Another recycled thread...BTM outtakes

Damn!

I just revisited the Other Side Of The Mask (the Behind The Mask outtakes) CD.

It still pisses me off that Rick Vito got the short end of the stick when it came to his songwriting contributions to the album. "Stand On The Rock" was by far his weakest tune, yet it MADE the album. Both "Intuition" (which eventually appeared in a much different form on his own King Of Hearts album) and "Got No Home" were far & away much better recordings and even had "hit potential" (something quite lacking with "Stand On The Rock").

Even Billy Burnette's tune "Victim Of Love" was quite catchy.

And, although the BTM version of "In The Back Of My Mind" is consistently in my top 5 ALL-TIME Mac tunes, the quite different outtake on this one (minus the long spacey intro of the final version) makes it almost a toss up as to which version I like better...this version has slightly different lyrics in the bridge. Billy's & Christine's voices really fit well together. Besides the missing intro, Rick Vito's killer guitar solo at the end is missing.

Even Stevie's "Affairs Of The Heart" outtakes become almost catchy on this.

The nearly "dance" type remix of "Save Me" is awesome. And, although the intro is nearly identical to the final version, it sounds crisper & cleaner, with each instrument clearly defineable. Then from there into a quick section that is bass-driven ("John, you're a MONSTER"). I think this version is 10x's better than the BTM version. Christine sings different lyrics and has a slightly different melody line in this one. Rick Vito's guitar tone on the solos & fills is just "buttah".

GarboSpeaks! 01-21-2006 03:24 AM

Now I gotta go find these and have another listen. I can't place a different Save Me at all, nor In The Back of My Mind. Do I have it and it was overlooked or am I missing something? To the bat cave.......

macfan 57 01-21-2006 06:57 AM

Except for "Behind The Mask" & "When The Sun Goes Down", I generally prefer the outtake versions to the album versions. I especially LOVE "Intuition" & Billy's "The Game Of Love". I like all of Rick's songs that didn't make the album. He got the shaft.

Rick himself didn't decide which of his songs he wanted on the album?

Alas, I haven't heard these. :distress:

Thanks for these - I've never heard BTM so outtakes are great - although it sounds possible I could be disappointed by the official versions.

PS: the link for DYK seems to actaully be HFs.

Oops! It's fixed now. I think of these as an interesting alternative to the officially released versions. I quite enjoy them. :)

To this day, I think the record was sabotaged because you'd have to be a horse's a$$ not to recognize the clear superiority of the alt. versions to what went on the final press. I mean really.

chiliD 01-23-2006 12:27 PM

Since I posted this, I've found out (from Rick Vito himself) that "Got No Home" was NOT from the Behind The Mask sessions, it was recorded for consideration as one of the "new" songs for the 1988 Greatest Hits album.

Still, they picked "No Questions Asked" instead?  :distress:

Well, I'm sure you know that many people only buy FM records because of you know who. Better to put a sh*tty song on there by her, than a great song, by some guitar player.

So he got stiffed on that, and his co-credit on "Paper Doll" for GHs.

Sounds like he got a pretty raw deal all the way.

THat's interesting. I just assumed all of those tracks from that bootleg were from the BTM sessions. Of course, Homer got the reason right why they picked "No Questions Asked" instead.;)

IMO, "Paper Doll" would've been the better choice. (but, then, I don't have a clue what the song sounded like before Lindsey did whatever he did to it)

I like No Questions Asked, i don't care what anyone says ;)

But i agree that all Rick's songs are better than "Stand On The Rock" - I really can't stand this song.

The outtakes are good, but not BTM, im glad they changed it for the album

No, none for "Freedom". Most of the outtakes are Chris, Rick & Billy songs.

Thanks Macfan. Im reading on throwndown.net that there are a few more demos/outtakes that werent posted. i'd love to hear the demo for "As long as you follow" - is the demo for No Questions Asked that is on there the one where Stevie sings "No questions asked" at the very beginning?

I'll check my CDs later this evening, but I think I remember one of the outtakes of NQA did have her singing that at the beginning of the song. It sounds familiar to me. Would you like that one too? I'll try to post the outtake of "As Long As You Follow" tomorrow. I have dial-up, so it takes a bit longer to upload, but I should be able to do it tomorrow morning.:)

Hence why he quit in 1991

Which is sad, because from a technical perspective, Vito was the best guitarist the band ever had. Incidentally, to all of the other guitar players out there, did you see the write-up of Vito's new signature Reverand in a recent issue of Guitar Player?

I'd gotten that impression.

Sorry if it's old news, but what was the underlying issue? Did he just not click with Mick - or anyone else - the way Billy apparently did?

You can check in his Q&A..but I don't remember that he really wanted to get into the specifics of why he left...

Here you go. Here's "As Long As You Follow."

I tried to upload "No Questions Asked", but I kept getting this alert about entering a secure site. When I clicked on OK, then the page wouldn't load. Then later YouSendIt's website gave me a message about the server being too busy. I'll try to upload "No Questions Asked" later today or tomorrow.:)

Got to play one at the NAMM show in Anaheim last weekend (and talk to Rick for a while, too; while he was hawking is signature model at the Reverend Guitars booth...that's when I found out the scoop about "Got No Home").

While I like the Rick Vito Signature Reverend, A LOT, I think the Slingshot Custom Chrome Elite is more to my personal liking. (it has that third pickup and is a little more sonically versatile than the RV model). And, it's a couple of bucks cheaper. ;)

That version of "Walk Another Mile" sounds identical to the version on King Of Hearts...is anyone 100% positive that's a Fleetwood Mac recording and not Rick on his own?

"Last Chance To Rock" resurfaced on Rick's Bandbox Boogie album, reworked & retitled "Last Chance To Mambo".

I don't know. That's what is on my boot. Please let me know if it is the commercially released version so I can take it down.

I'll do a better comparison when I get home (I have to play stuff at such a low volume here at work, it is difficult to hear subtleties.)
