Progress... like a glass of cold water in a desert! :)

I was looking through some old magazines, called Future Life which was something like Omni only with some big media sci-fi stuff on top. There were wise some pro-LGB letters and many that went to great pains to make sure the reader knew the author wasn't 'one of those' at all never ever etc., but also a few that today would qualify as hate speech, really shocking, but in 1980-81 I barely noticed them (along with ads for 'adult' fantasy book series Gor, and pin-ups of the Hulk, Wonder Woman or Darth Vader). I also remember how often the terms 'fag' and 'les' were thrown about in junior high school at this same time in my life. I hope things really are better now, that our species has indeed made some progress and accepted some basic facts of diversity. We all win when we let the truth in, including someone else's truth. That's often what the best science-fiction and science itself has been about showing.

Unfortunately our Australian Prime Minister still believes that marriage is between a man and a woman. Poor old Australia we are going to be so far behind the rest of the world...

I don't think that here in Italy we'll ever see same sex marriage legitimized

Thinking "We're doing bad but we're still doing better than a lot of others" doesn't make things right nor better. Things change when we acknowledge that things are wrong and try to fix it.

I don't know if it's the right place to post it but photographer Braden Summers did an exhibition called "Love is equal for everyone" which displayed his photos of homosexual couples taken all over the world " caught in their emotional normality, as they exchange a kiss or a caress".

Finland also has NOWHERE near the diversity America has. It is stupid comparing countries to one another when they are so fundamentally different.

SisterNightroad 07-09-2015 11:49 AM

It would be useless to compare two identical nations.
Just because two cultures/countries are different doesn't mean they don't have anything to share or they can't look to one another for inspiration.
Nationalism (meant as excessive patriotism) and racism stem from this kinds of close point of view.
