Don't you agree the beginning of this song rips off Fleetwood Mac?
SLADE- Gudbye To Jane

I had to listen to station man again... yeah, they are similar. I'd probably never come to think of it myself if you had not pointed it out though - Gudbye to Jane sounds typical of Slade and Station man sounds like Kirwan... the opening riff is kinda generic too, can't really be called rip off.

0_o I would have thought it was Station Man if that guy didn't start singing different lyrics.

 They're two totally different songs to me. The tempo is totally different too, I can never imagine 'Station man' being played like that.
Are you talking about a rumours-era version of station man that I havent heard of, or something?

I haven't heard any pre-White Album Station Mans, so that could be why.

I've only read that they used to play 'Station man' live with Lindsey and Stevie, never heard it myself.
I guess that Lindsey/Stevie ripped of Slade in that case, since 'Gudbye...' was released in 1972.

Nice. :) Yeah, I can see the resemblance more in that version.

When they first started playing "Station Man" live in 1970, it was much slower, and it gradually sped up during 1970. They stopped playing it sometime in 1971, and it was only when it got revived by the '75 line-up that it sounded anything like "Gudbuy T'Jane". Even then, I think it's only a vague resemblance - the Slade song was always much faster  Slade always did their own thing, and I doubt they'd have been listening to "Kiln House" at that time, to be honest. :)

Generic riff...
...there are hundreds of songs (before and after "Station Man") with a similar riff to that, especially from that era. If you dig through the Mott The Hoople catalogue, you can probably find two or three just from them.
They stopped playing it sometime in 1971, and it was only when it got revived by the '75 line-up...
Actually, I heard them play it in 1974 during the Heroes Are Hard To Find tour. (They did two Kirwan tunes that night..."Station Man" & "Jewel Eyed Judy")...unfortunately, even with all my detective work, I've yet to find a recording of that show; it was amazing!

Phil Lesh even admitted where the song's inspiration came from.

There's a bit of "tuning" before the song, jump to 2:04.

Never knew that - I would've liked to hear Bob do those :)

I can't imagine Bob singing either or those Kirwan tunes. Odd choice for him. But I love Station Man!
