Horse Trainer Jonathan Munz Sells Meurice, Buys McManus Mansion For $13.5 Million

Horse trainer and breeder Jonathan Munz has used profits from the sale of a race horse to fund a $13.5 million property play in Toorak.

Mr Munz, who is part of the Victorian Thoroughbred Racehorse Owners Association, was this week revealed as the mystery buyer of the “McManus mansion” in Orrong Road – near Steve Vizard’s former home.

On an acre of Toorak land, the Munz estate includes a swimming pool and tennis court built around a large established garden. The Georgian home itself includes 6-bedrooms, a study and large formal and informal living and dining areas.

Mr Munz, who could not be contacted, famously sold a half share of the champion Meurice race horse to Sydney-based trainer Gai Waterhouse in 2006 for an undisclosed sum.

Ms Waterhouse went on to sell her half share in August to the powerful Darley conglomerate of racehorse owners, for a price reported to be $12 million. However the colt never raced for them, after it broke its shoulder and was put down in January.

The vendor of the Orrong Road home, LA-based music promoter Andrew McManus paid $6.05 million for it in May 2004. He would make the home available to touring international musicians including Deep Purple, Fleetwood Mac and Kiss.

He was the Promoter for her concerts in Australia and I believe a partner in race horse ownership.
