"Everywhere" island style in Hawaii

Have you ever been in the Carribean or any other tropical location and heard really bad covers of rock songs done in a reggae/island way?

Well - I just got back from an incredible trip to Kaua'i and one morning I was in a surf shop in a tiny town on the north shore and without realizing it - suddenly Fleetwood Mac's "Everywhere" was coming out of the store's speakers.

It was pretty horrible - so bad that I didn't need to stay til the end - but I found it funny to be in one of the most remote areas in all of Hawaii and FM still manages to find me.

Kind of fun during a week of no tv, no radio, no internet - only local musicians...

Something very similar happened to me a couple of weeks ago: I was at a beach club in the south of Spain and at about 1am, somewhere between Kelis and Fatboy Slim, the DJ put on the album version of "Gypsy". I seemed to be the only surprised person there though, as a few hundred beautiful girls effortlessly carried on dancing away to the sounds of our favourite band, with the night waves of the Mediterranean to the left, the rest of the beach to the right, and the stars above. I did have to pinch myself to make sure I hadn't died and gone to heaven!:)

In the summer of 1987, I got to dance to "Seven Wonders" at a nightclub in the Virgin Islands. I was on a merchant marine training cruise the whole summer, and even got to hear the last half of the song on the radio in Rio de Janeiro. Luckily, they were still playing the video on MTV when I returned home in late August -- I almost missed the whole thing! And since we STILL don't have a FM video collection, I might never have seen it.

As for song covers, I never heard FM music, but I did hear a steel drum band play an awesome version of The Thomspson Twins' "Lies". "LIES, LIES, LIES ... YEAH!" I think this was in Grenada, but it could have been in Trinidad. On the cruise I turned 18, which is the legal Caribbean drinking age. And boy, did I make use of it before I had to return to the States for 3 more "dry" years.

dontlookdown - I wonder if the cover you heard was the one by Chaka Kahn (sp). Sounds like it. I'm not a fan of it myself either!
