A preview of Rhino Records’ latest reissue project, Fleetwood Mac’s glossy 1987 album Tango in the Night

Later this year, Rhino Records will be reissuing Fleetwood Mac’s 14th studio album Tango in the Night, the latest release in a series of deluxe packages focused on the band’s back catalog (Rumours, Tusk, Mirage). Although details of the reissue are still forthcoming, it is expected to contain the remastered original album; bonus discs of session material and outtakes; new liner notes; and rare period photographs.

On December 8, 2016, Rolling Stone contributing writer David Wild confirmed in a Twitter post that he had written the new liner notes for the reissue project. It remains to be seen which route Wild took in reflecting on the tumultuous Tango in the Night sessions, which were first laid bare in drummer Mick Fleetwood’s revealing 1990 autobiography Fleetwood: My Life and Adventures in Fleetwood Mac. Those circumstances ultimately led to the departure of key member Lindsey Buckingham and the addition of his replacements, guitarists Billy Burnette and Rick Vito, to support the album’s ensuing world tour. As a band practically defined by its personal dramas, it would almost seem careless to omit or downplay such a critical juncture in the band’s history.

Packed with the radio-friendly singles “Big Love,” “Seven Wonders, “Little Lies,” and “Everywhere,” Tango in the Night attracted a whole new generation of fans and contributed to the Fleetwood Mac’s legacy as one of the most enduring and resilient recording acts in rock history. At the time, MTV networks saturated music-video play with the album’s singles (a grand total of six was released!), which propelled the album to become an international smash. To date, the album has sold more than five million copies in North America and two million overseas.

In 2014, Mike Duquette, founder of the catalog music blog The Second Disc, featured Tango in the Night as a proposed reissue in his column Reissue Theory. In anticipation of the Tango in the Night reissue, we look back on his thoughtful post (including a hypothetical track list) and celebrate the album that marked the return of Fleetwood Mac to the forefront of the vibrant 1987 pop music scene:

Quote:

Reissue Theory: Fleetwood Mac, "Tango in the Night"

Welcome to another installment of Reissue Theory, where we focus on great albums and the reissues they could someday see. As we welcome one of our favorite ladies in rock back to her famous band, we remember their last album altogether and the pop success it enjoyed.

One of the best pieces of classic rock news to come out of this nascent year is easily the announcement of singer/keyboardist Christine McVie returning to Fleetwood Mac. McVie retired from the band (and touring in general) after the band's incredibly successful The Dance tour in the late 1990s, leaving singer Stevie Nicks, singer/guitarist Lindsay Buckingham, bassist (and ex-husband) John McVie and drummer Mick Fleetwood to continue as a quartet, but made two surprise appearances with the band in England last year, later expressing her desire to rejoin the band.

While no official plans have been firmed up (beyond the possibility of a full tour), it certainly provokes one to think of the phenomenal albums the quintet have created - in particular, their final set as a quintet, 1987's Tango in the Night. One of the band's most modern (for its time, anyway) productions was also one of its most rapturously received, going triple platinum in the U.S. (and eight times platinum in the U.K., where it was the first Mac album since the Peter Green era to chart higher in England than the States) and spinning off four Top 40 hits. For all its success, though, it's one of two by this lineup of the band (the other being its predecessor, 1982's Mirage) that have not been remastered or expanded by Warner Bros./Rhino.

I think you know where this is leading, of course: after the jump, we'll be looking out for love for Tango in the Night, and imagine what an expanded reissue might look like!

The general history of Fleetwood Mac alone is one for the books. After gradually moving away from blues rock (with guitarists like Peter Green, Jeremy Spencer and Bob Welch at the helm), the addition of power couple Buckingham and Nicks (whose eponymous 1973 album is one of the greatest high-profile LPs unreleased to CD) gave the band a chart-topping album with their 1975 self-titled LP, which had hits in "Rhiannon" and "Say You Love Me." Against all odds, the band survived sex, drugs and three relationships gone awry (Buckingham and Nicks, the McVies and Fleetwood and his wife) to create Rumours in 1977, a pop masterpiece that yielded four Top 10 hits and went 19 times platinum in the United States.

Follow-up albums Tusk (an ambitious 1979 double LP) and Mirage (1982) were commercially successful though not as rapturously received as Rumours, and the band largely went their separate ways through the decade. All but John McVie took stabs at a solo career, with Nicks having the most chart success with singles like "Edge of Seventeen," "Stop Draggin' My Heart Around" with Tom Petty and "Stand Back." (Buckingham had more modest successes with "Trouble," "Go Insane" and the maniacally catchy "Holiday Road" from National Lampoon's Vacation.)

But the past was starting to catch up with the band: Fleetwood went bankrupt while Nicks and John McVie suffered drug-related issues, with Nicks checking into the Betty Ford Clinic. Would Mirage (decidedly not a favorite of Buckingham's) be their last effort? Fortunately, Buckingham gradually invited his old bandmates to participate in what was conceived as another solo album with producer Richard Dashut, and another Fleetwood Mac LP began to form.

Tango in the Night bears heavy elements of Buckingham's solo work - propulsive and jittery, with occasional flashes of out-there trickery (the echoing repetition of "Caroline," the off-kilter choruses of singles "Big Love" and "Family Man"). But there are some shining moments for the band's leading ladies. Nicks wrote or co-wrote "Seven Wonders," "Welcome to the Room...Sara" and "When I See You Again" and, by most accounts, committed them to tape pretty quickly (she only spent about two weeks recording with the band, otherwise busy with promoting her 1985 solo album Rock a Little and battling addiction). But it's McVie that really gets to shine on Tango: the singer who gave us "You Make Loving Fun," "Say You Love Me" and the beautiful Rumours deep cut "Songbird" is in rare form, writing or co-writing nearly half the record, including major singles "Everywhere" and "Little Lies," plus forgotten single "Isn't It Midnight" and album side "Mystified."

Shortly after the release of the album, Buckingham succumbed to the pressure of what he felt was having to steer the band, and departed. The band continued as a sextet, adding singer/songwriter/guitarists Rick Vito and Billy Burnette and chasing a more adult contemporary sound on Behind the Mask (1990) and Time (1995), the latter of which saw Nicks and Vito depart, replaced by Bekka Bramlett (daughter of Bonnie) and Dave Mason of Traffic. (The classic lineup, sans Christine McVie, have recorded one album, Say You Will (2003) and a 2013 EP.)

While reissues of Fleetwood Mac, Rumours and Tusk were heavy on outtake material, a healthy deluxe version of Tango in the Night could be assembled from released material. Four non-LP B-sides turned up during the singles period for the album, and five dance mixes were commissioned from major remixers. (A new mix of "Isn't It Midnight" would surface on a box set in 1992.) These tracks, combined with a few possible things in the vault, give us the bonus disc we present to you as part of this Reissue Theory post.

Fleetwood Mac Tango In the Night 3CD, 1 DVD & 1LP

Coming February 24, 2017 pre-order your copy today! Orders with both pre-order and in stock items will have all in stock items shipped immediately!

3CD, 1 DVD & 1LP Set!

Originally released in 1987, Tango In the Night was the 14th studio album from Fleetwood Mac, the fifth from the line-up of Lindsey Buckingham, Stevie Nicks, Christine McVie, John McVie, and Mick Fleetwood.

The album began as a Lindsey Buckingham solo project but morphed into an album for the group instead and contains the singles "Seven Wonders", "Little Lies", "Big Love", and "Everywhere".

"Artistically and commercially, the Stevie Nicks/Lindsey Buckingham/Mick Fleetwood/Christine and John McVie edition of Fleetwood Mac had been on a roll for over a decade when Tango in the Night was released in early 1987. This would, unfortunately, be Buckingham's last album with the pop/rock supergroup -- and he definitely ended his association with the band on a creative high note. Serving as the album's main producer, Buckingham gives an edgy quality to everything from the haunting "Isn't It Midnight" to the poetic "Seven Wonders" to the dreamy "Everywhere." Though Buckingham doesn't over-produce, his thoughtful use of synthesizers is a major asset. Without question, "Family Man" and "Caroline" are among the best songs ever written by Buckingham, who consistently brings out the best in his colleagues on this superb album." - allmusic.com, Alex Henderson

Features:
• 3CD, 1 DVD & 1LP set
• Remastered

Full tracklisting to be announced.

The articles and link I've posted are all new, they just reference the old article as a guideline to guess what will be on the reissue.

Looks like we have a pre-order announcement.
Hopefully Amazon will be not far behind.

Even though I am in Canada I find that I tend to better ordering from Amazon UK, was able to get the Tusk box set for much cheaper then ordering through Canada or the US.

HomerMcvie 01-13-2017 01:56 PM

I got the deluxe Mirage for $43, by just waiting a couple of months after it was released.

Just sayin'...

James Kirk 01-13-2017 01:57 PM

Yes, I did post the wrong link, I meant to post the one you did :)

apologizes to all, guess I got a little ahead of myself.

Boy if this comes to pass and with the Buckingham McVie news, this has turned into a rather exciting Fleetwood Mac day :)

Amazon doesn't yet have the track list for the 3 CD/LP/DVD edition, but it does have the 2 CD one. Here it is. Three things:

(1) Odd that it has DES, BOM, and Ricky, but apparently not "You and I Part 1" [unless it's part of track 12, below].
(2) Where is "Joan of Arc"?
(3) What is "Where We Belong"?

1. Down Endless Street (Remastered)
2. Special Kind of Love (Demo)
3. Seven Wonders (Early Version)
4. Tango in the Night (Demo)
5. Mystified (Alternate Version)
6. Book of Miracles (Instrumental)
7. Where We Belong (Demo)
8. Ricky (Remastered)
9. Juliet (Run-Through)
10. Isn't It Midnight (Alternate Mix)
11. Ooh My Love (Demo)
12. Mystified (Instrumental Demo)
13. You And I, Part II (Full Version)

bwboy 01-13-2017 05:19 PM

Any guesses on the 3rd disc? My bet is it's the audio of the Shake the Cage tour concert filmed at the Cow Palace in San Francisco in 1987 and released on vhs and DVD as Tango in the Night Live.

This would be interesting, since Lindsey had left the band and was replaced by Billy Burnette and Rick Vito during this time. But it would fit the pattern of the other deluxe editions. I'll only buy the 2 CD version UNLESS the new release features other songs not included on the original release, like the Tusk album had. If it's like Mirage, with only the audio of the original concert with no extra songs, forget it.

Is anyone else perplexed as to why this album is announced so much closer to the release date, when the other albums had months of notice? And why the hold up on what's on the 3rd CD?

After this, the white album will be next to get an expanded edition.

Personally, I find the fact that Joan of Arc and the Big Love duet have been pulled the most interesting fact, especially since it's release was announced on the same day that the news came out that we would be getting a Nicks-less album by Spring.
I hate to say it, but I don't think this bodes well for the future of the band!

I'm now of the opinion that the Fleetwood Mac name gets laid to rest in 2018. Stevie will go solo full time while the others continue on as Buckingham McVie. Kind of like when "All In The Family" became "Archie Bunker's Place."

Ultimately, if it means a few more albums can come out without all the drama and BS, I can live with it.

I'm inclined to agree with you. I think they're already contractually obligated to do the tour at the end of the year, but I don't see it continuing beyond that....I think there will be some hard feelings over this whole album situation, so I don't think the vibe on the road will be as good.
John has said that he pretty much wants to retire by the time he's 75, so we might see the other three continue on for a while, but it won't be as Fleetwood Mac....I think Mick would be OK using the name no matter who's in the band....anyone, that is, except John!
Plus, Chris is going on 74.....as much as she loved being back, I think it had taken a lot out of her by the end of 2015, and that's just going to increase.
Yep....I think Fleetwood Mac is winding down, sooner and in a more different way than anyone had planned or hoped for. But I have to admit.....I'm kind of interested and excited to see what comes next!

deribish 01-14-2017 08:12 AM

That track listing that listed "Joan of Arc" and "Big Love duet" was fake. It was from a few years ago. It was just a website proposing what could be on the outtake disc. That was not an official track list by any means.

Apart from the fact that, as Deribish already said, the previous was just a speculation list, actually the article is from the 6th of January and also there hasn't been any involvement by the members of the band in the late reissues so I doubt the tracklist has any link to the state of the band at the moment. If anything, to capitalize on the alleged loss of Stevie they would have included more tracks that featured her if it were otherwise.

Fleetwood Mac To Release Tango In The Night Deluxe Editions Feb 24th

Friday The 13th isn't so bad after all.... Looks like another reissue is on the way and rather soon! Amazon has Fleetwood Mac's Tango In The Night Deluxe, Expanded and single disc versions set for a February 24th release date. This is amazing!! Tango In The Night, originally released in 1987 (30 years ago this year) is Fleetwood Mac's 2nd most successful album in terms of sales behind Rumours.

Amazon has the tracklist of the 2CD Expanded Edition listed and if Rhino is following a formula on these Fleetwood Mac Remastered Reissues CD3 of the Deluxe Edition is likely the audio from the Tango In The Night Tour video that was first released on VHS and subsequently issued on DVD. The DVD in this package is likely a 5.1 mix of the original album (although personally, I'd like to see them release the videos for the singles Big Love, Little Lies, Seven Wonders and Everywhere). David Wild (on Twitter) recently eluded to writing new liner notes for Fleetwood Mac like previous reissues and he confirmed it today on Twitter. Configurations of the release look to be in line with previous releases - 2CD, 3CD/1DVD/1LP and a single CD of the album - all remastered. More info on this will follow.

Links to pre-order are at the bottom.

For some reason, this hasn't appeared in the UK Amazon yet. I shall be rushing to buy a copy when it's out though. The album that started me on my Fleetwood Mac journey as a teenager...

Lots of Buckhingham/McVie news... wow can't wait to hear this.

You and I part 1? I love that song and I want it on my iTunes.

I think most of us love that song. So I wonder why it isn't on the track listing for the bonus CD?

I would love to hear an extended version of that. The guitar at the end is beautiful

I am hopeful that it is on the third CD, and hopeful that the third CD has a lot more out takes and early versions of songs. I really want the alternate version of Tango that surfaced about six months ago. It sounded fantastic! I am not really interested in a live set with Billy Burnett and Rick Vito - nothing against them, but Tango is pure Lindsey, with help from Richard Dashut, Christine, John and Mick, and ever so slightly, Stevie (five to seven days in the studio, so the story goes).

Same here. I owned the Tango concert on VHS back in the day, and it was nothing special. Much rather hear ALL the b-sides and outtakes.

I hope they include demos for Little Lies and Everywhere on Disc 3. It would seem like a glaring omission if the didn't include some alt version of these big hits. Actually, as I look at the track listing for Disc 2, there's no alternates of Big Love either-- a major single from the album. So I hope Disc 3 has more studio outtakes.

Leaving You And I, Part I off this would be an egregious error. It would also be hugely disappointing for the DVD to be the already released concert which is atrocious, mostly due to the Stevie close ups.

I agree on both counts. I love You and I 1..

I would like a live Everywhere from 1987-88, but not the one from the video.

The DVD would be the DVD audio of the album Tango in the Night. And the 3rd CD will likely be just the audio of the concert, just like the expanded editions of Rumours, Tusk, and Mirage were all audios of concerts.

I imagine You and I Part I is being released as all one track with Part II on the bonus disc hence the somewhat misleading title for the last track thereon.

Amazon doesn't yet have the track list for the 3 CD/LP/DVD edition, but it does have the 2 CD one. Here it is. Three things:

(1) Odd that it has DES, BOM, and Ricky, but apparently not "You and I Part 1" [unless it's part of track 12, below].
(2) Where is "Joan of Arc"?
(3) What is "Where We Belong"?

1. Down Endless Street (Remastered)
2. Special Kind of Love (Demo)
3. Seven Wonders (Early Version)
4. Tango in the Night (Demo)
5. Mystified (Alternate Version)
6. Book of Miracles (Instrumental)

9. Juliet (Run-Through)
10. Isn't It Midnight (Alternate Mix)
11. Ooh My Love (Demo)
12. Mystified (Instrumental Demo)
13. You And I, Part II (Full Version)

I'm thinking that that tracklisting still isn't the final one. The bonus discs on the recent remasters have tended to be pretty full with 20-ish tracks on them whereas that tracklist looks like its missing about 6 or 7 tracks. It's a shame there's no stand alone 3CD version like there was with Tusk. 1st CD the original album, 2nd CD the 4 b-sides plus the 12 inch mixes and 3rd CD an alternate version of the album with extra stuff.
