Just wanted to let you guys know that I contacted The Guiness Book of Records on their website, in regards to "Planets of the Universe". The song might have made Stevie "The Oldest Woman Ever To Have A #1 Single". I'm sure I will get contacted within the next 2 weeks about it......cross your fingers!!!!!!

~Alex

PS. The record was owned by Cher for "Believe" then Blondie (Deborah Harry) for "Maria".....

You know, that never even occurred to me... that would be so cool! Although I have to admit that I don't mind if Debbie keeps the record either... hehehe.

Debbie doesn't hold it. Cher does for Believe. The thing is, Believe was a #1 hit on the Billboard Hot 100. Planets was only #1 on the dance charts...so I don't know if that can be determined as a technicality -- hopefully it can.

According to my Guiness Book of World Records 99 or 00, I'm not too sure which one, it says Debbie Harry's single 'Maria' off of her album 'No Exit' hit #1 when Debbie was 53 and a few months....Cher was 52 when she had 'Believe' hit #1....The problem is, 'Maria' hit #1 on the UK charts...not U.S......First, we have to see if it counts to hit #1 on the DANCE charts...then we have to see if Stevie was older then Debbie when the single hit #1...I'll do some research on the dates...I'll come back in 20 minutes....

I Found this on Debbie's site:
"In 1997 the four original members of Blondie (Debbie Harry, Jimmy Destri, Chris Stein & Clem Burke), reunited to cut some demos with ex-producer Mike Chapman, including the song "Studio 54". In 1998 they would team up with the producer of the debut "Blondie" album, Craig Leon to produce a new album, "No Exit". November and December would be spent touring, Europe, England and Australia. "No Exit" was released in February of "1999" and would go to top ten in England and top twenty in America. The first single from the album "Maria" would debut at number one on the English charts."

That means that since Debbie was born July 1st, 1945, 'Maria' hit #1 when she was 53 and 7 months....Stevie was 53 and 2months, and 7 days when 'POTU' hit # 1 ...........OMG!!!! TOMORROW IS THE 1 YEAR ANNIVERSARY OF THAT!!!LOL! OH, AND ITS ALSO MY B-DAY!!!! ;)

Oh, well, no record...

Oh ho ho, but wait just one second there.

If I'm reading this right, then Debbie Harry does not hold the record. It wasn't Debbie Harry who released Maria, it was Blondie, a band. I don't know if that makes any difference...I think it would. Regardless of whether the lead singer was male or female, this song would have gone into a "group" category. So, I think there still might be hope.

Darnit, I wish I would have bought that edition of Guiness!!!! Anyway, I'm 70% sure Debbie holds the record, b/c in the book there was a pic of her from the video "Heart of Glass", but I could be wrong....BTW, They have not answered me back yet..:(
