M.Fleetwood 8 Favourite FM Songs

Posting this article here and in the Early Years forum.

"Walk A Thin Line" is one of my favorites as well. "Tusk" not remotely so.

Its a good list. The drumming on Walk A Thin Line is so cool.
Picking favorite FM songs is really tough. There are so many eras and different singers. However he has 2 on his list that probably would be on mine too. Oh Daddy and Go Your Own Way

This is a love letter to Lindsey - three of the eight songs are his. Three also by Peter Green, though he’s not around to see it.

I'm surprised FM didn't play more of these songs on their 2018 Tour.
They went for the Peter Green and Lindsey rock radio songs.

I think Neil Finn would've sounded good on Walk a Thin Line and Tusk.

No one could handle the vocals on Tusk like Lindsey. That would be like another singer besides Stevie singing Silver Springs. Lindsey owns Tusk. It was crazy enough they did Second Hand News but songs from Tusk are another animal that no one dare perform without Lindsey.

I agree. Just like there are some songs a Christine replacement could not pull off, such as Brown Eyes or Songbird. Same thing with a Stevie replacement not being able to pull off Rhiannon or Gold Dust Woman. Some FM songs are so identified with the singer that they probably shouldn’t be performed by anyone else, whereas songs like Dreams, Go Your Own Way, and Don’t Stop are identified more closely with the band as a whole.

I remember a quote from Stevie saying one of the reasons she didn’t care for the Tusk tour was because they performed a lot of songs she didn’t care for, so really I’m not surprised FM didn’t perform songs from Tusk on their last tour, other than Storms, which sadly got switched with Gypsy early on.

Good list, even though I agree just with 50% as favorites

I disagree. I think Neil has the voice for Tusk because there's shouting in the song. And that's what Neil did at the 4 shows I saw on Lindsey's songs, lotta shouting. Mike would've sounded better singing lead on Go Your Own Way and Second Hand News.

Neil sounded okay on Monday Morning verses but the chorus:eek: My ears!

According to his 1993 interview with Paul Zollo in the book Songwriters On Songwriting, Lindsey plays the drums on that song:

"That was me on drums. Mick was appalled. He was appalled that these drums were going out and people would think that it's him (sic), because it offended the finer points of his sensibilities. And I understand that. I was really going for slop. And trying to cut through the slickness in some ways....

"They're left and right drums, and the kick and snare on either side, and these militasry press fills, which is really what the song is built on. Yeah, that worked out well...."

I believe quite a few of Lindsey’s songs on Tusk were recorded without the rest of the band; hence some of the bad feelings the band members have towards the album.

I agree. In the Tusk documentary I recall seeing him play percussion on "Save Me A Place." That's when he seemed to get (or follow through on) the urge to do as much as possible himself. I think that's what he partly means when he says "left side of the palette."

I never fully bought the notion that Fleetwood Mac refused to let him do weird stuff after Tusk. "Eyes Of The World" has plenty of weird stuff. So do "Family Man" and "Caroline."

What surprised me about learning Lindsey played the drums on "Walk A Thin Line" is that, in a c. 2006 interview, I recall him saying he doesn't play "kit drums." Perhaps he did in the seventies but, by 25-30 years later, he'd lost that skill.

Mick would go along with the old goat on anything, as long as the paychecks keep rolling in. He's a pathetic POS.

Yes I remember that. I think in Mick's first book he mentions how Lindsey took percussion away from him in several areas. When he was banging on tissue boxes on the bathroom floor, the band finally realized he went too far
