Cover of Tusk

Can anyone tell me what the cover of Tusk, with the dog, is supposed to mean?

bjk3047 05-28-2002 02:59 PM

Hey, you know I never thought of this before now. What with all of Lindsey's involvement, this may have been the same dog that "appeared" on Holiday Road a bit afterwards. He always said the dog was an inside joke and left it at that.

I had read several times that the word 'tusk' was a code word of Mick's for, well, you know...
maybe there is some correlation..

The dog was John's and that's supposed to be John's foot, as I recall...not that this helps to explain the meaning...

Carole Ann 05-28-2002 04:11 PM

Yep

It's Richard's dog and John's foot and means nothing at all, other than that everyone thought it'd be a funny cover shot.

We're going through the same thing - trying to find a cover shot for a friend's cd, came across a shot they'd taken of (of all things) a dead mouse next to a bicycle on a cobblestone street, and...voi'la..."there's your cover!"

More often than not, that's the way covers are generally chosen...with artists who are either not too full of themselves or who have a decent sense of humor, anyway.

Stevie's reaction

I read an interview somewhere were Stevie sounded quite upset at the cover, like she didn't think rabid dogs were funny or something to that effect. She sounded so vehement about it I had to laugh.

Carole Ann 05-28-2002 06:17 PM

Oh, geez...

That's what I meant about having a sense of humor.

Take the "leg" away and it looks like a dog playing with a pull-toy. Surely we're not going to hear about "Cruelty to Dog Toys" from her any time soon!

I think the barking on Holiday Road was an homage to the dog incident in the movie - not sure there's a connection to the Tusk cover, but anything's possible. ;)

Poor Dinky... I was watching NLV last night on Dinner and a Movie, I missed the dog part, which even tho it's so sad, it's HILARIOUS about the cop and crying and stuff.:laugh: I HATE when at the end tho, you CANNOT HEAR LINDSEY SINGING DATUSA because the credits shrink down so they can talk about ANOTHER movie or TV show!! DOH!!! I will have to get it on DVD so I can crank up the credits and jam to Lindsey!!:thumbsup:

I also think that dog in the background on the song has something to do with the dog in the movie and, maybe the theme of his video, in which he plays a working class "dog" with a bad suit in an office.

Here's the quote. I know Stevie didn't mean for it to be funny, but I find it hilarious. To me, I find Stevie funny when she's serious. Something about the way she words things.

Hit Parader-April 1981
(about the Tusk album cover)"I never did like the cover, and everybody knows that. I got attacked by a German Sheperd about a year ago and the picture reminds me of that dog. He really isn't a mean dog, but I don't like pictures of dogs that look like they're going to rip your face off. I simply had to learn to accept it. But I'll just never wear a tee shirt with that dog on the front of it."

I dunno... with "The Klonopin Years" being an exception, Stevie's often been credited for having a terrific sense of humor, by journalists and by her peers (Ann Wilson & Bob Welch, for example)... so I don't think she was showing a lack of humor here. And if I remember correctly, Christine wasn't too blown away by the cover either.

I have to agree with them... a goofy polaroid of a snarling dog and someone's outstretched leg, makes for a less than thrilling album cover.
But hey... it sure is quirky! :D

While we're quoting....:)
Not that it helps a whole lot, but this might lead away from the assumption that the dog was reference to the movie dog. (from Pontiac, MI 1992 Radio Show):
LB: [performs Holiday Road]
DJ: It was great to hear you do the dog, by the way
LB: Well you know...
DJ: Who's dog was that?
LB: It was a little inside joke actually...
DJ: Yeah?
LB: People going "What the..?"
[changing topics]
They didn't say a lot about it, but I'd tend to believe the dog was independant from the movie from that...
