Stevie Nicks and the Pretenders rock fans for three hours at The Palace
AUBURN HILLS, MI - They have two of the most distinctive voices in music history, Stevie Nicks and Chrissie Hynde. Question is: How do they sound today? The music icons were in concert at The Palace of Auburn Hills on Nicks' "24 Karat Gold Tour" on Sunday, November 27, 2016. The Pretenders: Chrissie Hynde put a little more umph when singing the "Brass in Pocket" line: "been driving Detroit leaning." She and the Pretenders are fresh off the release of their 10th studio album, "Alone," in 2016. Hynde and the band performed some new stuff, some old stuff and the band's biggest hits including "I'll Stand By You," "Back On The Chain Gang", "Don't Get Me Wrong," and the aforementioned "Brass in Pocket." To put it short and sweet, Hynde performed nearly every lyric and every note of each song the way it was meant to be performed. The 65 year old's voice is as powerful and flawless as ever. Hearing her live, along with a solid band was a real treat before the main course. Stevie Nicks: That main course was the living legend herself, Stevie Nicks. When you see her without her Fleetwood Mac band mates, you are treated to not only some of her big Mac hits, but many of her solo classics and duets. No, that wasn't Tom Petty singing with Nicks on their classic "Stop Draggin' My Heart Around." Nicks brought out the Pretenders lead singer Chrissie Hynde for a fun rendition of the 1981 hit which originally featured Petty. Nicks nearly 20 song setlist also included a few songs from her newest and 8th studio album, 2014's "24 Karat Gold." The album is actually filled with new versions of demos that Nicks recorded from 1969 to 1987 with a couple from the 90s. Each song has a story, and Nicks made sure to take a minute to tell the crowd about how her songs came to life. In her two hour set, Nicks mixed in three Fleetwood Mac hits with "Gypsy," "Gold Dust Woman" and "Rhiannon." Her solo hits included "Stand Back" and "Edge of Seventeen." She also threw in some deeper tracks with "If Anyone Falls," "Wild Heart," "Bella Donna" and "Enchanted." The 68 year old Nicks still has that amazing voice which is both hypnotizing and mesmerizing. I think fans would have liked to have heard a couple more Fleetwood Mac songs, and I'm not sure what happened to "Leather and Lace," the show closer for most of the tour so far, but if you get a chance to see Nicks in concert, it's well worth your time and money. No leather and lace but still a great show. Makes me wish I'd gone to the Grand Rapids show as well

Review: Stevie Nicks spreads 24 karat gold dust at The Palace
AUBURN HILLS -- At the start of her concert Sunday night, Nov. 27, Stevie Nicks told the crowd at The Place that, “This show is not what you are going to think it will be.” In other words, it was time for something other than a pro forma parade of hits -- which Nicks certainly has the catalog to do -- over its two hours and 17 songs. Those hits were there, of course, from a pounding “Stop Draggin’ My Heart” around with Chrissie Hynde of the Pretenders, who opened the show, guesting to Fleetwood Mac favorites such as “Gypsy,” “Gold Dust Woman” and “Rhiannon” and Nicks solo successes like “Stand Back” and “Edge Of Seventeen.” But the show -- ostensibly promoting Nicks’ 2014 rarities album “24 Karat Gold: Songs From The Vault” -- was also designed as a dive into what she called “the gothic trunk of magical, mysterious things, something different for me after all these years.” And that troll unearthed some of the night’s best moments. Nicks and her eight-member band started the night digging deep, in fact, with the country-flavored “Gold And Braid” from her 1988 box set “The Enchanted Works of Stevie Nicks” and a slightly twanged-up arrangement of “If Anyone Falls” from her 1983 sophomore solo album, “Wild Heart.” Nicks was in robust if not always accurate voice -- shuffling around the stage in formidable high heels and sporting eight different shawls during the course of the show plus, for one song, a full-length white fur coat -- as she pulled out “24 Karat Gold” rockers such as “Belle Fleur” and “Starshine” (a collaboration with Tom Petty that sat in the vaults for two decades) and the moody epic “Moonlight (A Vampire’s Dream).” She neatly pared the title tracks of her first two albums, “Bella Donna” and “Wild Heart,” draped in the original shawl she wore on the album cover for the former, while a muscular performance of the 1973 Buckingham Nicks track “Crying In The Night” added a bit of pre-Fleetwood Mac fame perspective to the show. Nicks had plenty of stories to tell as well, some specifically about the songs, others about the circumstances surrounding them. She spoke about the struggle, especially during the early 80s, of balancing her solo work with Fleetwood Mac -- “They’re not understanding. Very nice people, but not very understanding,” Nicks noted -- and she paid tribute to Prince with video screen images during “Stand Back” and “Edge Of Seventeen.” “Prince and I were friends,” Nicks acknowledged. “There’s a story. I’m not ready to tell it yet. It was a long, crazy friendship, a lot of phone calls, a lot of philosophy...” Nicks’ show accented the songs with plenty of eye candy, too, including animations, prepared videos and vintage photos on the rear-stage LED screen, while orb-shaped chandeliers and light bulbs floated overhead in shifting formations. The effect may have indeed been a different kind of show for Nicks, but also proof that different can be good. The Pretenders’ generous, hour-long opening set, meanwhile, was its own revelation. With Hynde’s punky swagger still evident -- and her voice as potent now as it was when the group emerged during the late 70s -- the quintet touched on its new album, “Alone” and Hynde’s 2014 solo album “Stockholm,” but mostly tore through 80s touchstones such as “Message Of Love,” “Back On The chain Gang,” “Don’t Get Me Wrong,” My City Was Gone,” “Mystery Achievement” and a ferocious “Middle Of The Road.” Hynde and company, including original drummer Martin Chambers, effectively dialed it down for torchy, soulful performances of “Hymn To her” and “I’ll Stand By You,” and by the time it wrapped with “Brass In Pocket” the group had done considerably more than just warm the Palace crowd up for Nicks. http://www.macombdaily.com/arts-and-...-at-the-palace |
It was a great show. I managed not to look at the set list beforehand this time, and it was a real thrill to be surprised both by what she did play and what she didn't. Biggest surprise inclusion for me was definitely "Crying in the Night," followed by "Gold and Braid." No "Dreams" and "Landslide"??? Yessss! (I love both songs but was glad for a break.) No interminable "Edge" walk, even better!
Highlight for me was "New Orleans." I've always liked that song a lot, and she sang it with such clarity and conviction, building to a very satisfying climax. "Moonlight," I appreciated her passion and looooved the quiet, acoustic-oriented arrangement - so much better than what's on In Your Dreams, which IMO oversells it. However, marred by her story of admiring Twilight. My bf, who's a much newer fan, was shocked. "That movie seems like the anti-Stevie because the woman is so weak," he said. Astute observation. Her voice sounded strong and warm throughout, and I believe she got more and more into it as she progressed. The hair-shaking on GDW was fun. Absolutely amazing that a 68-year-old woman can fill an arena. Huge admiration for her and her ability to connect with an audience - through story and humor, today, as much as through her (more limited but still strong) singing. |
Stevie Nicks opens vault at the Palace
On Sunday evening, two iconic female voices took to the stage for a dynamite rock show at the Palace of Auburn Hills. Stevie Nicks brought her 24 Karat Gold Tour and rocked a two-hour set that reached deep into the vaults but first, Chrissie Hynde and the rest of The Pretenders kicked the evening off with a boisterous hour set. The Pretenders kicked things off with a pair of new tracks including the title track to their latest release "Alone" and the bluesy "Gotta Wait". Later, they would also perform "Down The Wrong Way" from Hynde's 2014 solo album, but for the most part, the set leaned towards the band's hits. All of the eighties classics from "Back on the Chain Gang" to "Message of Love" to the socially aware "My City Was Gone" were on the bill and still packed a punch. Hynde's voice is still flawless and the band's punk essence is still there. Passionate performances of "I'll Stand By You" and closer "Brass In Pocket" were the crowd favorites and left them more than ready for Nicks to take to the stage. She did so with the country-tinged "Gold and Braid", a deep track from her 1988 box set, The Enchanted Works of Stevie Nicks. If those in attendance didn't already realize that this was going to be a different show, Nicks immediately let them know that not only was the show going to be darker but, "This show is not what you think it is going to be. It's something different for me after all these years . I didn't want to come out here and do the same Stevie Nicks stuff that you've seen 5,000 times before." She and her band went on to live up to that introduction as she reached back deep into the vaults and played a number of rarities and some tracks that she had never played on tour including "Starshine", a track she wrote with Tom Petty that had been buried for two decades. She also performed her Hurricane Katrina-inspired track "New Orleans", which is another song that she hadn't performed live before this tour. Throughout the evening, Nicks shared a number of stories behind many of the set's songs, including talking about how, after taking a step back from the music industry, she was inspired to write "Moonlight" after becoming enthralled with the second Twilight movie, "This song for me was a touchstone. It's my favorite song to sing, and really, my favorite song I've ever written." Although it was great to hear some of her lesser-played songs, it was also great to hear that powerful voice on many of her solo classics and some Fleetwood Mac mainstays as well. There were passionate performances of "Gyspy", "Stand Back" and "Edge of Seventeen", which featured images on the video screen behind her of her friend Prince, who she said was just a friend, bur a friendship that held a story she's not quite ready to tell yet. The show also paid tribute to the sense of sight with moving chandeliers and light bulbs, huge LED screens, and, of course, many wardrobe changes for Nicks, who came out in various shawls, capes and even a full length white fur coat at one point. She also began and ended the set flashing the words "Detroit Rock City" on the big screen behind her and she seemed to truly believe that as she praised the crowd throughout the show for their energy. Nicks finished the evening with a encore of Fleetwood Mac classic "Rhiannon" before taking a bow with the rest of the band. Just before the house lights came up, her name flashed highlighted in bright red flashed across the video screens and seemed to be the exclamation to what was a fascinating evening. Stevie Nicks puts on a great show
After years of being a Stevie Nicks fan, I was thrilled to finally score tickets for her 24 Karot Gold tour in Auburn Hills, Michigan. The show was at The Palace of Auburn Hills. Nicks’ opening act was The Pretenders, with front-runner Chrissie Hynde on lead vocals. I thought the Pretender’s show was great. Chrissie ran around the stage, had lots of energy, and played a few incredible guitar solos. Their tracks included “I’ll Stand By You,” and “Brass in Pocket.” They played for about an hour. After they left the stage, the excitement for Stevie Nicks, of Fleetwood Mac fame, could be felt throughout the venue. I was almost shaking with anticipation; after years of waiting I was finally going to see Stevie Nicks in the flesh! When she finally entered the stage, the crowd went wild! Everyone was screaming and clapping, and cheering for her. It was an amazing moment that I’ll remember it forever. Stevie kicked off her two-hour concert with a few songs from her 2015 Album “24 Karot Gold,” including “Gypsy” and “Stop Dragging My Heart Around.” Her show featured video graphics that played behind her, and lamp lights dropped down from the ceiling. She also included a tribute to the late Prince, who was a long-time friend of hers. She ended the show with one of her most famous songs, “Edge of Seventeen.” Of course, after an amazing show, the audience demanded an encore. After about five minutes of cheering, Stevie entered the stage again, and played one of my personal favorites, “Rhiannon.” I was extremely pleased with the layout of the concert stage and the setlist. The only complaint I had was that she didn’t play “Landslide,” which was a song I would have loved to have heard. Other than that, the show was incredible. After her encore, she thanked the crowd, took a bow with her stage crew and band, and then she was gone.
