Fleetwood Mac isn’t what it used to be; quite literally.

In April, the band fired its longtime guitarist and singer and announced it would be touring with a new lineup. So, Lindsey Buckingham was out (and not for the first time), to be replaced with Tom Petty’s ax-man Mike Campbell and Neil Finn of Crowded House.

Buckingham might take solace in knowing it took two men to replace him.

While hardcore fans might balk at the idea of a Fleetwood Mac without Buckingham, the crowd that packed into Save Mart Center Thursday night didn’t seem to mind as the band ran through two-plus hours of its biggest hits, plus a few choice surprises just for the tour.

The band used the new members to full capacity, with Finn taking over vocals duties on upbeat rockers like “Second Hand News” and “Monday Morning” and Campbell handling the lead guitar work and solos. He channeled a perfect Carlos Santana on “Black Magic Woman,” which was recorded as a Fleetwood Mac single in 1968 and sang here by Stevie Nicks.

It seemed fitting for a woman to do the song, “since it’s the year of the woman,” Nicks said, to big cheers..

Finn and Campbell were out front and visible for the bulk of the show. At one point (during a rendition of the Pete Green tune “Oh Well”) the pair was alone at the front of the stage, as if this were their band.

It’s not their band, though, and if anything the night belonged to Nicks and Christine McVie, who ended the night with a rare duet on “All Over Again.” McVie spent most of the set behind a keyboard, with Nicks singing (or shaking a tambourine) from a scarf-draped mic stand nearby. Both had shining moments; McVie early in the set with “Little Lies” and Nicks with “Landslide.”

Not everything worked. The band introduced every song, and rather awkwardly at times. This gave the set an odd pacing, especially during the first half-dozen songs.

Bottom line: If you’re over 35 and grew up listening to the radio at all, the show is good fun. You’ll know the majority of the set list and be able to sing along. Well, to the choruses, at least.

Other thoughts:

The band did their homework creating the two Fresno graphics for the beginning and end of the show. The latter featured the Fresno stamp mural.
Find a job you love as much as Mick Fleetwood loves playing drums. Seriously, the guy was beaming with joy during his drum solo.
While we’re mentioning drummers, it should be noted that the band’s second drummer/percussionist, Taku Hirano, is from Fresno and attended Roosevelt School of the Arts.
A pro tip for concertgoers: Find out when the concert starts. Be in your seats before that. It will make everyone’s life better.

So about this comment -

We were there an hour before showtime (about 7:10pm), and we literally sat in traffic 100 yards from the parking lot for over an hour. We made it to our seats during John's bass solo on "The Chain". The venue did an absolutely horrible job of managing parking/traffic, and as a result there were still a ton of empty seats 4 songs into the set.

I tried to feel bad for the employees who were getting the brunt of it from angry fans trapped in line for the metal detectors, but I was too pissed off myself to care by that point.

I tried to explain this to FM77. Another valid reason why an iconic song is wasted at the beginning of the setlist. The only reason The Chain DOES work at the beginning is because All Over Again is the last song of the night. The Chain talks about never breaking the chain whereas All Over Again admits the chain was broken but that one could still go on with what lies ahead.

Hello all—

Thanks so much for sharing those video links.

As someone who’s still not super excited and the line-up changes (and, for the record, Crowded House is my all-time favorite band, so it’s not like I dislike Neil Finn), the live version of “Hold Me” is pretty good!

Loved how Neil and Mike (and whoever is on third guitar) covered all those parts from the arrangement of the recording. And Neil and Christine sound fantastic together!

Neale Heywood. He was with Lindsey solo/Buckingham McVie from 1993-17 and with Fleetwood Mac since 1998.

Yeah, I remembered it was the longtime guy from Lindsey’s band. Just couldn’t remember his name when I was typing that reply! So, I guess the band got him in the divorce.
