Fleetwood Mac's Songbird: Christine McVie
Just finished watching this programme. It was okay. It was lovely to have a documentary focusing on Christine, its just a shame it didn't focus on her a bit more. Much of this programme was just a retreading of the history of Fleetwood Mac. Every now and then the makers of the programme remembered it was supposed to be about Christine and brought her back in and played more of her music.
Once again its a shame they didn't focus more on the Bob Welch years. They talked a bit about Bob and mentioned how Chris harmonized with him so well. Sadly none of her music from this period was played. Stevie made regular contributions; Humorously she mimicked Chris' English accent a couple of times and sounded (and looked) like the Queen. Irritatingly Neil Finn and Mike Campbell made significant contributions- 'dudes, you've known her for , like, 2 years!!!!' Neil did comment on her songwriting and mentioned they'd only recently been working on a song together. Perhaps some new music will come out of this incarnation of the band after all. The images from the Buckingham McVie period were a beautiful reminder of that time. She broke my heart a bit though by saying how great Lindsey was but then callously saying it had to be done and how great it was on stage with the current band. So sad they had to make a programme about Christine McVie with no contribution from Lindsey. Overall, I'd say there was pretty much nothing new in this documentary. I was hoping for more detail. I'd like to have heard about her relationship with Martin Birch. I'd have liked to have heard from Curry Grant himself. I'd liked to have heard more about exactly what she did in her time away from the band (I don't think they even mentioned In The Meantime). I did like her description of herself as 'The Queen of the Hook'. Perhaps the biggest take-away from this was full confirmation from the horses mouth (as it were) that Over My Head was definitely 100% written about Lindsey. |
I can see it now. All the SN cult members will take the bit about Over My Head as proof that he was abusive and temperamental back then. And it justifies his firing.

Regarding Over My Head, did Chris have a crush on Lindsey?

I don’t like to think that they have slept together, but I’ve always loved their familiarity and particularly when it gets physical. I like when they touch, touch hair, kiss or stare at each other. Always have. My Dance bootlegs are all boxed up now, but on the label outside of the case I would always write down how intimate Lindsey and Chris got for the final bow, in case wanted to watch that bit over!
But I lived SnL very, very much as well. |
The doc was good. Could have been great had there been more focus on Christine’s vocal and instrumental abilities. Not one mention of IN THE MEANTIME, which is absurd. The entire doc centered on her as an entity of the band, as someone whose sense of self is connected inextricably to the band. Fair enough, but where was the song writing award mention (Ivor Morello?)? That I believe was as much responsible for her reemergence as her overcoming the fear of flying.
Loved the earlier coverage, and then the brief but cool footage of the band recording the HEROES soundboard stuff. Love, too, the footage of the Hold Me video and later the footage of her singing with Mick’s blues band in Maui. Tired of Stevie’s bs stories about them forming a pact and tired of her condescending imitation of Christine’s voice. Dennis and Curry and Eddie—but no Martin Birch! Loved the snippet of Christine playing a Sony Thompson-blues passage on the piano. Some of the best insights regarding Christine’s voice come, ironically, from Neil Fynn. |

Thanks to Mike Campbell, we know that Stevie's going out on the road for another one of her gargantuan tours, and we know that Fleetwood Mac probably has nothing scheduled for a long time (because the lead singer and the lead guitarist are taking a band hiatus). So, to me, the only question is what Chris plans to do with her time. Will she reach out to Lindsey? Will Lindsey be available? She came back for good in October 2014—and got five years out of it (two world tours and one album).

I wonder if a Lindsey/Christine album is even a possibility or if that bridge has been burned. If it happened, she wouldn't likely be able to use John and Mick. |

I enjoy stories about Tee. In all seriousness though it makes me sad. It reinforces the notion that they were destined. The fact that things ended so badly does not change what went before, but it changes it for me somehow. It makes it hard for me to take any pleasure from the past.

I enjoyed this special because it was a tribute to Christine McVie. I loved the pre 1975 stuff cause a lot of info was new to me. After 1975 it kinda felt more like a Stevie Nicks tribute film I was watching. I was hoping all the focus would be on Chris.
Did anyone notice how they used the camera footage from an audience member when showing the return of Chris with Fleetwood Mac at the Ireland show? That was one of my favorite clips even before this special aired. Members of the entourage must have made their own films. I remember seeing Marty Holm standing on LB's side of the stage filming. But alas it was one of us who had the better clip!! The Lindsey bashing was totally un-necessary for this film. I agree with other posters how this entire thing was designed to fit the current narrative. |
Can I see the documentary anywehere? I cant watch it on official BBC website, because Im not in the UK...

Where can I view this program?
Does the show have much about Christine's early years, her time with Chicken Shack and her "Legendary Christine Perfect album"? As for Chris reuniting with Lindsey for another album, wouldn't Lindsey's health status make this impossible? |

i do think he's working on fixing his voice, and would probably like to get out his solo stuff first, if he gets at least some of his voice back. |
It’s more than a shame — it’s actually kind of embarrassing — that a big career retrospective on TV for Christine didn’t feature some big names. Where are all the big stars who have loved her music all these decades? Where’s McCartney? Phil Collins? Stevie Winwood? Clapton? Elton? They should be in a TV special like this one, praising Chris for her one-of-the-boys musicianship, pioneering spirit, and songwriting hooks. Why do all the superstars only come out for Stevie Nicks every f*cking time?

But you’re right. And why don’t other women call Christine a pioneer? I can see why young women romanticize about Stevie and her showmanship. In Stevie’s lyric speak to me as well. Why aren’t Linda Ronstadt or Dolly Parton or the Dixie Chicks talking about Christine for her musicianship? That dame. People can’t get past Little Lies. |

And such a voice she had. It makes you feel the emotion even if the words don’t. I am thinking of songs like Why or Over My Head. There’s an ache there.
Even Lindsey said that he and Stevie are nasal, while Christine has these honey tones. I don’t know why other celebrities don’t talk about her. |

She says her brother has psychic abilities too. I don't know if Christine does, if she has ever said that she can see into the future, but they say she has healing abilities. If her mother got rid of a neighbor's cancer by letting the neighbor wear her gloves, that's all the more reason why Christine should have at least paid a brief visit to Lindsey after his surgery. Laid hands on him or his chest or larynx. Let him slip his hand inside her glove. |

I've lost all my respect for my life long heroine. She's only half a notch above that IDIOT Mick, and the stupid, selfish old goat. And John is no better. |
(Replying to Kyle)
If you listen to the interview posted "Christine's Island Discs" she does talk at length about her mother's psychic abilities and how she just wanted to have a normal mother. Although her mother kept much of this part of her life private but there would be all kinds of strangers showing up at the house, etc. As far as details about the "orange grove" she talked about this during a 1988 Rockline interview with the band to promote the "Greatest Hits" album. It seems Stevie likes to mention it more than Christine. It was brought up as a question to ask if the album cover was an orange blossom in related to the "orange grove." Christine said the album cover was not related to her mother but I believe the cover is an orange blossom? (I forget). |

Christine’s mother held seances too. She was basically a witch. It would have been interesting if she had lived longer and known the Rumours band.
