definitely go see the redwalls. i just saw them friday night -- they're awesome. they're on student-run drexel university label MadDragon Records (that's my friend ashley holding up the sign -- she was responsible for putting together their show on friday...i'm pretty proud of her).

apart from those already mentioned, may i suggest...

Nicole Atkins
Ben's Brother (dentyne ice uses their song "stuttering")
Rocco Deluca and the Burden (i cannot rave enough about them)
Sonya Kitchell
My Morning Jacket
Kate Voegele

also, i've been meaning to tell you to check out local philadelphia band jealousy curve (currently touring the south before finally coming home on friday!!). apart from being a great bunch of guys, they're out of this world performers. they did an acoustic show not too long ago and covered purple rain. i died a little. check them out...you'll dig

Livia 02-10-2008 10:07 PM

I was waiting for you to chime in on this thread.

I was listening to Nicole Atkins earlier today - I dig her. She's on the list.

The Redwalls got upgraded to bolded font...I really like them!

I saw MMJ at ACL last year. They did put on a great show - with a Hawaiian Tropic theme. The lead singer wore a blonde wig and grass skirt. I like them, but don't think I need to see them again during sxsw.

I've heard of Kate and Rocco, but am not familiar w/ their music. I'll check them out and the others you mentioned too.

BTW, I'm a HUGE Grace Potter fan now - thanks!

yeah, if there are other bands you haven't had a chance to see yet, i don't blame you for not wanting to go see my morning jacket again -- i'd be the same way. there's too many awesome bands/performers to see the same folks again.

every year you make me incredibly jealous. i swear, one year i will make it down there  i'm also really really wanting to go to bonnaroo...but i'm not sure that will pan out either.

i can honestly say that there is not one song on rocco's album that i do not like. i first heard about them back in december of '06. vh1 ran a documentary called i trust you to kill me and it was all about the band and keifer sutherland (he discovered them and in fact, the band is on the record label he's part owner of) touring europe. it was incredibly interesting and really well put together. i bought the album the next day and have been listening to it every since  they've been touring the country with different vh1 you oughta know artists. you'll have to let me know what you think of them and jealousy curve (black widow is currently in heavy rotation).

Duh - Kate Voegele - she's already one of my myspace friends.

From Rocco's myspace: DeLuca and the Burden's music is a passionate, muscular mix of swampy blues and stomping rock. They're not derivative, but their sound has elements of Dave Matthews Band, Tim Buckley and U2, with hints of Thom Yorke and Lindsey Buckingham in DeLuca's keening voice.
- LA Times

I love the dobro. "Swing Low" rocks! He's on the list!

I need to move to Austin.

Just saw this online...I guess 6-8 weeks would make her miss SXSW.

Dolly Parton’s breasts may be two of the wonders of the entertainment world, but the country music icon says they are a pain in her back.

Parton, 62, said on Monday she would postpone her upcoming North American tour after doctors told her to take it easy for six to eight weeks to rest her sore back.

“Hey, you try wagging these puppies around a while and see if you don’t have back problems,” the folksy singer-songwriter said in a statement.

Livia 02-11-2008 10:12 PM

Yeah, I saw that earlier today. I'm bummed, she needs a breast reduction.

 there are so many awesome artists out there, it's hard to keep track of them

i thought you'd dig rocco deluca  swing low is definitely one of the standouts on the album. unfortunately, the single they released colorful (i don't enjoy it nearly as much as the rest of the songs) doesn't seem to get much airplay. also awesome, the song gift. you'll have to let me know how the band is -- i've missed them the past two times they've been here.

Austin is one AWESOME city! I'm in Houston, and many moons ago my Sis went to UT, and we came many times to hang out! Beautiful place to say the least!

Livia 02-12-2008 11:39 AM

Cool, maybe she'll still make it here:

PARTON'S TOUR, SXSW TRIP ON HOLD
Citing a back problem, Dolly Partonhas postponed her U.S. tour, which was to kick off Feb. 28 in Minnesota and include a stop at South by Southwest. The singer's publicist said doctors advised Parton to take six to eight weeks off to recover from the unspecified ailment.
"I know I have been breaking my neck and bending over backwards trying to get my new 'Backwoods Barbie' CD and world tour together," the 62-year-old Parton said in a statement, "but I didn't mean to hurt myself doing it."
The tour will be rescheduled for late April through May.
SXSW hasn't been notified yet about whether Parton will appear in some capacity, a representative said Monday

I would be pulled into a club by:

The Heavy (one of the best records I've heard lately-steamy livestuff I presume)
Nada Surf (I bet you like them, Livia)
Yeasayer.

BTW: No Okkervil River? They were GREAT last week in nijmegen!

No Drive-By Truckers? They got one hell of a countryrock epos out that doesn't leave my player for a while-only to make place for Canadians Black Mountain and their new album. A cracker of an album that rocks my boat bigtime and would be perfect for SXSW. Not on the list yet?

Every year about this time I'm green of jealousy. Austin is so cool. Been there once. STILL wanting to go back.

All three bands are on my MUST SEE list. I adore THE HEAVY and YEASAYER -- both bands have a big buzz behind them at the moment. I have seen NADA SURF a couple of times and they are never a let down. Their new material sounds awesome.

Austin truly is one of the coolest cities in the US.

Come to SXSW -- it's the best party of the year! :wavey:

I haven't heard of very many of these bands. Color me flummoxed.
