Track Talk: Woman Don't

Track Talk: Woman Don’t

You've been staying out late, coming home all hours
And I've got to know, babe, why you treat me this way
What you trying to tell me?
That our love is over?
Well, I've got to ask you, why you damn at me?

Woman don't
Woman don’t
Woman don’tcha, don’tcha know
Now, woman don't
Woman don’t
Woman don’tcha, woman don’tcha go

I call you on the phone, babe, but I get no answer
I've got to know now, who's on the other line
Yes, I heard it from the grapevine
You have found another
But I've got to ask you, baby, one more time

Woman don't
Woman don’t
Woman don’tcha, don’tcha know
Now, woman don't
Woman don’t
Woman don’tcha, woman don’tcha go

Once we made sweet music, I and you used to sing, baby
But the music is missing, you don't sing no more
Now I see you coming
But I can see two shadows
I'm standing on the sidewalk and you're not alone

Woman don't
Woman don’t
Woman don’tcha, don’tcha know
Said, woman don't
Woman don’t
Woman don’tcha, woman don’tcha go

This a favourite of mine, an overlooked B-side gem from the PVK years. I like the funky, jazzy feeling. It opens with a single guitar tone by Peter, then it’s a great groove with catchy rhythm guitar chords. Peter’s does a great job singing it, and I love the vibrato at the end of the line “I've got to know now, who's on the other line”. :blob2:

Then there’s the lazy guitar with that clean sound so familiar for that era. I like the “tapping” solo that starts around 02:00 followed by those “releasing” long tones (hard to speak about music…). I think most other guitarists would have felt it too unpolished, and would have done more fancy playing. But I guess Peter did what felt right, and it fits the song perfectly. Then he’s getting more loose in the second solo after the last chorus.

I also think the band does a good job on this, and I like walking bass line on the chorus.

It’s a great song to play when driving your car at night. Especially when it’s raining! :D
Other thoughts or comments? Let’s discuss!

odd song

The verse on this song was always so odd to me There is a beat skip on this that drives me batty
it does not occur on the break or the chorus. It would be a major challenge for any drummer let alone the rest of the band.
Greeny's playing in the second break is very entertaining, and his singing is as usual sparse and understated but where it should be.

Hahaha, yeah the drum trickery..
Interesting!!
Actually, I don't think he skips a beat. I think he just hits it a little prior to "the beat". So all in all it is a regular 4:4 beat song.

I remember it sounded strange at first, but nowadays I like it and think it adds a little extra to something that could have been monotonic.

drum trickery

I just did not know what to call it in music terms

I think the little dreamer sessions were really interesting as a whole.

one of my favorites from that period is Big Boy Now. strong singing, good song

Yes I find it difficult to talk about music too.
Why do you find the session interesting? Is it the songs? Different musical styles? Do you know any stories from that session? (Apart from what is written in Celmins' book.)

Nice idea, Daniel :).

I like this tune....nice guitar and vocal. Not too fond of the production style on Little Dreamer overall, it sounds like UK studio pros trying to play funk., and Dave Mattacks (Fairport Convention) was not the right drummer imo....Greeny puts in fine performances on most of the songs though.

Hahaha, yeah I know what you mean. Also, those back singers didn't do much good. "Loser Two Times" comes to my mind: "Ooahh - ooh - ooh - ooahh!"
The backup singers used on Splinter Group's recordings did a much better job.

Yeah...bet the girls had at least 5 minutes to work out their parts :). Very nice Green solo on that one though.
I think "In The Skies" and "White Sky" had the best bands and production of the PVK era...but sure there was a lot of interesting material recorded for "Little Dreamer"; a very wide range of styles, from blues to pop to reggae to instrumentals.
