Seeking Bob Welch - Green Manalishi
Does anyone have a good quality version of Bob Welch singing Green Manalishi? I have a version on my computer but it isn't the best sound quality and as I like Bob singing it I'd really like a better version.
Thanks in advance... ;) |
Speaking of which...
...does anyone know when (and why) the band decided to bring Green's songs back into the set-list?
They did not play any in concert (that I know of), after Green first left, building their shows around Kirwan, Spencer and Christine until Welch joined the band - Did they feel they needed the Green songs to fill out the set after Spencer's departure until Welch had enough new material to fill the gap? What might have been going through Kirwan's mind when the idea was first broached? Here they were trying to move forward, and now they were looking backward again... |

During those first tours with Welch (71/72), Kirwan took the lead vocal on "Black Magic Woman", Welch took "Oh Well"...little by little, more Green tunes got added to the set and Welch took over lead vocals on Peter's tunes. In '74, the band was in crisis due to the challenge of ownership of the name "Fleetwood Mac" (due to the whole "bogus band" fiasco), so besides having new material, they dug deep into the catalogue to perform those songs as "proof" that they were "THE REAL" Fleetwood Mac. |
He must have cringed

True. Whether during the period immediately after Peter left we wanted to or felt incapable of performing his songs wasn't an issue or even discussed, all we knew was that we wanted to move forward, and Danny and I had never based recording or performing our material according to public taste when we had little to lose playing to sparse crowds. That's why Peter, Danny and I played blues in the first place at a time when it was far from standard popular fare. It just so happened that it became popular through proponents like John Mayall, God bless him! The only prob for me was that, as usual in those days, I was up a creek without a paddle for new ideas. |
As always, thank you, Jeremy, for setting us straight.

I saw a later version of FM at Wembley Arena, in which there was a special part of the show where Billy Burnette and Rick Vito did a selection of Peter's classics, well done , but it didn't have the magic. The guitarist friend I was with walked out of the concert in disgust at this point ,but I stayed till the end. |

Never liked Bob's versions of Green classics. I like a lot of Bob's songs, but he didn't have the stage personality that Green, Kirwan, Spencer and even Buckingham had. It's too sedate. |
