Mick Fleetwood Announces Concert to Honor Peter Green and Early Fleetwood Mac
 

Mick Fleetwood will host a one-of-a-kind concert honoring the early years of Fleetwood Mac and its co-founder Peter Green on February 25th at the London Palladium.

Fleetwood has enlisted an all-star cast of musicians to perform, including Billy Gibbons, David Gilmour, Jonny Lang, John Mayall, Christine McVie, Zak Starkey, Steven Tyler and Bill Wyman.

“The concert is a celebration of those early blues days where we all began, and it’s important to recognize the profound impact Peter and the early Fleetwood Mac had on the world of music,” Fleetwood said in a statement. “Peter was my greatest mentor and it gives me such joy to pay tribute to his incredible talent. I am honored to be sharing the stage with some of the many artists Peter has inspired over the years and who share my great respect for this remarkable musician.”

Fleetwood will act as the house band alongside Andy Fairweather Low, Dave Bronze and Ricky Peterson, and producer Glyn Johns will be the executive sound producer for the concert. The event will be filmed for eventual release and directed by Martyn Atkins.


Exclusive pre-sale tickets go on sale Wednesday November 13th at 10 a.m. GMT while public tickets go on sale Friday November 15th at 10 a.m. GMT via Ticketmaster. A donation from the event will go to Teenage Cancer Trust, a U.K. charity dedicated to providing specialist nursing and emotional support to young people with cancer.

Green co-founded Fleetwood Mac in 1967 alongside Fleetwood, John McVie, Jeremy Spencer and Danny Kirwan. Fleetwood told Rolling Stone in 2017 that there was little possibility of the original lineup of the band reforming down the road.

“I went there many years ago,” he said. “We got into it and we were going to put a whole thing together at the [Royal] Albert Hall. This is years and years and years ago. Probably about 15 years ago. And right at the last minute, Peter, in the world that he lives in, just suddenly pulled out. … Suddenly it was not a good idea. And we had put a whole bunch of things together, I had even booked the venue. So I would never do that again.”

love the idea of honoring original FM and Peter Green, with some of the greats contributing.

but ------- cannot stand Mick Fleetwood though, so even if i lived in London and was intrigued by the lineup (and donation of at least small part of the money to something other than Mick), i just wouldn't be able to make myself go. knowing what we know about Mick and the "current" band, he's probably trying to stretch ways to make money more than honoring Peter, while still banking on the FM name. because doesn't he do all those early FM songs with FM Blues band but in that case cannot make enough money for his over-lavish lifestyle? he's looking for different ways to bank on FM name in case Nicks finally boots him completely. and also making sure that FM is non synonymous with Nicks, which is what his actions from the last 2 years may have led to.

re John McVie - that's a weird one - you'd think if he was participating that he would be listed. than again, maybe Mick threw him under the bus because his name is not big enough? or John finally had enough of Mick?

or maybe after such a long slog on the road John would just like to have some down time at home with family. This is a man who has survived cancer after all, and none of them is getting any younger. Perhaps he has quietly, privately made the decision that regardless of what the rest do this is HIS last tour, and he's done performing for the most part?? :shrug:

if so, wish he made that decision BEFORE this last tour, when it actually meant something.

Mick may be looking into assembling something he can tour and make money as a "reformed early FM" kinda like Queen and the Eagles tour now in their money-making chimeric forms, now when the "classic" FM seems to be all miked up. depending on how successful this concert is and whether some of the people he assembled would like to join for actual tour... other than Gilmour and Steven Tyler, everyone else in that all star lineup tours 100-seat intimate venues, if that, and nobody tours anywhere near arena-size venues.

I find it strange that Mick is trying to "honor" Peter Green. But then he turns around with a negative comment like this...

Respectfully...it seems like this thread belongs in "The Early Years". This "one off" project has nothing to do with the "Present Band".

At least we know what all of the "Evening With" line-up are doing next. We can safely assume John will just go back to his yacht - he never seems to do any musical activity away from the band.

Agreed. A friend sent me a link to the poster for the concert, so I came to the Ledge to see what I could find out, and almost gave up after looking under the Early Years, Peter, and Christine forums. Moderators, move the thread, please.

The press for this doesn't imply that Peter himself will be performing. It will be Mick with a cast of several other musicians, many of whom are pretty darn famous. I think it sounds like a good thing. As much as Mick has proven himself to be largely motivated by greed, even that can lead to a positive result sometime.

I really, really hope Chris polishes up her blues piano chops and does some REAL playing in this concert. And how about a DVD of the show?

Too bad they cant have a concert of the people that Mick has screwed over his lifetime. You just would have to exhume bodies. But I would love to see Bob Welch, Bob Weston, and Lindsey on stage together. Now THAT would be a concert I would fly over the pond for.

I think tickets will be very, very hard to come by. The Palladium is a big theatre but not massive. I think tickets will be priced accordingly.
Hope they give some honour towards Danny Kirwan as well as Peter. After all, its Danny that's sadly no longer with us.

strangely, none of Fleetwood Mac official social media mentions this event honoring Peter Green and early Fleetwood Mac.

in contrast, Fleetwood Mac official facebook page advertised:

3. Nicks RnRHoF induction.
4. Neil Finn and son's release of their new album.
5. in 2017, Mick's book release and his band's tour of Australia. same with Nicks' solo tour of Australia.

yet they do not mention a huge tribute concert to early Fleetwood Mac years and FM founder Peter Green, put together by Fleetwood Mac band members.

Another cash grab. If Peter were there it would be a real tribute (while he's still alive) especially if he would play. This is all about the cash for Mick. He's reeling people in by saying that parts of the proceeds will go to charity. Translation: he's keeping most of the $$. :rolleyes:
John not participating is weird but like most said, he has survived cancer and he probably needs a break.
I hope they have the decency to honor Danny Kirwan as well. He wrote some great songs for FM.

I think John not participating is a sign John is over the band. He may have been contractually obligated for this world tour but not going to do one show to honor Peter Green? Hard to believe. Maybe its a sign how over the band he has become. John and Mick stuck together for the toughest times. I remember them playing clubs in 1994 as Fleetwood Mac.

Maybe he's just ready to retire. I think they all deserve a chance to relax and live out their remaining years.

With all the band bashing that I have read over the many, many years, the one topic we can all agree on is how money grubbing Mick is. One has to wonder what people in his personal life say about him to each other.

Mick is nothing but bottom feeding scum. I doubt he's surrounded by an army of yes people like $tevie is. I only hope he knows what many think of him.

Tonight Mick Fleetwood will take to the stage in central London with an all-star cast to honour the early years of Fleetwood Mac and its founder, Peter Green. This one-of-a-kind concert will be recorded and film and issued as a special super deluxe edition box set later in the year.

I don't think I will ever buy a Fleetwood Mac a (any media) music again.

But I'm curious to see what Christine or Gilmour will perform in that show.

Christine sang “Stop Messin’ Round” with Steven Tyler and Rick Vito on lead guitar, while Gilmour did “Albatross” with Rick Vito.

Jeremy Spencer apparently played, too. Too bad John skipped it.

some reviews besides wildly inaccurate Ultimate Classic Rock one are starting to pop up - so we can actually know who was there and what happened (UCR for example listed John McVie who was not there).

also, there was a Ledgie at this show who tweeted some nice sinppets so hopefully he will post his review.

Mick Fleetwood has enjoyed a long and impressive career, though this is surely one of the highlights. A tall, bearded figure, he sits behind his drum kit and delightedly introduces the extraordinary cast he has managed to assemble for this tribute to one-time Fleetwood Mac partner Peter Green. From Britain, there is his one-time boss, the veteran blues hero John Mayall, along with David Gilmour, Pete Townshend, Bill Wyman and Noel Gallagher. The American contingent includes Billy Gibbons from ZZ Top, Steven Tyler from Aerosmith and Kirk Hammett from Metallica.

And then, of course, there are members of Fleetwood Mac, with whom he has now spent 53 years. They may be best known as a massively successful Anglo-American AOR band but Fleetwood wants their early years remembered. So he has curated this high-profile event (which is also filmed), focusing on the band’s role in the 60s British blues boom and the importance of Green, who quit Fleetwood Mac half a century ago. Fleetwood has described him as his “greatest mentor”.

Green was one of the guitar heroes, and casualties, of the 60s. He had the seemingly impossible task of taking over from Eric Clapton in Mayall’s Bluesbreakers, but did so in style. In 1967 he poached Fleetwood and bass player John McVie from Mayall and formed his own band, which he named after his rhythm section. They played self-written songs and classics by bluesmen such as Elmore James, and their first album was a hit. A series of successful singles showed that Green could also write thoughtful ballads and atmospheric instrumentals or edge towards heavy metal. But drugs – including a potent form of LSD – put an end to his Fleetwood Mac career in 1970.

This celebration of his work starts with the blues. Fleetwood drives the songs with his gently forceful, unflashy drumming, leading a house band that includes three classy guitarists – Rick Vito, Andy Fairweather Low and the Grammy-winning Jonny Lang. They could play alone for hours, but soon begin backing the special guests. Gibbons stomps efficiently through Doctor Brown; Tyler provides a furious, witty treatment of Green’s mildly risque Rattlesnake Shake; and Christine McVie gives a reminder of her blues roots with Stop Messin’ Around. Gallagher seems worried he is out of place (“I know what you’re thinking…”) but produces a fine, no-nonsense acoustic treatment of World Turning. Townshend describes his meetings with Green (“a sad figure”) and plays the rousing Station Man, a Fleetwood Mac song from after the Green era.

The finale is dominated by the hits. Neil Finn sings the sad and poignant Man of the World, while Gibbons and Tyler crash through the pained Oh Well (Part One) before Gilmour comes on to play the brooding guitar instrumental Oh Well (Part Two), apparently never heard on stage before. Black Magic Woman is followed by a real surprise: an appearance by Jeremy Spencer, one of the original four members of Fleetwood Mac, who quit in 1971 to join a religious cult. His slide guitar technique, voice and love of Elmore James are remarkably intact.

This intriguing show ends with Green’s most compelling song, the pained and paranoid Green Manalishi (With the Two-Prong Crown), performed by Kirk Hammett with suitable frenzy, and the lyrical, bestselling instrumental Albatross. If Green was watching, he should have been delighted.

Fleetwood Mac Peter Green Tribute

Mick Fleetwood led an all-star concert honoring Fleetwood Mac co-founder Peter Green and the early years of the band last night at London Palladium. Pink Floyd’s David Gilmour, The Who’s Pete Townshend, members of Fleetwood Mac and more were part of the benefit supporting Teenage Cancer Trust.

Fleetwood played drums with the evening house band that was made up of guitarists Andy Fairweather Low, Rick Vito and Jonny Lang, drummer Zak Starkey, bassist Dave Bronze and keyboardist Ricky Peterson. ZZ Top guitarist Billy Gibbons was among the first guests of the night, and would appear several times throughout, coming on stage for “Doctor Brown.” Aerosmith frontman Steven Tyler was up next, helping sing Otis Rush’s “All Your Love (I Miss Loving).” Legendary British bluesman John Mayall then came out for “Rattlesnake Shake.”

Fleetwood Mac keyboardist Christine McVie emerged next for a Tyler-led rendition of “Stop Messin’ Around” and “Looking for Somebody.” Oasis guitarist Noel Gallagher joined an acoustic segment consisting of “Sandy Mary,” “Love That Burns” and “The World Keep on Turning.” Townshend then took the stage for a performance of “Station Man,” the song that inspired the Grateful Dead’s “Passenger.” Current Fleetwood Mac guitarist and Crowded House member Neil Finn was brought out for “Man of the World.” Gibbons and Tyler then came back for “Oh Well, Part 1.” Gilmour’s first appearance came during the subsequent “Oh Well, Part 2.”


Former The Rolling Stones bassist Bill Wyman sat-in on a pair of Elmore James covers, “The Sky Is Crying” and “I Can’t Hold Out.” Metallica guitarist Kirk Hammett and Gibbons contributed to a performance of “The Green Manalishi (With the Two Prong Crown).” Gilmour then reemerged to add lap steel guitar to “Albatross.” Many of the night’s participants then shared the stage for a show-closing “Shake Your Moneymaker.”

Metallica's Kirk Hammett, Aerosmith's Steven Tyler and ZZ Top's Billy Gibbons performed in the all-star band that paid tribute to the music of Fleetwood Mac co-founder Peter Green on Tuesday (Feb. 25). Spearheaded by Fleetwood Mac's Mick Fleetwood, the celebration took place at the London Palladium.

Billed as Mick Fleetwood & Friends, the night's rotation also featured Pink Floyd's David Gilmour and Fleetwood Mac's Christine McVie. Oasis' Noel Gallagher, Jonny Lang, Andy Fairweather Low, John Mayall, Bill Wyman and Ringo Starr's son Zak Starkey took part as well. Watch some fan-captured footage of the concert below.

The whole thing will be documented in an extensive live album. To be released Oct. 19 as a "Super Deluxe" box set containing four vinyl records, two CDs, a Blu-ray disc and a photo book, Mick Fleetwood & Friends Celebrate the Music of Peter Green and the Early Years of Fleetwood Mac is available for pre-order now.

Green formed Fleetwood Mac with the group's namesake drummer in 1967. The act was more of a blues-rock combo before its heady days as a pop-rock radio behemoth. Green helped compose much of the group's early material before leaving the outfit in the early '70s. He went on to perform with the Peter Green Splinter Group and under the guise of Peter Green & Friends before seemingly retiring from the music spotlight in 2010.

But Green isn't completely inactive these days. Just last month, it was reported that Hammett — who now owns Green's "Green" 1959 Les Paul guitar — was working in the recording studio with the early Fleetwood Mac icon. It later emerged that the Metallica member sings on a tribute tune to the musician.

Mick Fleetwood brought together an all-star cast of classic rock musicians on Tuesday night for a special tribute to former Fleetwood Mac guitarist Peter Green.

The concert, held at The London Palladium, brought together former Fleetwood Mac members including Fleetwood, Christine McVie, and Jeremy Spencer, as well as Steven Tyler, David Gilmour, Billy Gibbons, Pete Townshend, Kirk Hammett, Noel Gallagher, and many more. Notably absent from the concert were Stevie Nicks, Lindsey Buckingham, and Green himself. The event also served as a benefit for the Teenage Cancer Trust in London.

The evening featued a dive through the early years of Fleetwood Mac, highlighting the band’s first few albums before Green left in 1970. Stand-out moments from the show included Gilmour taking up the pedal steel guitar on “Albatross”, Tyler doing his frontman thing on “Oh Well (Part 1)”, and the show-closing “Shake Your Money Maker” that saw the entire evening’s cast reconvene onstage. Peter Green Tribute Concert – “Green Manalishi” – 2/25

Mick has earned the reputation that he has but as far as this concert goes and whether Peter was there in person or not, I don't think it's fair to criticize him. I could see Peter feeling uncomfortable and not wanting to get on stage. Regardless of whether or not he was there, Peter most certainly deserved a tribute show and is worthy of any and all praise he received. Without knowing it he changed the world and although he wasn't part of Fleetwood Mac when they achieved their greatest commercial success, none of it would have ever happened had it not been for him. The caliber of talent that participated would be spectacular for more popular or better known artists and it's awesome they showed up to honor Peter.

someone said that at one point Mick looked like he was directly addressing Peter and then stopped himself - apparently getting a reminder from someone that Peter doesn't want his presence be known.

It’s def a novelty to hear Christine take the lead vocal on “Stop Messin’ Round.” She soldiered through it pretty well. But it’s a shame that the piano we heard wasn’t the piano she played — the tasty licks were coming from the guy in back of her.

Now off to hear some of the other performances.

Yeah--I noticed this only when I saw a video on a bigger screen. She played chords and did some more animated comping towards the end, but the sparkling playing came from the pianist in back of her. Why?

I was there too. tight seats in this old theatre ... but what a great night it was. Core-band on fire and the guest musicians were absolutely fab !!! Such a surprise to see Jeremy Spencer playing.
