I have the source tape, straight from Ms. Gross herself. I bought her a sushi dinner in Hollywood. Brian J. burned it all to a CD for me. I'll post it here. Can you give me a day or two?

This is the one where John calls Chris a cow, although I've been told the back & forth between the McVies during this interview was really a joke between the 2 of them.

Sorry about Laura Gross being such a drag. I mean, she's about as interesting as the wet side of paint. She was no more interesting in person than she is on her tape recorder. "What keeps the precious part precious?" is about the extent of her intelligence.

Those bastards are talking all at once frequently, too, it's hard to catch some things.
Thank you! I was on needles and pinsas waiting for the rest.
Laura Gross seems nice, she's a little dull, I didn't think too bad. She is pretty good asking them about the process of writing songs.

MrsMcVie 07-21-2006 07:58 PM

Thanks David, you´re a STAR!! I´ve just downloaded this interview and I really love the fact that they let John get a word in for once! :D He´s so funny, and that voice.. WOW, don´t know what to say really.. SOO SEXY, I swear it gives me goose bumps!;) !

sparky 07-21-2006 09:36 PM

Thanks for the interview, David. I listened to the first three parts. But I don't know that I can withstand the rest ! She is a dreadful interviewer and every band member comes off as dreary and boring. Were they all on ludes ? Are the other parts any more entertaining ? Chris is the only one engaged at all. Though it is a shock to hear John speak.

well, spark, I hate to tell you but the rest of it is quite dull & pointless, although chris plays an ex tempore blues turnaround in C on a piano at the end while somebody (John I think) records a program identification tag.

So, Laura asks Stevie about how she writes a song, after Chris has just expounded fairly well on the same subject. I'm like "oh, boy! Here it comes, she's going to talk!" And she goes "I couldn't possibly explain that right now. I could go on for hours about it" and then "It's very heavy for me. Songwriting is the most heaviest thing I do"
Yep. That's it. Most heaviest thing I do.
I think they said a few interesting things, but they were all talking at once so we didn't hear it.

goldie 07-22-2006 06:14 AM

These are great, thanks David!!!

Christine says there is "no fanatical kind of vibe" from the audience ... fast forward to the SYW tour ......

Lindsey says he tries to make everyone's songs "unique" .... I love it. That is totally what he does.

Lindsey said "sex!" Lindsey said "sex!"

The interviewer needs some more journalism classes .... dear God!

There's another tape from Laura of her talking to Stevie & John for about an hour in 1987, after Tango. Whenever Stevie doesn't answer a question, John answers it!

MrsMcVie 07-23-2006 05:34 AM

Any chance of you (or someone else) putting that one up here? Pretty please?;)

Firstly thank you David for posting this. I am still listening to all the sections.

Does anyone know/have an opinion on whether John was being serious with his "shut up you cow" comment?

Personally if he was joking I didn't think it was funny and if he wasn't joking well it's no wonder she left him. Prat

When I first heard this interview, I thought he was dead serious. But, there were several people on the Ledge awhile back who said that both Chris & John were just fooling around. I don't know. Just after he said it, Chris reminds him that they're on the radio. He also complains that she's getting in on every conversation(they were doing an interview), then complains that it was her fault that he was drinking. Also, Lindsey tries to help by saying very curtly, "John". I still think it's possible he was serious. Calling your wife a "cow" is a strange way to joke around, in my opinion.

That's what I thought. It all sounded "serious" to me. And if he was joking I still don't think it's funny.

If that's what he was prepared to say in public then God alone knows what he was saying in private.

Aisling 07-23-2006 10:51 PM

thank you so much posting this!!! i had never heard it before. hmmm, there was something, uh, not organic about the questions laura gross asked. it seemd as if she had nothing to talk about from the beginning and was hoping that the band would just carry on their own discussion.

anyway, i also didn't find john's comments to be funny in the slightest, even if it was supposed to be a joke. when he said christine was the reason he kept drinking, that was just plain mean. i think she covered up well though. if it had been me, much yelling would have ensued.

That was her interview "style". She didn't ask very insightful questions & some of her questions were just downright silly. However, she did let them talk. I like the 2 interviews that she did with Chris & Lindsey. She just let them talk & the Mirage one especially is quite good. There's lots of interesting stuff, especially from Chris.

I think this little exchange was an obvious indication of where they were at marriage-wise-- kind of a tense place. I don't see how they could have been 'joking/fooling around'; LB's interjection and Stevie's nervous laughter sort of indicate that everyone felt a bit uncomfortable. But how many people have their not so flattering marital tiffs caught on tape to be heard by others forever? They'd probably be embarrassed if they heard that exchange today. But y'know...they were human. Part of FMac's appeal. ;)

It wasn't as they didn't know they were being recorded. Christine did say at one point "we're on the radio"

I think it highlights John's problems at the time.

I heard John described once as being very gentle when he was sober but a completely different person when he was drunk.

It must have been very difficult for her to have to put up with and as for his comment that she drove him him to it well John should have been ashamed of himself. (Actually I imagine he probably was)

Gail

HomerMcvie 07-24-2006 11:39 AM

To me, it SOUNDS like John's joking. But then Lindsey's "John" makes me think that maybe he wasn't. And, the "drive me to drink" remark, makes me think he'd probably had a few, and just wasn't holding anything back.

Can you imagine being in the same room constantly, with someone you've broken up with, and probably still have feelings for? I don't know how they did it.

David 07-24-2006 12:20 PM

I think they were all tired, having spent many weeks laying down the last tracks, & essentially joking around with the press reports that fall & winter about the problems within the band. The band was high profile that fall in newspapers because of the romantic breakups. The album was late, too. I doubt we're hearing an actual fight in the presence of an interviewer (who, by the way, addresses the atmosphere of this interview ten years later when she was talking to the band again). I think we're just hearing five tired rock stars who are looking forward to breaking for the holidays.

Exactly. Of course there are gonna be things said that maybe are not representative of your 'bigger self.' (Didn't Lindsey use that phrase once LOL? )

Yes, that was Richard Dashut on that VH1 Behind the Music thing. Also, Chris herself said pretty much the same thing in Rolling Stone. She described it as a Jekyll & Hyde type thing.

David 07-24-2006 03:52 PM

John, if you're around, listen to this MP3 & then tell us what you think.

I love Interviews-

Thanks for posting these David- I just enjoyed about 20 min of my old favorite band- Fleetwood Mac, and that is always a pleasure.!!

Perhaps the Interviewer was rather dull and the members were rather "burnt-out" but it was still fun to listen to everyone expound on silly questions and offer different methods of how they come about their writing and studio vs. live ideas... however, the genuine laughter between the 5 fireflies...is what made me smile...
In retrospect, it is like they, the band, realized that the realationships within the band were going to change...further on down the road. (The animosity that grew between S and L- the spite /overusage money/drugs/emotions
/alcohol/privledges/power/prestige/ etc....just ALL of it) ...

And, during this interview, I precieve that it was still a somehat innocent group, believing in their music and the "vibe" . Regardless of the interactions and fractions that were occuring at the same time.

Thanks again for sharing- Once again, you are awesome:xoxo:
