RACHEL DESANTIS
NEW YORK DAILY NEWS

Rocker Tom Petty has been pulled off life support after being rushed to the hospital Sunday in cardiac arrest, TMZ reports.

The “Free Fallin’” singer, 66, was reportedly found unconscious and not breathing in his Malibu home, and was subsequently taken to the UCLA Santa Monica Hospital, where he "had no brain activity."

His condition is currently unclear, but the outlet reports that Petty has been critical since Sunday night.

The long-haired singer known for his gravelly voice recently wrapped a lengthy North American tour.

The Florida native is a Rock and Roll Hall of Famer best known for a string of hits with his band, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers.

Their most popular tracks include "I Won't Back Down," "Runnin' Down a Dream" and "American Girl."

Petty also helped form supergroup the Traveling Wilburys in the late '80s, which was comprised of Bob Dylan, George Harrison, Jeff Lynne and Roy Orbison. The legendary line-up recorded two albums together.

He's notched three Grammy wins over the years, and 18 nominations.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates.

This breaks my heart, he was one of my favourites; just three months ago he seemed so happy and lively.

michelej1 10-02-2017 02:44 PM

I cannot believe this. I am not even a Petty fan, but I've followed his career for so long, by his association with Macsters. This is the most awful news. Devastating. What a shock.

Tom Petty, legendary rocker, is dead at 66

Tom Petty, the rocker best known as the frontman of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, is dead at 66, CBS News has confirmed.

The legendary musician suffered a full cardiac arrest and was found unconscious and not breathing in his Malibu home Sunday night. He was taken to UCLA Santa Monica Hospital and put on life support, reports TMZ.

Petty rose to fame in the 1970s with his band, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. The group put out several hits, including "American Girl," "Free Fallin'," "Breakdown," "Listen to Her Heart" and more. The band was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2002.

Though Petty and his band debuted their first self-titled record in 1976, they continued to perform over the past four decades. Petty played his last show last Monday, performing three sold-out shows at the Hollywood Bowl to conclude their 40th anniversary tour. The band wrote on their website that the tour included 53 shows in 24 states.

In December, Petty told Rolling Stone that he thought this would be the group's last tour together. He said, "It's very likely we'll keep playing, but will we take on 50 shows in one tour? I don't think so. I'd be lying if I didn't say I was thinking this might be the last big one. We're all on the backside of our sixties. I have a granddaughter now I'd like to see as much as I can. I don't want to spend my life on the road. This tour will take me away for four months. With a little kid, that's a lot of time."

Petty, who released three solo albums and 13 albums with Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, also took part in the 1980s supergroup the Traveling Wilburys with Bob Dylan, George Harrison, Roy Orbison and Jeff Lynne.

Good lord. This is a huge loss. My condolences to his family and friends especially Stevie who is sure to be devastated by this horrible news.

Tom Petty, the dynamic and iconoclastic frontman who led the band the Heartbreakers, died Monday. He was found unconscious, not breathing and in full cardiac arrest at his Malibu home Sunday night, according to TMZ, and rushed to the hospital and placed on life support. EMTs were able to find a pulse when they found him, but TMZ reported that the hospital found no brain activity when he arrived. A decision was made to pull life support. CBS confirmed Petty's death. He was 66.

Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers recently completed a summer tour last Monday with three nights at the Hollywood Bowl. The trek marked the band's 40th anniversary and found him playing rarely played deep cuts like their first album's opener, "Rockin' Around (With You)," and a selection of Wildflowers cuts. It was intended to be his "last trip around the country." He told Rolling Stone, though, that it wasn't his intention to quit playing. "I need something to do, or I tend to be a nuisance around the house," he said.

In the late Seventies, Petty's romanticized tales of rebels, outcasts and refugees started climbing the pop charts. When he sang, his voice was filled with a heartfelt drama that perfectly complemented the Heartbreakers' ragged rock & roll. Songs like "The Waiting," "You Got Lucky," "I Won't Back Down," "Learning to Fly" and "Mary Jane's Last Dance" all dominated Billboard's rock chart, and the majority of Petty's albums have been certified either gold or platinum. His most recent release, Hypnotic Eye, debuted at Number One in 2014. Petty, who also recorded as a solo artist and as a member of the Traveling Wilburys and Mudcrutch, was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2002.

This story is developing.

michelej1 10-02-2017 03:17 PM

And you think to yourself ... I mean I saw Walter Becker on stage and he looked so unhealthy, so it wasn't a surprise to me. I thought that was coming. But with Tom Petty I just thought he'd be going strong for another 20 years, no matter how unrealistic that sounds. That's what I thought in my head, if I ever thought about it.

TheWildHeart67 10-02-2017 03:17 PM

I am devastated. Just so upset.
First, the Vegas shootings. Then one of my fave musicians of all time suddenly is dead.:distress:

Man, this October is already starting to suck. Reminds me of the past 40 Octobers... :distress:

TrueFaith77 10-02-2017 03:28 PM

I also thought of Stevie. :(

You don't have all the time in the world. What a reminder.

wilsonmac 10-02-2017 03:32 PM

Terrible news; one of the great songwriters. Worth mentioning that he and Lindsey were friends as well. Produced songs for the She's The One soundtrack with him and some tracks on The Last DJ, and the Johnny Cash Unchained album. RIP

Jondalar 10-02-2017 03:34 PM

I'm really upset over this. He was such a solid character and great artist. I never thought of him dying this young. This is a complete shock.

lilyfee 10-02-2017 03:47 PM

I feel crushed. Who could have seen this coming? Poor Stevie. I can’t imagine what she’s going through. Last summer’s festival comments take on new gravity. He meant so much to her. We have lost such a legend. RIP Tom Petty

Dreamz19 10-02-2017 03:48 PM

Wow I'm stunned by this. This day has been full of tragedy. I feel for his family and friends right now. I know Stevie is devastated. She absolutely adored Tom. :(

I just read this from TMZ, too:

"1:35 PM PT -- Sources tell us at 10:30 Monday morning a chaplain was called to Tom's hospital room. We're told the family has a do not resuscitate order on Tom. The singer is not expected to live throughout the day, but he's still clinging to life. A report that the LAPD confirmed the singer's death is inaccurate -- the L.A. County Sheriff's Dept. handled the emergency."

Either way, this is very sad.

TheWildHeart67 10-02-2017 04:24 PM

Tom Petty and the Heart breakers are my second fave band of all time, after Fleetwood Mac.
I've seen them many times. This is making me cry.

Jondalar 10-02-2017 04:32 PM

I've gotten drunk so many times, by myself listening to to Tom Petty, I feel like I lost a good drinking buddy. Sad!!!!

SpyNote 10-02-2017 04:34 PM

This is obviously going to hit Stevie very hard. I don’t know how she has coped with all this loss throughout her life. Prayers.

She deals with loss the way WE ALL DO. She's a human being.
My parents died horrible deaths to cancer. A friend of mine was murdered. Another friend OD'd..EVERYBODY suffers and copes with loss.
Stevie hasn't gone through any worse loss than ANY other human being

Wow. That was pretty harsh response. I think you took the OPs comment out of context.

People deal with death very differently. It depends on the mental state and emotional maturity of the one who loses a loved one. And your statement is of "....hasn't gone through any worse loss than ANY other human being" is completely inaccurate; some human beings have to endure much more loss than others....

Be nice. Lets keep this conversation about the loss of Tom Petty and how the fans and other musicians like Stevie will handle the news and please keep your personal loss out of this. Its not about you.

Tom Petty, the American rocker who fronted one of the country’s longest-running, most successful bands, is fighting for his life, according to reports.

TMZ first reported the news Monday that he was found unconscious in full cardiac arrest at his Malibu home Sunday. CBS News later reported his death, which could not be independently confirmed. A representative for Petty did not immediately return The Washington Post’s inquiry.

A CBS Twitter account attributed the report of Petty’s death to the Los Angeles Police Department; the tweet has since been deleted.

“The LAPD has no information about the passing of singer Tom Petty. Initial information was inadvertantly [sic] provided to some media sources,” the police department posted on Twitter. “However, the LAPD has no investigative role in this matter. We apologize for any inconvenience in this reporting.”

TMZ followed up with a post that Petty was “still clinging to life. A report that the LAPD confirmed the singer’s death is inaccurate.”

Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers had just concluded their 40th anniversary tour, which Petty had said would be the band’s last big, country-spanning tour. The group played shows at Los Angeles’ Hollywood Bowl on Sept. 21, 22 and 25, and earlier on Monday, Petty’s official website posted a recap of the group’s final shows.

“It’s 1:22 a.m., and the last lighting, video and sound cases are getting loaded up and pushed off the stage at the Hollywood Bowl, where Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers played three incredible sold-out, hometown shows to close out the band’s 40th Anniversary tour,” reads the blog post. “Fifty-three shows. Twenty-four states. Twelve lighting crew. Eleven truck drivers. Nine in Production. Seven sound guys. Six backline crew. Six months. Five opening acts. Three countries. Three riggers. One legendary band and over one million legendary fans. Thank you to all!”

In August, a series of shows was postponed as Petty recovered from laryngitis.

On Monday, a few hours before TMZ ran with the news, this throwback photo had been posted to Petty’s official Twitter account.

Originally from Florida, Petty rose to fame as the frontman of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, whose 1976 self-titled debut featured his unique nasal voice and guitar work. His career, both with the band and as a solo act, spanned decades and included hits such as “Rockin’ Around (With You),” “Breakdown,” “Free Fallin’” and “Last Dance with Mary Jane.”

I don't think that is harsh at all. This is about Tom, not Stevie. Geesh!
