Stevie Nicks: New Compilation ‘Stand Back: 1981-2017’

The life and career of Stevie Nicks is almost mythical. From her pre-Fleetwood Mac days and the cherished Buckingham Nicks album recorded before she and Lindsey joined the band, which of course helped make Fleetwood Mac the rock and roll institution it remains to this day, she’s an integral part of music history.

As such, she owns the rare designation of being inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame two times — with her second, this time as a solo artist, coming up this spring. With plenty of reason to celebrate, Rhino Records has put together a new collection of music from throughout Nicks’ career.

Stand Back: 1981 – 2017 will pull from ” … a variety of new releases that celebrate her solo career with essential recordings chosen from studio albums, live performances, and soundtrack contributions, plus several of her most-celebrated collaborations with artists including Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Don Henley, Lana Del Rey, and Lady Antebellum.”

The album, which will be available as an 18-track CD or digital edition, a 50-track, 3-CD set, and a 6-LP vinyl collection (coming out a bit later, on June 28).

More about Stand Back, from the press release:

In 1981, six years after joining Fleetwood Mac, Nicks went solo for the first time with her debut Bella Donna. A massive success, it sold more than five million copies in the U.S., topped the album charts and produced four hit singles, including her signature anthem, “Edge Of Seventeen.” More platinum albums followed – The Wild Heart (1983), Rock A Little (1985), and The Other Side Of The Mirror (1989). Music from all eight of Nicks’ studio albums are included in the set, from Top 10 hits like “Stand Back” and “Talk To Me” to “The Dealer” from her latest, 2014’s 24 Karat Gold: Songs From The Vault.

On STAND BACK, those solo tracks are joined by Nicks’ memorable collaborations with other artists, including “Stop Draggin’ My Heart Around” with Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, “Leather And Lace” with Don Henley, “You’re Not The One” with Sheryl Crow, and “Beautiful People Beautiful Problems” with Lana Del Rey.

Beyond Nicks’ work as a recording artist, STAND BACK also explores her career on stage with outstanding live recordings, including performances from her 1981 Bella Donna tour (“Dreams” and “Rhiannon”), and her 2009 live album The Soundstage Sessions (“Sara” and a cover of Dave Matthews Band’s “Crash Into Me.”) Rounding out the collection are several of her contributions to film soundtracks, like “Blue Lamp” from Heavy Metal and “If You Ever Did Believe” from Practical Magic.

Thanks kak125! I am a little confused though- the listing says the one-CD offering has 18 songs, but it lists only 17 songs.

I'll buy the 3 CD version, because I don't have a lot of the newer material Stevie's done, but I'm not sure what I think about all the live songs being Fleetwood Mac songs (even though I'm certain the songs are from her solo tour). I guess that's the best way to showcase her FM songs, but I guess I would have preferred a live CD of the Wild Heart tour, of which most of the FM songs were performed, anyway, along with her solo songs.

That's a good question about the track listing. They must have counted wrong or something.
I don't even know why the FM songs are included at all. She has enough material at this point and how many live versions of those songs do we really need? It's pretty cool that You're Not The One with Sheryl Crow is included in this set. I have the import CD which includes this song and it's one of my favorites it has such a cool groove to it. Also love that Beautiful People, Beautiful Problems, You Can't Fix This & Borrowed are included as well as all the soundtrack songs.

I just realized that TheWildHeart67 posted this right before I did so I wonder if these threads can be merged.

I keep hoping with all these anthology releases — especially those coming from the Rhino warehouse — that they'll be enterprising and care about quality and dig up old live material. But the white album, Rumours, and Tusk deluxe sets were the only ones to do that thus far. Nicks already let HUGE opportunities slide with her Bella Donna and Wild Heart sets. Each set contains about half a CD's worth of desirable cuts.

I have to say though that the remastering on those sets is perfection! It truly did enhance the sound without losing the original atmosphere and dynamics.

I agree, it was great remastering. I just wasn't as happy with the no live and a too-small selection of ancillary tracks. The Tusk deluxe set gave us TWO CDs of splendid tour tracks, and TWO CDs of orgasmic studio outtakes.

Load us up, I say!

I agree. And I think I would've prefered the rest of her back catalogue to get the deluxe remaster treatment instead of releasing a boxset.

Oh joy, looks like Chris Nicks is back in Photoshop again or Warners/Reprise had the intern do the artwork.

Love the track list but Santa Claus seems a bit out of place.
