I've killed more snakes than you lately.
Let's see:
1. Moccasin hiding under a pot. "Death by hoe". 2. Moccasin near back door of house. "Death by stick". 3. Moccasin crossing over our driveway. "Death by Vehicle". 4. Chicken Snake, even though not poisonous, he was too close to my head. "Death by hoe". 5. Not sure on this one, possibly a Ground Rattler. "Death by mower". Anyone top that? |
Wow,I've been lucky so far,What part of the woods you live.My Mom ran over a snake ages ago with a lawnmower,it was diced up,About 18 years ago my ex-neigbor had a python in her apt above me,she gave me a chance to pet him, it was cool.

You win! Wow. I think you qualify for your own Discovery Channel or Animal Planet show.
How great of an increase is this over an average month/summer/etc? |

Nope, can't even come close.

haha awesome!! I grew up in the country, next to a corn field.... lets just say that a fair share of corn snakes had "accidents" that I may or may not have been involved in. They slipped and fell on a hoe one or ten times. I'm more of a spider killer myself. |
this thread is making me hyperventilate.

That's shocking. I'd move.. I once saw an elderly woman kill a snake in her front yard with a machete. It was... disturbing. ;) |

Macfan, I do live close to the woods. Near a few swamps too.
Jenniferuk, My own Aninmal Planet show....lol, that's funny. And is it an increase over normal? Yes. We've had more rain than usual it's got them moving. Golddustdrummer, "Spider Killer", you should see my other thread about that. MylittleD, I can't move. I guess I'll live and die in Dixie. We have a farm with a few ponds, so there's always snakes to be found. I've even stepped on a few barefooted (don't that sound country?). You'll find that you have super powers when you step on a snake. I used to hunt them when we had the time. I don't like hunting animals, gave that up many moons ago. Just felt like it was wrong, unless you were doing it for food. To this day, I have no idea why anyone would want to hang a dead animals head on a wall. But snakes are different. I don't go out of my way to find them anymore, but if I see one.... off with his head. |
snakes seriously freak me out~ even the garter(*sp) ones that are totally harmless, one slithered over my foot in the yard & i fainted, scared this **** out of me~ i have snake nighmares too~
but i love to watch the animal planet show where this guy goes out trying to find anaconda's, my god are those things huge, their heads are bigger than mine~ now that's a snake & it's on tv, that is about as close as i can get to a snake:lol:~ |

That's so creepy that one slithered across your foot though. |
Those poor snakes!

lol...I'd have to move if there were that many snakes in my yard...I have a snake phobia. Even seeing them on tv makes my heart race and I get nauseated.

I like snakes, in the area where I reside is what is called the rattlesnake capitol of the US.
People freely have shows where they catch/handle/display live snakes for those who have the heart to be around 'em. I cannot ever recall a time I have killed a snake, I usually catch 'em and release back into the wild (As I do with my fave critters scorpions). |

And I've had a Moccasin chase me. All I had that day was a Crossman Pellet/BB gun, in other words "one" shot. And no, I'm not Davy Crockett. But I do have a coonskin cap (that's actually the truth). |

ones seem more aggresive. It was on one of our pond dams and I guess he didn't want me there. |

Rattlesnake run over in Vegas: "Death by ho!" c'mon, that's funny! |
Anyway - My hand to God, we had a boa constrictor in our backyard once - HUGE one. Right on the border between the yard and where the woods starts. Obviously it was somebody's pet that had gotten out. My parents called Animal Control and everybody called everybody and pointed fingers at each other and fought over whose job it was to come get the thing, and eventually somebody showed up and took it away. Interesting experience for them, at any rate.

On a side note, my brother got bit and scratched by a squirrel today. He had been a pet of my brother's, but we let him go in our yard. Well I guess he's got a little wild since he's been out. I guess he's been talking to those country squirrels, and their country ways are rubbing off on him. The day before, I had handed him a Nutter Butter sandwich cookie. He loves those. Anyway, if he bites me he will suffer the same fate as the snakes. |
It's kind of late to be killing snakes...BUT!
My nephew and I were about to go outside a few days ago, and I looked down on our front porch and guess what was crawling across the bricks? Some big ole snake. And once again.....................DEATH BY HOE. |

March 12, 2010 while mowing grass (yes, MARCH) I saw a "cut up" moccasin.
Though fresh-cut, it wasn't from me...hmmm..... |
All my life I had a massive phobia with snakes, 6 months ago I freaked out when my 14yr old son walked in the house with a 6ft Australian coastal python around his neck, he tormented me for over 2 months, wanting me to touch/ nurse/ have it around my neck , he thought it was hilarious hearing me scream everyday he brought it out of it's cage, often he would sneak up behind me when I was doing the dishes or in the pantry, I would scream & almost pass out, it escaped from it cage I was petrified for 2 DAYS until it was found, which was hiding near my bedroom:distress::distress::distress Anyway not long after I thought I would give reverse psychology a go, as still my son was getting a kick out of scaring the $#@T out of me. I finally worked up the courage to touch it, after a few days I was OK with holding it, now I love, appreciate & respect pythons.. our deadly snakes we have downunder, I don't mind them dying from the hoe!!!

While not exactly a snake, there's a armadillo that's making holes all in
my yard. His days are numbered............ |
wow.I've have not seen any this year over here.I remember when I was little, my mom sliced and diced a good size snake with the riding lawnmower,I dont recall what it was ,but it shot out of the mower deck like pieces of hot dogs.Say about 18 years ago ,my ex-neighbor had a python snake around her neck, boy it was a big sob.
I was not afraid of him,but ,I had nights of thinking of it coming into my apt and cuddle up with me in bed. |
I've seen plenty...
of rattlers in my neck of the woods, but to my surprise I have yet to see scorpions...Weird.

Here in Florida you see all kinds of critters. I was stupid and not thinking last night up in the morning and opened the front door and as soon as I did, the hairiest spider I've seen since being here, ran in. It's like they wait at my front door at night wanting in at the chance. And don't think about leaving somewhere during the day and forgetting to leave on any outside lights when coming home at night. I've had to immediately run inside and flip on the lights as soon as I turn the key. And quickly slam the door and pray no unwelcome visiters followed me in. If I'm careful at the door, nothing seems to get in otherwise and no other problems. But you do have yard snakes here, especially outside the city in more scrubbier/woodsy areas and I have seen a very tiny baby scorpion but the ones here aren't harmful unless you have allergic reactions to stings. I just stay clear of Florida critters if at all possible and a screened lanai is an outdoor must here.

Here on Long Island, we're kinda boring with our wildlife (OK, I heard about deer problems further out east from me), but we do sometimes see a garter snake minding it's own business now and then. Now, our funny wildlife thing is definitely the squirrels I get in my backyard. Y'see, we give bread to the birds outside, but the squirrels seem to enjoy eating it too, and while doing so, they tend to look inside, giving a look that says they want an iced tea. Seriously.
