I'm deliberately not watching these videos because I'm waiting to see the band next month, but man, those pictures look incredible and so close! Thanks for posting them.

Appreciate you for sharing this video. I love how Mike plays this, Neil does some Stevie twirls, and the crowd is loving the song. I have to say I am impressed with how the band is sounding.

I'm simply copying from youtube and pasting it here. Wasn't it cute and funny when Neil kicked something off the drum riser and it hit and bounced off of Stevie?

Why hasn’t anyone filmed “Isn’t It Midnight” yet??

Yep - I think it was a water bottle. Seems like the band is having fun!

I tossed a couple of clips up on Twitter and it appears I was sitting in a similar seat if not closer but on the other side of whoever posted the GYOW video above. I will warn anyone who doesn’t want to hear criticisms not to check my Twitter lol. But my screenname is Tzipity. I have a lot more and haven’t decided where to upload yet (had some issues with Twitter and haven’t even listened to what I posted to comment on quality). Any recommendations for easiest way to share? I think I only got the full song on Storms (with the caveat the people behind me were talking loudly during the end) and the closing song. But took a lot of partials. A few are on a much nicer camera I snuck into the venue too.

Anyway, I would be happy to share what I can. I had a snafu during the last tour at Rosemont where I misplaced my camera and was so happy for a fellow Ledgies photos and such. So very willing to pay it forward in that regard. Probably not the best clips but I had a great seat.

I have a clip or two! Dang it. That’s as the highlight of the show for me and I was hoping someone else grabbed it because I was too happy and into it to do justice of trying to record. But it was wonderful, in my opinion. Christine was by far the highlight of the show for me. And I LOVE IIM!!!

Wow. Really great performance of Neil's Split Enz classic "I Got You". So cool to see how happy and energized Neil is and hear how much Stevie loves the song. Thanks for posting!

Thanks for posting!
Two observations from this and other clips:
Mike is a cool guitar player...….really adding a lot to the band!
Look at John: he is watching Mike, Neil( and Mick) as they play, almost as if he is getting used to their style of playing(which ,of course he is!) ....a total pro!

Exactly the answer I was expecting from you but was HOPING for a different response.
It isn't a contest at all. But anytime I see that I posted the same thing another member already posted, I delete mine. It's just a common courtesy.

I thought I Got You was awesome. This is the first time I've seen a full clip of Black Magic Woman and Hypnotized, both great. I loved he way everyone was singing to Don't Dream It's Over. Now if someone would just post some of Chris's songs...

Waiting on Isn't It Midnight and All Over Again to come through... her voice definitely sounds a little weak, but considering her age that is to be expected. It's definitely not displeasing to the ear though! Love her to death and glad she's still trucking :D

I think Stevie sounds pretty good on this song, and I think it’s because it’s new....to her, new for her to get into. Something to use her voice a bit...I know she doesn’t have a great voice anymore, but she sounds okay...

So imagine if she had gone ahead with Fmac into the studio and recorded new Fmac music..

I’m not sure I know how to link this properly but was asked if I had “All Over Again” And I do, actually got the full song zoomed in with my digital camera I snuck in. Unfortunately I have computer problems so am not sure when/how to get my camera recordings uploaded. But here’s a 1 min clip I took with my phone while also juggling the camera and hence the lack of zoom.

https://twitter.com/tzipity/status/1048998353030266880?s=21

Edit- Can someone tell me what the code is to get this to show up without making you click to Twitter?

Thanks for posting!
Two observations from this and other clips:
Mike is a cool guitar player...….really adding a lot to the band!
Look at John: he is watching Mike, Neil( and Mick) as they play, almost as if he is getting used to their style of playing(which ,of course he is!) ....a total pro!

I think John is definitely the anchor. He sounds amazing.

Fleetwood Mac Showcase New Lineup And Revisit Their Earliest Days On Stage In Chicago

While the band, who has sold in excess of 100 million records, certainly experienced their greatest commercial success following the addition of members Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks in 1975, the group itself actually formed in the late 60s as a British blues quartet which would bear virtually no resemblance to the group that churned out pop hits like "Little Lies" during the 80s en route to enshrinement in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Beginning in 1967, the group featured founder Peter Green on guitar, Mick Fleetwood on drums, Jeremy Spencer on guitar and John McVie on bass. Over the course of the next seven years, artists like Christine McVie, Danny Kirwan, Bob Welch and Bob Weston would come and go as Green and Spencer departed.

1975 began with the addition of Buckingham and Nicks, then an off and on item, and Lindsey would take his first sabbatical in 1987. Christine and John McVie married and divorced and Christine left the band multiple times, rejoining most recently in 2014.

All of which is to say that maybe it shouldn't have come as quite the shock it did when Lindsey Buckingham, amidst much acrimony, departed Fleetwood Mac again earlier this year.

While that departure has riled up fans looking to place blame, what matters as the band embarks upon a North American tour is that Mick Fleetwood made perfect picks to replace him.

As Tom Petty's erstwhile sideman through projects like Mudcrutch and The Heartbreakers since 1971, Mike Campbell became one of rock's most underrated guitar players. Always able to make a song better, Campbell rarely looks to steal the spotlight with a flashy solo (though, as he showed on stage last night in Chicago, he's more than capable of doing that too).

New Zealand born singer and songwriter Neil Finn fronted rockers Split Enz in the late 70s and early 80s before moving on to even greater success as the voice of new wave rockers Crowded House in 1985.

"Welcome, Chicago!" said Stevie Nicks to open the show. "Here we are for our second show in one of my very favorite cities!"

Fleetwood Mac performed as a twelve-piece act Saturday night in Chicago with Mick Fleetwood, John and Christine McVie, Stevie Nicks, Mike Campbell and Neil Finn augmented by additional guitar and keyboard players, a second percussionist and three background vocalists.

The group's stage on this tour is very simple, free of the technological trappings that accompany most arena rock shows, with the group performing in front of a single video screen.

From their 1977 classic Rumours, "The Chain" opened Saturday night's show. As has generally been the case on recent Fleetwood Mac tours, their biggest album received the most focus, with seven tracks from it in the setlist so far on this tour.

That performance put the spotlight on Neil Finn early, who nailed his solo on the track. He'd go on to provide stellar vocals and guitar throughout the evening.

Finn is the flashier of the new additions. Now the youngest member of Fleetwood Mac at 60, he spun and bounced across the stage throughout the show. Mike Campbell, on the other hand, seemed perfectly content to hide in the shadows despite the stature and quality of his lead guitar playing.

"Many, many years ago I heard this song and it opened a lot of doors in my own heart," said Mick Fleetwood, introducing an acoustic cover of Crowded House's biggest hit "Don't Dream It's Over." "It's unbelievably fitting," he continued referencing Finn's new place in the band as Stevie Nicks joined him on vocals, singing one verse of the 1986 hit.

The group went out of its way to introduce their new members, putting a Fleetwood Mac spin on "I Got You" by Split Enz early and the Tom Petty classic "Free Fallin" later. Nicks once again took on the vocal of her longtime friend and collaborator and Campbell's familiar strumming of the Rickenbacker on it was a comforting reminder of his past.

"During this set, we're going to pay respect to our history," said Nicks Saturday on stage at Chicago's United Center. "We have reached back in the history of Fleetwood Mac which is really exciting because it's a whole different thing," she continued, referencing the group's often overlooked roots in the U.K. blues tradition.

Aside from the absence of Lindsey Buckingham, the most stunning part of the current tour is the desire the group has to dig into their vast catalog for tracks that predate the involvement of Nicks and even Christine McVie.

"Listen, I'm personally really happy to be here with this band," said Campbell. "This song is written by Peter Green. Hopefully you know who he is by now," he continued, eyes locked on Fleetwood, both smiling, as a stripped down Fleetwood Mac consisting of just six players took on, arguably, the group's biggest early hit in "Oh Well."

Nicks and McVie left the stage and blues guitar drove the gritty jam as Campbell delivered not just rollicking lead licks but lead vocals too on iconic lines like, "I can't help about the shape I'm in / Can't sing, I ain't pretty and my legs are thin / But don't ask me what I think of you / I might not give the answer that you want me to."

Tracks like "Tell Me All the Things You Do" and "Hypnotized" were performed Saturday night in Chicago for just the second time since 1977. And what's incredible is the group's ability to balance those deeper dives by following them up with more pop leaning Fleetwood Mac hits like "Everywhere, "Rhinannon" or "Dreams" and making all of it work.

Nicks took the lead vocal on "Black Magic Woman," a song made popular by Carlos Santana in 1970, though it was penned by Peter Green and released by a very different Fleetwood Mac in 1968.

It was on "Black Magic Woman" where Campbell started to look comfortable. His guitar work on the track provided the type of moments fans didn't often hear on Tom Petty records. Campbell made his way across the stage during the track to interact with Christine McVie on keyboards. Mick Fleetwood stood up from his drum kit as the song came to a close, grinning ear to ear as he pointed a drumstick directly at Campbell.

That moment was one of many which revealed just how much fun the members of Fleetwood Mac seem to be having at the moment, not necessarily a given during past Fleetwood Mac outings.

Despite his absence, the group made no effort to shy away from Fleetwood Mac fare that's closely associated with Lindsey Buckingham. Finn handled the lead vocal capably on "Second Hand News" early in the set, teaming up with Campbell later for the guitar heroics that characterize "Go Your Own Way."

These are polarizing times for Fleetwood Mac fans, as evidenced by fan reaction on social media to Lindsey's departure, the current tour and newly updated setlist. On one hand, fans who approach the group nostalgically miss the guitarist, while others are happy for a fresh take on vital songs the group ignored for decades.

One thing that can't be argued is that the addition of Campbell and Finn seem to have injected new life into Fleetwood Mac. While it remains to be seen if that carries over to the studio, fans who can approach this lineup with an open mind will be vastly rewarded in the live concert setting.

While it's strange to see Fleetwood Mac covering, say, Crowded House, it's rewarding to see a band willing to shake things up and try something different this far in, even if that means ignoring the nostalgia for a change.

Oh man as both a Fleetwood Mac (all eras) and Crowded House fan, hearing this combination of songs brings a tear to my eye. Landslide and Say You Love Me sound closer to their studio originals than they ever did live - never knew Neil could play banjo! I thought Neale Heywoode would be wasted on this tour as third guitarist but blow me he nailed that solo on Landslide. Why they cheated in the BTM era and got Chris to play the solo instead of Rick is anybody's guess.

One gripe - I really don't think Stevie sounds good on Neil's songs. His personality and hers are like chalk and cheese (where as with LB I guess they just had all the wrong things in common).

So we finally got a little piece of this. Cool. So Chris is out front and center with Stevie. Is she sitting down? Sounds pretty good and I like that closing the show. Needs a little more rehearsing though. Girls not quite on the same page here. Chris sounds good, Stevie seems to be over singing a little maybe. Not bad though.

On another note I went to record the iHeart show and was told by my Directv box that I don't subscribe to that channel. Um... I subscribe to all the channels. I'm starting to feel c+ck blocked by you and this show Fleetwood Mac.

Well the one song I was thrilled they put in the set but disappointed with how it actually sounded in Tulsa at least was Isn’t it Midnight. Well it did a 180 in Chicago and sounds incredible. Maybe it’s Chris and the band, or maybe it’s something as simple as the sound quality of the different videos, but I’m thrilled not just that they’re “doing” Isn’t it Midnight but they sound amazing on it.

I'm simply copying from youtube and pasting it here. Wasn't it cute and funny when Neil kicked something off the drum riser and it hit and bounced off of Stevie?

I saw that on Facebook where someone posted it, and burst out laughing. Then replayed it about 20 times.

It was a water bottle. And it looked like he purposely did it, although I doubt he did. She looks at the bottle and him like, "What the hell?" Omg, it was truly funny.:laugh:

I understand if Christine is sick of doing Songbird but I don't think this song is really good enough to be a closer. It's not bad but it's not really great either and it doesn't have the emotional effect of Songbird or Say Goodbye. I think something like Wish You Were Here, Why, or Never Forget (all of which are great album closers) would work much better.

Ohhh I have a better video myself!!! I took it on an actual camera I sort of snuck in (actually I assume it was okay at United Center. I did get in trouble at another concert recently but uh... I have medical equipment and it allows me to stash my camera out of sight haha). I was in a great row of people at this show too. All first timers who were so excited to be there and so friendly so I didn’t pull out my big camera until later because there was so much dancing around me. But I got a close up full HD video of All Over Again for sure.

And I’m so excited to be able to share with everyone. That said, I don’t have a working computer at the moment and am still physically beat from the concert plus health issues but dang it, anyone who wants the video let me know. I already have someone I promised it to on Twitter.

And ha, the camera in question has a huge memory card and two shows from the last tour on it so if I ever get a chance to upload stuff... I have treats!!! I’m so ticked that while my phone surprised me some amazing video I originally recorded a bunch through Snapchat for a couple of personal friends and didn’t realize how awful Snapchat is with video. So my stuff is three different quality levels. Oops. Lesson learned. If my health were better and I had a car I would love to go to Grand Rapids. Bonding with fans yesterday and today even people who have similarly mixed feelings to me, and getting to share videos and thoughts has been maybe the best part of all. And I’m just paying it forward for a previous Ledgie who gave me permission to keep and print their photos several years ago when I forgot my camera at another show. I may love the fan community as much as the band itself right now.

Clip from “Isn’t It Midnight”. My personal highlight of the show. I am dying for a full recording but it was my high and I was too busy enjoying and was surprised to find I got this much of it. Doesn’t Christine sound great? You can tell she’s actually singing and certainly her voice has changed but as someone commented on Twitter, sounded like an 80s show. And compared to how she sounded a little over a year ago on the Buckingham McVie date I saw, I am just in awe. She really was the highlight. And this was my first time sitting on her side so as conflicted as I still feel- I am so thrilled I got to enjoy Christine and this show elevated my appreciation and admiration of her.

Still going through what I’ve got but I’ve been posted whatever people have asked for. If there’s anything you’re wanting to see, let me know. I only recorded the full song on a couple of songs (All Over Again and Storms for sure) because my row was standing and dancing most of the show and it was a little tight but I grabbed a minute or two of most songs and am quite happy with how my phone did.

Chris sounds great for her lately, but the backing vocals are pretty meh. You'd think at least either Sharon or Marilyn could hit the higher notes. Otherwise it makes the chorus sound really flat on an otherwise good performance.

One of the reviews mentioned the show having THREE back-up singers. I am wondering if that was a mistake, or if maybe they are referring to one of the auxillary musicians singing as well.

To my ear, Chris sounds pretty solid here on YMLF. Did they lower it from how it was performed last FM tour or during BuckVie? I hope Chris can hear the arena singing along with her... that was the best part, tbh.

I was completely surprised that we got this forum.

It was a nice surprise and you and I can take the credit for the Mods realizing it was needed. Now there needs to be no more discussions about which thread to put the current lineup into. I have a great idea. Since you and I (and who knows else will come along too), want to be the ones to create the video threads for the tour, why don't we take turns. You start the next one after the show on the 10th and then we can alternate, and I'll start the thread on the show after that and so on and so forth. What do you think?

Thx to you and gldswmn for getting this forum started.

My sig other (it feels stupid to say boyfriend when you're not 20) surprised me with a ticket for the Chicago show. I'm pretty bummed about Lindsey and I had no intention of going to this show. He sprung the ticket on me Friday and I just sat there. Imagine my shock when he proceeded to use my arguments against me! Here's a sample: What if this is the last tour, what is someone dies, what if this or that, you'll regret not going to see it for yourself, youtube videos are not the same as being there, if you change your mind you'll have to drive to a show further away, etc. He was adamant that I experience it for myself. He said I was making a mistake by not seeing this version of the band I've loved all my life. He was all serious and doing the "I know you/I know how you are" thing so I went. I'll post my review right after this

My seat was on the R side Sec 120, Row 8, Seat 1. It felt weird not being on the floor up close where I'd normally be. I couldn't see some of the screen stuff very well and never saw John till the end when he moved out of his spot. I'm not sure how to describe the show--it was very emotional for me. I don't mind being angry, depressed, happy but all 3 at the same time was too much. Ultimately he was right----I feel satisfied that I experienced it live and and I'll never wonder about it.

Christine sounded uneven to me all night. She looked like she was enjoying herself esp on "Tell Me", she was smiling, bouncing up and down. It sounded like Stevie shouted a lot to me. She doesn't have much nuance in her voice anymore. I didn't hear Sharon and Marilyn much and I was on their side. Mike did a good job esp on the pre 1975 songs. Neil did a good job too--I don't think he's phoning it in at all--he seems to be making an effort to sing the songs well and in a way we're used to hearing. John sounded great as always esp during Hypnotized.

I dunno--maybe I'll say more about it tonight when I'm at work and I have some quiet time. It's just that small things that I love were missing. When Lindsey yelps "yea" during the chorus of YMLF or the stuff he plays during GDW. I wanted to hear Isn't it Midnight with his vocals not Neil's. GYOW sounds very hard rock to me live but not during this show.

Whenever a pre FM5 song would start up I got excited cause I want to hear those songs live just not like this.

I haven't posted or read much here lately because I've been consumed with work issues. When I got the ticket on Friday I had to skim thru as much as I could to catch up. The Tulsa show could have been better so I think they wanted to bring it big time to Chicago. The United Center looked filled to me and I saw/heard lots of happy people around me and on my way out afterwards. Mike Campbell got a huge cheer when he was introduced as did Neil Finn. That surprised me a little (the Neil cheer) and when he started Don't Dream the audience cranked up on the first Hey Now. I expected a sing along but I thought it would take longer for the audience to chime in--I was wrong. Heard many positive comments about Freefallin and the tribute to Tom Petty. Even with the older songs most people stuck around. I think that's because Oh Well and Tell me are fast paced. Storms sounded good and I enjoyed the duet with Chris and Stevie at the end.

Neil Finn and Mike Campbell work hard to replace the magic of Lindsey Buckingham

Return of the Mac? Earlier this year, longtime singer, guitarist, and principal songwriter Lindsey Buckingham was fired from Fleetwood Mac — or rather “let go,” if we want to be cordial. “Words like ‘fired’ are ugly references as far as I’m concerned,” drummer Mick Fleetwood told Rolling Stone of the departure. “Not to hedge around, but we arrived at the impasse of hitting a brick wall.”

In the same interview, singer, songwriter, and tambourine maestro Stevie Nicks cleared things up, saying: “We were supposed to go into rehearsal in June and he wanted to put it off until November [2019]. That’s a long time. I just did 70 shows [on a solo tour]. As soon as I finish one thing, I dive back into another. Why would we stop? We don’t want to stop playing music. We don’t have anything else to do. This is what we do.”

And so, the official story is that Buckingham wanted to chill, they wanted to go, but then you hear Buckingham’s side of the story: “I think what you would say is that there were factions within the band that had lost their perspective. The point is that they’d lost their perspective. What that did was to harm – and this is the only thing I’m really sad about, the rest of it becomes an opportunity – it harmed the 43-year legacy that we had worked so hard to build, and that legacy was really about rising above difficulties in order to fulfill one’s higher truth and one’s higher destiny.”

In other words, nothing has changed over the last 40 years with these folks.

It Takes Two: Well, that’s not exactly true. Some things have changed, particularly the addition of Crowded House frontman Neil Finn and former Heartbreakers guitarist Mike Campbell, who both get the rewarding journey of trying to make everyone forget about Buckingham. Not surprisingly, the rest of the band turned a cold shoulder on their old friend, partner, and lover, leaning curiously heavy on their salad days, as if to say, “Look, this band’s always been more than Lindsey,” which, look, they’re not wrong, but it also seems a tad convenient.

But convenience has been king in this situation for the band, as Fleetwood cheekily told Billboard: “It’s ironic that we have a 50-year package coming out with all the old blues stuff with Peter Green, all the incarnations of Fleetwood Mac, which was not of course planned. But that’s what we’re feeling, especially myself and [bassist] John [McVie], having been in Fleetwood Mac for 55 years. So it’s exciting, totally challenging in the whole creative part of it, and we’re really loving it.” It’s a nice coincidence that works wonders for the outfit right now.

Still, the addition of Finn and Campbell only stresses the impossibility of replacing Buckingham, seeing how it took two musicians to swap out one. Granted, Finn gets the job done (especially on the harmonies for hits like “The Chain” or “Go Your Own Way”), and you even get to hear him duet his band’s biggest hit (“Don’t Dream It’s Over”) with Nicks, but it’s impossible to buy any of the band’s theatricality, which has always been one of their on-stage trademarks. Even when they were phoning it in, you at least knew there was a history there.

Perhaps that’s why Campbell is the easiest new face to consider. Given his ties with the band, the legendary Heartbreaker actually makes sense, and there’s at least some narrative to be felt — even outside of the Mac. After all, here’s a guy who’s still reeling from the tragic passing of his brother-in-arms Tom Petty, and so, this gig actually winds up being the perfect opportunity for him to grieve the loss. Seeing him up there, bouncing around and adding a curveball to Buckingham’s signature riffs and scales was admittedly quite an enigmatic experience.

Though, when it came time to actually pay homage to Petty, the band more or less fumbled. Instead of covering “Stop Draggin’ My Heart Around” or “Insider” or “I Will Run To You” or any of the multiple Petty-Campbell-Nicks options out there, they stuck to the predictably simple sing-a-long of “Free Fallin'”. Sure, it was “nice” to hear Nicks take the reins on the legendary FM hit, but c’mon, this was a chance to dig deep and do something really special. Instead, it all felt so lazy, and it didn’t help that Getty-stamped photos were flashing in the background throughout the cover.

No, really:

screen shot 2018 10 07 at 12 27 29 pm Live Review: Fleetwood Mac Revisit History and Try to Move On at Chicagos United Center (10/6)

The True Mac Daddy: Nicks sounds straight off the vinyl. Fleetwood can bang a drum like he’s in his thirties. John McVie is still John McVie. Hell, we’ll even give a round of applause to Finn for giving the second-best Buckingham impersonation after Bill Hader. But, the true Mac Daddy of the night was Christine McVie. The band’s oft-forgotten vocalist and keyboardist has only been back with the gang for a little over four years, after retiring from the stage in 1998, and she proves on this tour why her loss is paramount.

Not only does she lead the group’s more accentuated hits — ahem, “Everywhere” and “Little Lies” — but she also oozes with character, opting to go off-script in ways that felt incredibly natural and jamming out like the biggest fan in the room. She also hardly took a break like, say, Nicks, who would vanish from time to time. (That’s no dig on Nicks; this writer would have passed out 15 minutes into the show.) No, McVie’s a trooper from beginning to end, and blame it on Buckingham’s absence, but her presence is far more defined on this go-around.

So much so that the entire set ends with an unlikely duet between McVie and Nicks on “All Over Again”, a deep cut off of 1995’s Time, the first album at the time not to feature Nicks since 1974’s Heroes Are Hard to Find. It’s a bold move by the band, given that it’s hardly an epic closer or anything, but it’s a smart move. Seeing the two of them setting aside their differences and sharing the spotlight felt like a proper moment to end on. If anything, it feels emblematic of a time when women have never been more united.

It was beautiful.

That One Song: It’s a tossup between “Little Lies” and “Rhiannon”. The former is one of those bops you tend to forget, only to hear again and say, “Oh my god, I love this ****ing song,” while the latter is a legend in its own right. When Nicks began singing the mesmerizing ballad, which dates all the way back to 1975, she had the support of every single soul in the audience. Those who were leaving to get beer or hit the john quickly ran back to their seats. Those who were waiting to hear it all night bled their lungs out. Those who have loved this band forever and ever were in tears. It’s the song and always will be the song, and as long as Nicks is around, it’ll always be the song of the Mac.

I want to add a few thoughts to my review. What happened to Gypsy? They played it on Ellen but it didn't make it into the set list. Stevie talked way less than the last tour-the talking seemed more evenly divided and Mick came out to introduce people/songs. I didn't know he was going to come out to center stage with his drum during his solo. The young guy next to me was like that's cool! When Neil and Stevie were singing I Got You it felt like they were trying to recreate the Silver Springs intensity. Taku Hirano was fun to watch--he looked really into it. Chris seemed to play more too, I don't think her hand was bothering her like the last tour (remember she had a brace for a while). She seemed to play more here or more vigorously than she did with BuckVie. Someone already mentioned no top for Stevie. And the water bottle thing was funny...

Live Review and Photo Gallery: Fleetwood Mac at United Center

Fleetwood Mac
United Center, Chicago
Saturday, October 6, 2018

Every instance when the current members of Fleetwood Mac chanted “chains keep us together” at the United Center on only the second night of a North American tour that stretches well into 2019, it seemed to be much more than a chance for the audience to sing-a-long to what’s become its standard opener “The Chain,” but rather an internal commitment that no matter the degree of drama transpires, at least some version of the band will always exist. For those who missed the latest soap opera episode of what could easily be dubbed “As Fleetwood Mac’s World Turns,” the core four of drummer Mick Fleetwood, bassist John McVie, vocalist/keyboardist Christine McVie and singer Stevie Nicks are continuing for the second time without Lindsey Buckingham, who’s been let go this round (and touring solo through the Athenaeum Theatre on October 17), but once again replaced by two players.

Chances are even those who weren’t keeping up with the saga could instantly recognize the fresh faces, Neil Finn (of Crowded House and Split Enz fame) and Mike Campbell (from Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers), who dived head first into the Fleetwood Mac fold, despite Buckingham’s integral contributions being noticeably absent and missed. Then again, this is an act that’s been through numerous editions and incarnations (including most recently Christine McVie’s temporary retirement with merely Nicks and Buckingham out front in the 2000s), so it really wasn’t that far of a stretch to accept, at least as far as the venue’s sold out status was concerned.

Shaking up the line-up was accompanied by the unexpected inclusion of several rarities in between the main classics for well over two hours, which between all the players collectively and individually, meant there were tons of choices. “Little Lies,” “Dreams,” “Say You Love Me,” “Everywhere” and “Rhiannon” were just a handful of the Stevie and Christine notables that came across as sweet as ever, bathed in a wall of harmonies that may have sounded a bit different than the original records given the adjusted configuration, but were nonetheless textbook Fleetwood Mac.

The new recruits also had many chances to make the acquaintance of longtime fans in this format, with Finn excelling on Split Enz’s “I Got You,” Crowded House’s “Don’t Dream It’s Over” in an enchanting duet with Nicks, plus the set list shockers “Tell Me All The Things You Do” and “Hypnotized” representing Danny Kirwan and Bob Welch’s contributions long before Fleetwood Mac made a commercial splash. Campbell gave listeners from the days of Peter Green and “Black Magic Woman” (resurrected earlier by Nicks) another bluesy surprise with the snarling “Oh Well,” while a tribute to his pal and former employer Tom Petty via “Free Fallin’” with Stevie singing earned a hefty appraisal.

Even with the front line’s massive appeal on their own, Fleetwood Mac mega-hits such as “Landslide,” “You Make Loving Fun,” “Go Your Own Way” and “Don’t Stop” called to mind exactly how valuable the group’s extensive songbook has become well beyond its main run throughout 1970s and ‘80s, alongside the forgotten ‘90s cut “All Over Again” popping up unexpectedly as the debut duet between the ladies to neatly tie up the night’s theme. Now in operation for more than 50 years, it’s probably safe to say that no matter what goes down between personnel or who winds up making the final roster during any given season, these Rock and Roll Hall of Famers will likely “never break the chain” as they “don’t stop thinking about tomorrow.”

Fleetwood Mac sparkled as they united their fans at the end of a terrible Saturday
Posted By Jamie Ludwig on 10.09.18 at 02:30 PM

Maybe after seeing liar, bully, and partisan hack Brett Kavanaugh bulldozed onto the Supreme Court by the GOP on Saturday afternoon, you couldn't imagine doing anything as celebratory as attending an arena concert. But if that devastating development for American democracy—and especially for American women—had you wanting to escape into familiar songs brimming with female energy and tinged with mysticism, you could've done a lot worse than the Fleetwood Mac show at the United Center.

The second date on a tour called "An Evening with Fleetwood Mac," it was also the group's third gig since parting ways with longtime guitarist and singer Lindsey Buckingham in April. That move put more of the spotlight on singer Stevie Nicks and singer-keyboardist Christine McVie, along with the two men the band recruited to fill Buckingham's shoes: guitarist-vocalist Neil Finn (Split Enz, Crowded House) and lead guitarist Mike Campbell (Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers).

Those four were of course joined by the rhythm section for which the band is named—exuberant drummer Mick Fleetwood and comparatively reserved bassist John McVie—as well as three auxiliary musicians and two backup singers. They came onstage to a roar from the crowd and opened with "The Chain," kicking off a set that spanned the band's five-decade history, mixing familiar hits with songs written before Nicks and Buckingham joined in 1975—and throwing in some surprise covers. Presumably because Christine McVie rejoined Fleetwood Mac in 2014 (she'd left in 1998 in search of a quieter life), the set notably emphasized tunes she's written or cowritten for the band, including "Everywhere," "Say You Love Me," and "Little Lies."

To me, arenas are the least optimal type of concert venue: they're usually crowded and expensive, and the distance between artist and fan can make performances feel impersonal, especially compared to a club or house show. In fact, before Saturday I hadn't been to an arena concert in more than a decade. But despite my misgivings (and my general discomfort around huge numbers of people), the night turned out to be pretty fun. Fleetwood Mac are pros, with the expertise to connect with fans all the way up in the nosebleeds—any listener who's willing can come along with them on their musical journey.

"Willing" seems to be the right word here, or at least it did from where I was sitting. For each fan singing along with every song, there was another who got riled up for the big singles and then sat back down for everything else. Those apparently more casual fans didn't even perk up visibly when Fleetwood, John McVie, Campbell, and the other instrumentalists launched into hard-hitting, extended solos or grooves—this brings up questions about who goes to arena concerts and why, but that's a conversation probably best left to another time.
When the crowd erupted in song for the hits, it did my heart good—a chorus of thousands of women's voices joining in on "Dreams" or "Landslide" turned out to be a decent salve for the painful, misogynist national discourse that's surrounded Kavanaugh for weeks. And whether the crowd recognized it or not, Fleetwood Mac had clearly put a lot of care and feeling into building their set list—they took the trouble to introduce songs associated with former members Peter Green (who wrote "Black Magic Woman") and Daniel David Kirwan (who took a famous guitar solo on "Oh Well").

If you didn't know that Campbell and Finn were new additions, you'd never have guessed. Finn blended his voice perfectly into harmonies with Nicks and Christine McVie, carried off Buckingham's vocal parts effortlessly, and of course sounded right at home when the group covered the 1979 Split Enz single "I Got You" and the 1986 Crowded House hit "Don't Dream It's Over." The chemistry among the musicians seemed natural and familiar, as if they'd been working together for years rather than just a couple of months of rehearsals.

Fleetwood Mac famously played Bill Clinton's first inauguration in 1993, and in the run-up to the 2016 presidential election, Nicks went on the record as a Hillary Clinton supporter. In an interview with the New York Times she predicted that Clinton would triumph, and quipped that she'd like to put together a group to perform "Landslide" in celebration. In light of that—and in light of the fact that Nicks and Christine McVie have persevered in the face of sexism and misogyny throughout their decades in the music business—I was curious if anyone onstage would comment on the events of the day. But throughout Fleetwood Mac's two-and-a-half-hour set, all the onstage talk focused on the band's legacy and music. That music continues to bring together longtime fans and new generations of listeners, which is an achievement in and of itself. Though the crowd skewed older, there were plenty of teenagers too, many decked out in feathered hairstyles, scarves, and bell-bottoms worthy of Nicks and Christine McVie.

Finally, at the end of their three-song encore—"Free Falling" (the Tom Petty song), "Don't Stop," and the Nicks-McVie duet "All Over Again"—Fleetwood left the crowd with some parting wisdom. "Take care of yourselves, and more importantly, in this very strange world we seem to be living in, remember to be kind to one another," he said. "And remember we love you so very much."
