This should be a great read but I already found something inaccurate :eek:
It says Stevie slept on Prince's kitchen floor during a Mac tour? Was it not her Wild Heart or RAL tour? Stevie was off cocaine for the 87 tour and I don't think she knew Prince in 1982 for the Mirage tour.
So isn't that inaccurate? Or am I wrong?

We've already talked about this in another thread on the Stevie's section a while ago. Basically Stevie remembers wrong because she worked with Prince before/on 1985, that is the date in which she delivered to her studios the tapes of the song that she was working on with Prince, "All Over You". So either it wasn't a Fleetwood Mac tour or she met Prince before Wild Heart and it was the Mirage Tour.
On the Crystal Visions commentary of Edge of 17 she even says that someone told her Prince was backstage at that show.

Well Prince wrote the music for Stand Back, so wouldn't they have had to spend time together in 82/83?

Stand Back was not written until January of 1983 and Prince basically just played keyboards on it. She took part of the melody from "Little Red Corvette"

People don't give 50% of the royalties to "just the keyboard player". Nice try, though.

Nicks has often told the story of how she wrote the song. She wrote it on the day of her marriage to Kim Anderson on January 29, 1983. The newlyweds were driving up to San Ysidro Ranch in Santa Barbara when Prince's song "Little Red Corvette" came on the radio. Nicks started humming along to the melody, especially inspired by the lush synthesizers of the song, and "Stand Back" was born. They stopped and got a tape recorder and she recorded the demo in the honeymoon suite that night. Later, when Nicks went into the studio to record the song, she called Prince and told him the story of how she wrote the song to his melody. He came to the studio that night and played synthesizers on it, although his contribution is uncredited on the album. He and Nicks did agree however to split the publishing royalties on the song 50-50. Then, she says, "he just got up and left as if the whole thing happened in a dream."

That right there sets off warning signs for me.

1. Stevie's known exaggerations.

2. No photo or video of them together.

3. My ears don't tell me Prince played on the song.*

I've read on the internet that Prince shares songwriting
credit with Stevie (ASCAP supposedly). That's about it.

As far as I know, Barry might have played the synth on
Stand Back.

There are two keyboard parts on Stand Back that Prince could have played, and no one would be able to tell whether it's Prince or not. He was a pretty good keyboardist, but these two parts are so simple and mechanical that they may have even been something he programmed on an Oberheim or a Prophet. The first part is an octave tremolo during the chorus--back and forth on the B--and the second part is the synth bass 16th notes undergirding the whole song. Both parts are very Prince-y, very dance-funk, and very simple. I totally believe Prince added them both, for atmosphere. They're the sort of short synth-dance motifs that he added to his own music all the time, like I Would Die 4 U and You Belong 2 Me and 17 Days.

What Stand Back and Corvette have in common, aside from the synth funk atmosphere that Prince helped pioneer, is modulation. That's why you can sing one while the music to the other one is playing. Stevie's credit gift of 50% or whatever was more of a nice Stevie thing to do, and not really legally necessary. (There's a lot more ripoff going on in Illume than in anything in Stand Back.)

Prince played on the song. There's no debate there. Stevie and others who were in the studio attest to it. Yes, she has since worn the collaboration like a badge, and yes, she is prone to exaggeration, but that's beside the point. This was 1983 and she was at the top of her solo game and a huge figure in the public eye. There would have been no reason why this would not be believable.

The only surprising thing is her insistence on 50/50 publishing rights. Any number of her Mac songs have required more input from Lindsey and the rest of the band. It's like giving John McVie partial credit for his game-changing bass line in "Rhiannon." Because of him, a straight-ahead galloping rock tune became a slithering, seductive thing. Where's his royalty ;)

On another note, the title of this thread is "New Book." I'm still waiting for the thread that will read: "New Album."
