The Definitive Christine McVie Song Contest
Here's the list of Christine McVie's songs (124 songs!) from her Chicken Shack, Solo, and Fleetwood Mac albums. Remember the idea is to condense Christine's entire catalog down to the definitive 18 songs. Please look over this list and let me know if a song(s) needs to be added/removed. Any ideas/complaints/questions let me know!

Maybe 'Can't Help Falling In Love' (from A Fine Mess soundtrack (1986) ) and 'Roll With Me, Henry' (from Rock, Rhythm, and Blues (1989) ) should be included. (?) She didn't write either song, but some fans may want them included, just for the sake of completeness.

Even though she didn't write "I'd Rather Go Blind" it is still on her solo album, I think it should count also. |
I see bootlegs and demos are not included... so I can't vote for Christine's version of Gypsy :laugh:
Just kidding. |
I know right!
I thought it best to exclude demo's as that can get into a murky area. |
How about also including "Gone Into the Sun" and the other songs of hers from the Madison Blues compilation?
I think a good rule for inclusion would be: any studio or live recording appearing on an official release, on which she is the lead singer (or co-lead singer). It shouldn't matter if it was recorded by Fleetwood Mac, Chicken Shack, Christine solo, or another artist. |

Madison Blues is a three-disk box set released in 2003 of recordings from the post-Peter Green transitional period. It starts off with a set of four songs by Christine with the band with whom she recorded her solo record. The four songs are "Hey Baby," "It's You I Miss," "Gone Into the Sun," and "Tell Me You Need Me." Any list of all of Christine's songs should have those. (I personally think "Gone Into the Sun" is a great, great song.)
Much of the rest of the compilation consists of live recordings, some of which feature vocals by Christine. Some of the live songs she sings also appear as studio recordings, but there is one live song ("Lonely Without You") that to my knowledge isn't on any of her studio recordings, so I'd include that on a definitive list, too. Here is some info on the comp: http://discog.fleetwoodmac.net/discog.php?pid=403. By the way, the compilation also includes that fabulous "lost" song by Danny Kirwan, "Purple Dancer." |
Another song to add to the list is "Come Out To Play," the unreleased track from In the Meantime.

I'll add these songs - Hey Baby; It's You I Miss; Gone Into the Sun; Tell Me You Need Me; Lonely Without You - in a poll by themselves titled Madison Blues, after her Chicken Shack songs and before the Christine Perfect album. I'll add "Come Out to Play" to the In the Meantime poll. Anything else Ledgies, let me know! |
I think it's a fantastic list. Thanks for posting this. I better get to work.
|
I'll get the first poll for Christine's Chicken Shack songs tonight. Please read the first post in this thread for contest rules/regulations. I hope we get a lot of Ledgie turn out for this contest. I don't think this forum gets noticed much.
 |
Still need to name what this collection shall be called.
Over and Over, So Excited, and Just Perfect have all been suggested by Ledgies so far. I've been calling it "The Definitive Christine McVie Collection". |
Just Perfect: The Definitive Christine McVie Collection is the official name of this contest and the 18 songs that will arise over the next months.

Should we credit "Keep on Going" from Mystery to Me to Christine? I know Welch wrote it, but Christine does lead vocals on it. We have included a few songs sung my Christine but written by others. |

"any studio or live recording appearing on an official release, on which she is the lead singer (or co-lead singer). It shouldn't matter if it was recorded by Fleetwood Mac, Chicken Shack, Christine solo, or another artist." "Keep On Going" belongs in this contest just as much as "I'd Rather Go Blind." |
Another non-Mac song that Christine does the lead vocal on is "Coventry Carol."
http://www.last.fm/music/Christine+M...Coventry+Carol It came out in 1998 so maybe you could put it in with Time/The Dance. |

Thanks jbrownsjr and nicepace. We'll add "Keep on Going" to the Mystery to Me/Heroes poll and "Coventry Carol" to the Time/Dance poll for the contest.
For some reason I can't edit my first post on this thread, so I'll update via a new post/reply. |

As I go along with the voting in the contest, I am thinking the term "Christine's BEST songs" is misleading. I really think we should be voting for the songs that we think should advance in the contest. That's different. F0r example, I might not think "I'd Rather Go Blind" is her BEST song from her 1969 solo record, but it's the one that needs to advance, if our goal here is to compile a "Definitive Christine McVie Collection."
If everybody just votes for the songs they like the best we run the risk of ending up with 18 songs from the "Rumours" lineup (or maybe 17 "Rumours" lineup songs plus "Why"). And that would not be a "Definitive Christine McVie Collection" by any stretch of the imagination. I hope as the contest goes along, people will lobby for songs to advance and try to convince people to vote for them, as opposed to just voting. Let's make this interesting, people, not just another 2-second mindless "like" on the internet. |
I definitely agree with you nicepace, part of the reasoning I've been saying "Best" instead of "Favorite". As you said, we want everybody to vote for the songs that are Christine's best songs AND deserve to be on a 18 song CD, representing Christine's definitive songs. Perhaps "Best" can be confusing. Perhaps phrasing it as "Pick Christine's definitive songs from each album/poll".
I made them all multiple choice so that I not making a restriction on how many from each album/poll continue, except for the 50% miminum overall vote. One album/poll might have three songs that Ledgies vote as best/definitive while another album/poll might just get one or even none. I look at a song like "Don't Stop" that is very disliked by Ledgie's as evidenced in the least favorite contest from 2011. However it is one of Christine's definitive songs and should be included in the 18 songs. I wouldn't want Ledgies to not vote for it because they don't "Like" it or they are tired of hearing it so much. Of course it will be narrowed down to 18 songs, so a lot of songs will be excluded - that's what is gonna be interesting when we get to Round 2 in a month or so. Sidetracking, but with Lindsey I don't like Big Love and Tusk, but they are two of Lindsey's definitive songs - I can't stand to listen to them, but that's not the point! I will vote for them when the time comes. So yeah I agree with you nicepace. Everybody should vote for what you feel are Christine's definitive songs from her entire catalog. |

You may also want to consider her guest vocal on the song "Can't Feel the Pain" by Brent Bourgeois (Eponymous), 1990.

There seems to be a bootleg type of set of 3 CDs titled All Things Christine making the rounds. It even has some Chicken Shack. I had no interest in it as I had it all on official releases. I don't think they're selling it but it had a CD tray and front and back cover to a booklet. Didn't even have the obscure tracks like Come Out To Play or Gone Into The Sun (which is on the Complete Blue Horizon thing).
I thought Come Out And Play dated from the 1984 solo album but can't seem to find that info now if it was. |

Contest Update!!
Well Ledgies we are approaching the end of Round 1 of the definitive Christine contest. Currently 21 songs officially move on in the contest. We have two polls active for the Behind the Mask era and Time. I'll post the last polls for In the Meantime Friday and Saturday.
Since we most likely will end Round 1 with around 28 songs, I'm considering another poll(s) using the songs that got at least 40% votes. With two polls currently open, here are the songs that got 40%.....Tango didn't have any 40% songs and Behind the Mask, Time, and In the Meantime don't count yet.
So perhaps two "extra" polls for these songs? Or just go with what we've been doing? Remember the idea is to arrive at a CD's worth of songs, i.e. Christine's definitve 18 songs. Let me know what you guys think! |

I agree with two polls too. Those are some great tunes up there.
|
Thanks, jbrownsjr and applebucked. I think I'll just do one poll with the top 10 runners-up instead of two polls.
Check post #33 for the 25 songs confirmed to move forward in the "Just Perfect: The Christine McVie Collection" contest. |
29 songs officially move forward in the contest!

Major Update! The top 10 underachievers, the top 29 definitive - so far!

This will be these songs last chance of moving onto Round 2. Below that is the top 29 songs, percentage each received, and my plans for Round 2. Possible winners from tomorrow's poll would be mixed into these polls. Any questions or comments, please let me know!
