Just thought I'd vent.

Since I transferred to my current school, college has felt a bit like having my self esteem repeatedly pummeled. Hence my embrace of message boards.
I've just found out I was blackballed from a Columbia society (at which I am a legacy) by a girl I went to high school with. I've known she was a snake since we were twelve, but she's been so friendly I wondered if I was being unfair. Nope.
One of the only bright sides of all of this is that I now have license to hate her forever. The downside: if I tell anyone we know, I come out looking jealous and pathetic (which...okay, granted). And so I turn to the internet.

GAH! People like that really get to me. It's funny how some people never seem to surpass being eleven years old and never seem to leave that young, bitchy stage behind.
BTW, what does being a 'legacy' mean ?
Hope everything works out for you

Thanks. Being a legacy means that family members have been in the society. Normally, a legacy is a shoe-in.

Ugh. Ranting about college societies probably sounds trivial; I realize that in the grand scheme, it is. But I'm so upset about this.

HomerMcvie 10-15-2011 02:14 PM

Were you given a reason for the blackballing?

No. I heard about it from my cousin. This girl just straight-up doesn't like me.
I, like everyone else in the world, have flaws, and I'm sure she has her reasons. We've known each other since we were five.
It really bothers me, though, that after pretending to be nice to me for the last two years and even inviting me to an occasional party, she would go behind my back like that. If a person doesn't like me, I wish she wouldn't pretend to like me. This girl is a snake, and always has been.

Oh I get it now, can't you appeal or something? I don't really know how these things work but I assume you can appeal ?

It's okay, your human, you can be a little selfish from time to time. I understand how you'd be upset about it, it's piss me off.

Nope. They're a semi-secret society. You don't contact them, they contact you. It's literally--

Dear Ms. Grace *******
The membership of ************* requests the pleasure of your company...
etc.

If someone wants you out, you're out.
For the record, I realize this group is magnificently douchey. If college hadn't been the loneliest time of my life, I would find the whole thing completely lame.

That's quite strange, are there different levels of membership or can anyone throw anyone out ?

I love the idea of a secret society though, it makes me think of luxurious private libraries, hidden passageways, fine tea and winding staircases. In reality though it's probably not that much like my overly romanticized imaginings, but a girl can dream right ?

Don't worry about them and their 'secret society', you got your own 'secret society', right here, well kinda ! x

It's odd that this came up, but I was asking a "Greek" friend of mine about this, a couple of days ago, and (at least here) he said that it only takes one person, saying no(with no explanation required), to kill your acceptance.

What a crappy system!

Hmmm...during a very innocent conversation with an elderly colleague today about holidays, I discovered that she had recently smuggled Drugs into the country. What do you say to that, for god sake lol?

wild-heart 10-16-2011 10:37 AM

I've spent the whole day sorting out my itunes folder.

Mezzo lose that license. Carrying that hate
inside you is the worse thing you could do
for yourself. Believe me I know. I have an
issue dealing with hate and it's eating me up
inside.

Turning to the internet can be a good thing.
The Ledge has many caring people who are
willing to help. At the very least, listen to
your problem(s).
