Live '80 Question.
 

OK, If you lokk at the CD jacket or the LP sleeve you will see it has all the tour dates on it! I was looking at this last night and I was wondering are the numbers beside the venue How many seats that venue has, or is that how many people went?
Heres an exaple
December 1979
1 Cedar Falls, IA. - UNI-Dome - 25,000 SOLD OUT
4 Los Angeles, CA - The Forum - 17,000
5 Los Angeles, CA - The Forum - 17,000
6 Los Angeles, CA - The Forum - 17,000
9 San Diego, CA - Sports Arena - 13,000
10 Los Angeles, CA - The Forum - 17,000
11 Los Angeles, CA - The Forum - 17,000
14 San Fransisco, CA - Cow Palace - 14,000
15 San Fransisco, CA - Cow Palace - 14,000

I know the Iowa show was sold out but, what about all those fourm shows? That would mean that the played infront of 85,000 people in the Los Angeles area alone! WOW, if those were all sell outs!

I think you're right. I'm pretty sure Fleetwood Mac was selling out almost every venue back in 79 and 80.

But that was also back in the days before they started charging $150 for a ticket! It's all about supply and demand. Adjusting for inflation, I think the Mac could fill that many seats if they would keep the ticket prices under $50.

Dammit. I went searching for my Mirage and Tusk ticket stubs, but they weren't where I thought they were. Does anyone remember how much these shows were? I'm guessing like $14-16.
Tickets have WAY surpassed inflation.
My first concert, in 6th grade(with my hippy aunt!) was Peter Frampton. The ticket was $6.00 for general admission(and this was at his career peak!), about the cost of 9 gallons of gas(yes, I just researched it). Sooo, a $150 FM now will cost you 70-85 gallons of gas.
Now THAT's inflation. :rolleyes:

It was big news back in those days how the Mac wasn't playing to sold-out shows during the Tusk tour.

I would bet thats about right, The Eagles were $15 in 79, so FM would probably be about the same. Oh price quote is from a concert poster.

it was of how many people attended, they ran a huge story here in nebraska about the cedar falls show & said the last time fm was there, during the tusk tour they sold out @ 25,000 & more people attended the fm show then, than they did the rolling stones, which i loved 2 know this tidbit, i am NOT a stones fan~ that fm show back then is still the record fo people attending a show~

I believe tickets for the Tusk tour were 8 buck. either that or this was the Rumours tour. one of them was 8 bucks.

Thanks for the info! Concert prices were a bit up there twoards the end! At the Hollywood Bowl the were $17.50

I always assumed that the figures on the album sleeve indicated the venue seating capacity, not the number of tickets sold.

Numerous cities along that tour sold out, but not every last one. Incidentally, the band was awarded a little honor by Billboard at the end of tour for being the year's biggest concert draw for arenas.

We're in the ballpark:

The August 16 Dallas show was $12.50 for an upper balcony.
May 1 Seattle show general admin was $12.50.
May 10 Minneapolis show was $12.50.
August 18 Houston show was $13.50.
A box at the Bowl on August 31 was $17.50.
November 16 at the Garden was $14.50 for an orchestra seat.
Floor seats at the Forum in December were between $12 & $13.

Sigh.

I realize that those are 1980 prices....but really, even if you adjust for inflation, the prices today shouldn't be more than $50--which in itself would be more than a 200% increase. Instead, we have tickets in the $130 to $150 range, which is, if I'm doing the math correctly, more than a 700% increase from the highest price on that list. From what I understand, we can thank Clear Channel's stranglehold on the industry for the current state of affairs. There's an interesting piece about them posted to the Elton John thread in the Chit Chat forum. Don't we have antitrust laws for this sort of thing???? :mad:

Oh, I think the bandS are just as greedy as Clear Channel. Why else would anyone in their 50's and 60's want to tour? If they wanted $40 tix, they could have them.

That is true. The band is supposedly making 35+ G's a night per member. Thats INSANE. Thats more than some make in a year!! The band could cut the ticket prices in half and pull home 12-16 G's each per night. They'd still walk away with nearly a million dollars each, after a full tour, doing what they love to do.

:nod: Just look at Tom Petty. He refuses to charge more than $50-$60 a ticket and still says he walks away from the tour with millions.
