Okay folks, let's hear some opinions.
What do you think about the Dixie Chicks version of "Landslide"?
Personally, the song is awesome but the Chicks just didn't do it justice.

It's good.
Stevie's is better.
Hey, as long as she's making money from it...

I like their version. I think its soft and melodic. I of COURSE love Stevie's version 100%, but the DC did good. It could have been so much worse, like a blue grass hillbilly cry in your beer version. Sorry country lovers...lol

There are certain songs that should never be covered.
But between the Smashing Pumpkins' version and the Dixie Chicks', I definitely prefer the former. I think the Chicks are extremely overrated.

I think the Chicks did a fine job. They made it country. I don't love it, but it's respectable. The Smashing Pumpkins cover...oh boy. Not for me. That guy's voice could curdle milk. But I'm glad they did it. The more people who know about SN's writing abilities, the better.

Nice replies, but I still stand by my opinion. DC did alright, but Stevies rendition will always be no.1
Can you picture this? The Dixie Chicks doing "Edge of Seventeen"?
Now, I have a question. Remember the song "Turning Music into Gold"? The name might not be right, but she did it with a Country Western singer. Who was he? Glenn Campbell? Charlie Rich? I'm not even sure if I got the title right.

Lol. That would be s sight to see.
I think the idea of making the song coutry, and all acoustic like that was great, but I didn't like the way they sung it. That twang in their voices just throws it off... way way way off.
You know that sound when you are trying to tune a really flat guitar? I hate that sound...

The song you are referring to is called "Gold" and was released on John Stewarts album "Bombs Away Dream Babies". It can also be found on Stevie's "Enchanted" box set.:wavey:

It was John Stewart. He was in the Kingston Trio. They are considered folk. Their bio is on The Penguin as is their q&a.
As for Landslide, nothing tops Stevie but the DC did it some justice. As for Billy Corgan singing it, well maybe he should have tried Edge of Seventeen.

I really like it. Obviously not as good as Stevie doing it, but I like they way they turned it country. I really like the album Home too.

I like it.
I think it was toned down somewhat, really simple. I like Sheryl Crow's remix a little better--had some more guitar work, a little bit of percussion.
I also however, agree with what Lindsey said in an interview--something like he thought it was too country and it's a little awkward to have a country group cover a song by a legendary rock band, and completely tone it down. However, I think it was done in good taste, and simple. And musically, Landslide is simple and beautiful and I think that comes across.

I enjoyed it the first 20947883 times I heard it on the radio, but am now SICK to death of it....but I'm not saying it's bad...they did it justice...I just am not a big fan of covers of anyone's work...
As for Billy Corgan...I STILL haven't hear that version...didn't Tori Amos also do a cover of Landslide though?

Yes, Tori did do a cover of Landslide. You could get it off of Napster.com before it went defunct.

I really don't like it. I've tried to get accustomed to it, but I find the voices grind me down on this one.:(

I can't stand it. Nothing beats the Stevie version.

Since nobody really like the idea of DC doing a cover of "Landslide" how 'bout The Red Hot Chili Peppers doing it?
I can just picture Anthony Keidis shouting "I turned...'round and the waters......" Nevermind. I believe that was "Crystal" I was thinking about.

Me no likey, but then again a lot of that has to do with the fact that I can't get into Natalie Maines' voice. Not only is Stevie's voice velvety smooth on that song, it's also very simply put together which makes it beautiful. The more instrumentation you put on that song the more it loses its appeal. Just my $.02...

I like the DC cover but admit it was vanilla comapred to the flavored original and Dance version (which was stellar). Also, I think NM sounds like a young SN, esp. on TFFT.

First, gotta say I love the DC and their version of Landslide--I think the harmony they do on it really makes the song soar. No way they could beat any of Stevie's versions, but it did the song justice. And I personally thought the VH1 Live version with The Chicks and Stevie was amazing--I almost had a heart attack from joy.
Second, Tori Amos's version is okay--it sounds pretty cool with piano--but there is one thing that REALLY bugs me. When she sings "Can I handle the seasons of my life," she draws the "of" out ridiculously long, and pronounces the "o" long, as in "moo", and it just sounds really really stupid and pretentious. Arrgh. You can get a live version on Kazaa--does this bug anyone else as much as it bugs me.
Also, I love the 1981 Live version, even though Stevie's voice disappears so much during it. I love her second "I don't know" in that one...mmmm, the beauty.

Maybe it's because I'm from the south, but the DC version doesn't sound twangy to me- they sound LESS twangy than most other groups, IMO. Not that the short one went to school at Berklee College of Music or anything, the lucky swine. Anyway. I like the music to it, but I wish it was Stevie singing. I agree with whoever said it got played too much on the radio- it was overkill.
The Smashing Pumpkins version sucks ass. I like SP, but they should have picked a different song.
The Tori Amos version sucks ass. I have an intense dislike for TA- you just don't understand. She could make ANY song sound bad.

Stevie's version without a doubt!!!
I don't like country music...I don't like the Dixie Chicks...so that's a big NO...Billy Corgan's version with the Pumpkins gets on my nerves too, but I think it's cool that Stevie's music reached the "alternative" masses...I haven't heard Tori Amos' version so I can't weigh in on that...
However, I will say that it's not the worst remake of a song ever...that goes to Madonna covering "American Pie."

Landslide has always been one of my favorites songs.
As far as the DC version....I cringe everytime I hear it and worse everytime I see the video.

I found it interesting that Lindsey was quoted recently (can't remember where) saying that while he's happy for Stevie and the renewed interest / new appreciation in "Landslide", he's not a big fan of remakes of other people's work. Yet the leadoff song on the bonus SYW disc is the Dylan cover. The old LB double-standard at work, I guess.

I didn't mind the DC version until I heard Landslide live, now I can't ever picture anyone else singing that song besides Stevie, so for me Stevies version was always the best, but before I saw it live I had trouble for the first few notes of telling which version I was listening to, now not only do I not have that problem, but everytime I hear the DC version I cring when the other two girls voices come in b/c the song will always be a Stevie song for me. Oh what one live performance can do for a song.

The Dixie's version is WAY too overproduced....
If you've heard Billy Corgan's (Smashing Pumpkins maestro) version, you will have heard the worst karaoke version of "Landslide" ever in the history of music.....
It's really, really bad......
Nothing compares to Stevie in early 1975 sitting down with Lindsey and recording the true version of the song. Why would anyone wanna **** with that, anyway???
