing any ol' song!!!!!!:xoxo:

wondergirl9847 10-18-2006 01:44 PM

That's cool.

I have had too many experiences with stupid-a$$ people at concerts either...

A. Pushing and shoving
B. Being drunk and VERY ANNOYING
C. Yelling out stupid sh*t (do NOT get me started on the drunk chick from the Houston FM show...please. LOL)

Yelling and screaming is a requirement, IMO, at concerts, but yelling out stupid crap like "Where is Stevie?" or "I wanna have your babies!"...Yeah, not cool. LOL I don't go to concerts to get attention, I wanna enjoy the show. :)

Yeah, "where's Stevie," that's what he wants to hear. :p I was so damn upset at Stevie's Vegas show when people started yelling during Beauty & the Beast. Way to ruin the moment, jerkoffs.

Like you said, insane screaming & clapping between songs is awesome, but to shriek "you're so f*cking hot" during an intricate accoustic guitar solo is rude to Lindsey and to the rest of the audience. Oh, and to the guy recording the show next to you.

"Sing to me, Stevie!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

A lot of people were yelling crazy stuff at the 2004 FM show in Champaign. "You both don't suck!" and "We love you, Mick!" as Lindsey was preparing to sing "Big Love."

Christy, I remember your posts about the Houston chick. Are you SURE you don't want to end up next to her again?

That's what I meant...NOT during the song...after the song is completely over. I wanna hear the guitarwork especially on this tour.

wondergirl9847 10-18-2006 02:48 PM

Ack!!

I'd rather have hot pokers thrust into my eyes. LOL

Like ya'll said...who wants to hear that crap during the recordings of the shows. It's funny when someone yells something every once in a great while during a long lull but all the idiodic yelling is just annoying as h*ll.

ETA: Some people who crave attention go to shows just to try to get the performer to acknowledge them.

In london 11-29-2003, some weirdo yelled I KNOW I'm NOT WRONG! at exact the same moment in the show....and Lindsey smiled at the guy.

And he's still playing it.....But the weirdo never got to experience it....:distress:

When everyone knows the proper way to do that is by bringing enormous signs.

A man screamed out "RhiannA" at the Falls Church show. Lindsey did chuckle and walk to the mic. He said "I will take what I can get...I'll take it". He was good natured about it. That was the same show someone yelled "Buckingham Nicks". He really grinned at that one and said they were working on putting that out on CD.

As far as the screaming.....its ok if its in between songs. However, screaming that he is "so hot" and all that kind of crazy stuff seems to make him uncomfortable. He laughs nervously or just ignores most of it completely. In CT, (I think, my shows are running together) someone yelled "I LOVE YOU" and he walked to the mic and whispered "I love you, too". That was incredibly sexy.....he did it in this low, hoarse, bedroom voice. Stuff like that is fun but people go totally overboard trying to get a reaction from him.

LINDSEY#1FAN 10-18-2006 08:41 PM

I probable would wet my pants if I heard Lindsey say "I love you too" in a low sexy voice - that could bring some really nice dreams for me !!!

wondergirl9847 10-18-2006 09:48 PM

Totally.

He seems very uncomfortable when people yell out things like that. Now, when I held up my sign at the FM shows, he pointed at me a few times. I also have something to either try to hand him or throw up on stage at one of the last shows. ;)

About half the crowd stood up and danced during this song. The other half sat in their seats. The two men in front of me looked bored out of their minds. If that’s a riot then I’ll be damned! The crowd should have started a riot (with the great performance and Lindsey’s energy) but that wasn’t happening. Honestly, I was embarrassed for Lindsey! He deserves a better crowd reception.

There were a few whistles and howls, but nothing that I thought was obnoxious. In fact, I was happy for these moments, because it showed that some of us in the crowd were actually alive and awake for the performance! People clapped and cheered during Lindsey’s guitar solos as most of us would do, and shouted requests in between songs. I don’t recall anyone shouting requests in the middle of a different song.

I don’t think the request for “Hypnotized” was out of line, as Lindsey has performed the song in the past at Fleetwood Mac shows, but I think it probably would have been more appropriate at a Mac show.

I’m happy that I got to see Lindsey perform solo, but the sh*tty Milwaukee crowd will always (in my mind) cast a negative light on the show. I hope the crowd at the rest of Lindsey's shows are much better!

I have to agree with EVERYTHING that you said here. The crowd absolutely sucked !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I whistled quite a bit for him ! I kind of felt bad as sooo many -people were sitting down, and acted like they didn't even want to be there! I tried to make up for the people that seemed as if they were at a funeral instead of a Lindsey show!:distress:

I did my part to show Lindsey some love !!!!!:xoxo: I was whistling after every song !!!

Ok...I was at the Milwaukee Show and it was Excellent.
We were in the 5th row from the stage. We cheered, clapped, stood, danced and sat at appropriate times. For the most part, I don't know how rows 6 through ? behaved.

We did hear certain LEDGE MEMBERS screaming & whistling at inappropriate times....when the soft-spoken Lindsey was trying to speak or during quiet guitar moments etc.... It seemed very inappropriate. I know you were expressing your lust for him but...I don't think such a high-level musician wants cat-calls during a sensitive acoustic song. I would think he would want his musicianship appreciated..not his "hotness".

There were a few times when he welcomed conversation with the audience.

Save the poorly timed hoots and hollers for the next Clay Aiken show.
To reiterate...we love to have a good time at shows (stand/cheer/dance etc...) but...imagine a 55+ yr old woman with a gruff Lucille Ball-type smokers voice screeching and telling Lindsey he's "hot" or "fine" or whatever during a very slow, quiet acoustic version of GO INSANE. (cringe)

Save it for the rockin' segment of the show (Go Your Own Way etc...)
Thanks. Your fellow concert-goers (& maybe even Lindsey) will appreciate it.

That's funny !!!!! I didn't hear any 55+ year old lady with a gruff voice doing that???

I only whistled after the songs, and quite loudly !!!!

I was in Row E and didn't hear that during Go Insane????

Clay Aiken ???????????????
