'Songbird' producers to release Lindsey compilation next

LOS ANGELES--Hot off the heels of Christine McVie's first-ever solo compilation, Songbird, the same team led by visionary producer Glyn Johns has announced a new compilation featuring the music of fellow Fleetwood Mac veteran, Lindsey Buckingham.

"After completing Songbird, we wondered whether there were any other artists whose classic songs we could improve with our masterful touch," said Johns.

"Someone suggested Lindsey Buckingham. 'Brilliant!' I said. A bit of tweaking on my laptop and many beverages later, we soon had a complete reworking of Lindsey's catalog."

"After that, it was just a matter of selecting the best track listing. Taking a cue from Songbird, we used our patented song selection method of putting song names in a hat and drawing out ten of his very best tunes completely at random."

"We think this compilation will have broad appeal," said Johns. "Some of these tracks haven't been heard by anyone before--even Lindsey Buckingham--so it really represents the best of his body of work."

"If this was the last album Lindsey put out, it will be a fantastic legacy to finish off his career, just like Songbird helped finish off Christine's legacy."

The expertly curated track listing for Lindsey Buckingham - I'm So Afraid To Listen is as follows:

1. D.W. Suite - extended mix
2. It Was I - radio single
3. Not That Funny - full 18 minute live version
4. Play In The Rain - part twelve
5. Holiday Road - dog only vocal mix
6. The Complete Poetry of Emily Dickinson
7. Voice Message 6/3/2021
8. Bwana Family Man - mashup
9. I'm So Afraid - orchestral remix
10. Go Your Own Way - percussion remix

"Of course there were one or two songs we absolutely had to include," Johns added. "When I heard what Dick Van Dyke had managed to do with I'm So Afraid, I knew I had made the right choice."

Johns explained that the ninety-six year old Van Dyke still had his one-man-band equipment from the Mary Poppins film, and was all too keen to have a go at layering new instrumentals over Buckingham's haunting vocals. "Some say that Dick has started to lose his sense of hearing or rhythm in recent years, but my secretary checked what he had submitted and she didn't notice anything amiss. I had her send the track straight to the mastering studio. I can't wait to hear it for the first time when I get my copy of the album."

"Mr. Van Dyke was delighted and honored to be a part of this compilation for Buckingham Palace on the occasion of Her Majesty's jubilee," a spokesperson for the famed nonagenarian said in a statement.

Johns says that he is personally happiest with the percussion remix of Go You Own Way.

"Go Your Own Way is ubiquitous. It's the quintessential Lindsey Buckingham song. So we made some improvements. Obviously the original drumming needed an update, so we pushed that back in the mix and brought in the Desi Arnaz Tribute Band. These guys are great. Fans will be left speechless!"

Lindsey Buckingham - I'm So Afraid To Listen will be available in stores soon, pending legal proceedings between the production team and Lindsey Buckingham.

Bonus disc: Two hours of psychobabble word salad stage banter.

An 18 minute Not That Funny, is DEFINITELY not that fun. ny.

What was used to create those timeless pan flute sounds on "I'm So Afraid - orchestral remix"?

bwboy 07-16-2022 08:33 AM

Holiday Road- dog only vocal mix.

That made me laugh so hard!

I’ve already reserved my copy off Amazon!

The attached file photo was supplied (but I suspect a Roland XV synth keyboard may have also been involved).

I hope they don't make a similar mistake they did with the Songbird song.

bombaysaffires 07-16-2022 02:47 PM

is this a sign of the things to come now that all have sold off their catalogues??

The artists no longer own the publishing rights, and the record company owns the masters.... so the two can collaborate to do whatever they wish without the pesky artist getting involved?

I can see why Chris would agree to "work" with them (ie help support/promote it) but I just don't see Lindsey participating. So now his work is out there for whomever to do whatever with? (at least his FM work).

Perhaps this is why Stevie chose not to sell 100% of her rights, but only 80%.

Not looking forward to Glyn touching Lindsey's work. Lindsey made very deliberate production choices on his songs (not all of which I found appealing, but it was his choice to make), and having someone with more mainstream or even pedestrian sensibilities f**k around with them is just gross. We shall see.

Bombaysaffires you need to reread the thread more carefully :]

That beats Donna Summer's album studio version of Love to love you baby (16:50). I remember because DJs used to name that song the 17 minutes orgasm. ;)

I guess the longest FM live version I've heard is World Turning Live at Wembley (12:30), Tusk Deluxe.

The longest Rhiannon live song I've heard is 9:20 (Tucson, Tusk Deluxe too).
And the longest GYOW is 9:23 (Wembley Tusk Deluxe again).

I agree 18 minutes is wait too much. It's almost a sitcom episode.

oh dear..... what an embarrassing faux pas on my part :distress:

thanks for setting me straight!!

it's been a week of everyone getting on my last nerve, so I am primed for more bulls*t

Dick Van Dyke cracked me up.

Kudos to DownOnRodeo for such a convincing parody

jbrownsjr 07-16-2022 07:01 PM

I actually love this disc!!! Isn't that weird??

nicepace 07-18-2022 01:35 PM

I'm checking my calendar, and it's not April 1. Does that mean this ISN'T a joke????

It 'tis indeed a joke. Doesn't need to be April 1 to believe that hogwash. But, very funny creative story that lines up with how bizarre this disc is.

I don't wanna be a solo artist! Please buy my solo collection that I'm promoting.

Macfan4life 07-19-2022 01:11 PM

This was good. When I first read this last week, I fell for it hook line and sinker. I did think the Not That Funny live version was a troll at fans but didn't think too much more about it. In today's world truth is stranger than fiction.

Improve my songs by removing my own piano work on some of them.

I mainly play electric piano and organ, but here's someone else playing it.

Macfan4life 07-20-2022 06:54 AM

Hold on.... Stevie's on the phone with Mary Turner. She's telling everyone not to buy Christine's new solo album. Stevie told Christine. I told you so.

It's just...I have no words! We must wait to hear it, but I'm really impressed about this! 18 minutes of Not That Funny! The dog singing Holiday Road! (Haha not really)
But I'm thrilled about DW Suite, Bwana Family and Play In The Rain, can't lie!!

I’m pretty sure some of those 1990 versions of World Turning were clocking in at 20 minutes in total with Mick’s circus going on in the middle. Same with Not That Funny on The Dance tour. That had to go on for 15-17 minutes easily. In either case…

jmn3 07-22-2022 11:51 AM

I read this with full belief until I got to Dick Van Dyke at which point I spit out my drink laughing!

Trash. Mick's Vesturbation and the breakdown in NTF. Do they really think people want to hear that sh*t?

I love the long version of NTF. Plus, I loved how Stevie leaves the stage for NTF and ISA. Get to watch the 4 jam.

I've told the story a million times. In high school, my friends would tolerate me showing them the Mirage video, over and over, ON THE ONE CONDITION THAT WE SKIPPED NTF.

They HATED NTF.

Sheeeeeeit, son. I had enough of it the first time I heard it.

I hate punk music, and most hard rock. I love melody and harmony. Scream at me, and we're DONE.

Macfan4life 07-24-2022 02:25 PM

Like Homer, I also had my friend walk out of forcing them to watch the Mirage concert. I was so offended and could not believe they were not into it. Looking back maybe it was my twirling in my cape that drove them over the edge.

In the 80s I did not like NTF Mirage but now its one of my favorite songs from that concert. I love watching Chris bang that piano and clap. The way she shakes her head back and forth is so cool. I love the banter between John, Mick and Lindsey.

Homer is so sensitive to Lindsey's rock out performances vocally and with guitar. I don't get it. So if I SCREAM AT YOU, YOU WILL DISAPPEAR?!!!!??

You dont like punk music but like Law and Order? Got it. Ok. Everyone thought it was cool when Stevie screamed at the end of Rhiannon but Lindsey cant do it? Ok Got it!

Personally, that umpteen-minute Not That Funny performance caught on the Mirage concert video is one of my favorite FM live performances. Christine exits and returns at just the right moments. The guys have this extended, intimate moment on stage that is, even with the goofy mugging and gestures, quite sophisticated and well-executed. The return of the honky-tonk piano signals at first a sly, sexy passage, and then an all-out party romp.
