View Full Version : Let's Talk About...I CAN'T WAIT

Still on the Rock A Little drive here, been listening to that album loads lately!

So what are everyone's thoughts on this track then? I know it's one of Stevie's most popular, or certainly seems to be. I love the Letterman story about how he played the video over and over until she appeared, and how she "fired" her managers who said she wouldn't do the show!

This is actually one of the tracks I know least about. All I know is that she wrote the words after Rick Nowels wrote one of the most "exciting" tracks she'd ever heard. That makes sense in relation the urgency of the lyrics etc but does anyone have any more info about their actual influence etc? It's definitely one of mer more frantid, dramatic lyrics.

Even though it was co-written with Rock Nowels, who is one of my favourite pop writers because of all the great songs he did with Ellen Shipley for Belinda Carlisle (I LOVE Belinda!) I've never actually been over keen on this song. I do love the loud wailing rock vocals at the start though. I know Stevie still likes this song, as shown by her kicking off Crystal Visions with it...even though I still think that that coompilation is downright weird! For that reason it's perhaps something of an oddity in her mid 80s output in that she still acknowledges it!

One other thing, in Crystal Visuions Stevie says that it was only ever performed live once and because it was so difficult it was a distsater and they never did it again. Now, we all know she did sooooo much coke in the 80s but didn't she perform it throughout the entire Rock A Little tour? She can't have forgotten all of them! Or was it really just the once?

Does anyone have a clue what some of the rushed, crazy lyrics are towards the end?

So, thoughts?

p.s: I'm already thinking about what my next track will be for this thread and I'm going to go for one that I actually have things to say about rather than just searching for info about ones I don't know much about! haha...

First, this song is catchy as hell. Sure the lyrics aren't Stevie's deepest, but it's catchy and has a good beat!

Second, the music video makes me smile. Especially the close ups, her facial expressions are just so cute!

I read somewhere that I can't wait was recorded in just one take. I think she said it herself, they just went in the studio and did it. Perfect at once.

True/false?

It's a good song, a floorfiller at the clubs in Stockholm as I remember it.

But I like her voice better on The wild heart, one can hear on Rock a little that the drug's are on it's way to really damage it.

Stevie did this song the entire RAL tour. She forgot all the others I guess. I wonder what preformance of it she remembers? It was great. It was a mess - but it was a great mess. :D

I heard this song was done in one try. We don't have any other takes from it, so we have to take her word for it. (Maybe?)

I love the video for this song. It's actually my favorite solo video of Stevie's. Love the song itself too. I always thought it would be cool if Stevie opened with ICW and came down those large stairs at the start of every show.

I've heard the lyrics are about Joe Walsh.

I hadn't heard that, but the dark intensity of I Can't Wait does seem to channel what we know about their relationship.

Blame it on something at first sight
Put the blame on me, if you want to

She always said that with the two of them, it was either split up or die, and who can you blame when faced with that kind of love?

she has said before that she would've given up everything if he (joe walsh) could've just been serious for 15 minutes - I'm paraphrasing but it was something close to that.

I think she couldn't wait on him. couldn't wait for him to be serious, settle down, commit? hell I don't know....but she couldn't F-ing wait lol

I think it is awful. I have thought it was a shlocky tacky mess since the first time I heard it. The way the melody of the chorus apes the synth note for note seems lazy as well.

you kind of just summed up the 80s.

Yeah, I don't dislike it, but I agree that it's lazy and gimmicky. I'd still rather she did a song like this in concert over Rock and Roll. I'd rather have her own hokey stuff than a cover.

I think she did I Can't Wait the whole tour in 1986.

I always liked the thing. It's a big, noisy contraption. It's all so obviously just a cheap pump-up -- but that's Rick Nowels to a T. I don't think Stevie herself had anything to do with the music track. I think Rick & the other musicians pulled all that together, & Stevie wrote some words tailored to the instrumental. In that sense, it was as much a collaboration as Nightbird or If Anyone Falls.

Before the 1986 tour started, I dreamt that Stevie opened her tour -- & her show -- in Japan with this song. It seems I was expecting a flashier high-tech Wild Heart show in 1986.

I Can't Wait always seemed like the obvious first single to me (because it is so obviously a radio song), so its exclusion from the singles market was weird.

I have to say...I love it! Going along with what a few others have said, its so 80's...but that's what so fun about it. I think I also like it because its so different from the kinds of songs she is famous for (Rhiannon, Edge of 17, etc) Even Stand Back, which has its own 80's sound seems different to me. I'd love to see her do this live.

Over-the-top '80s pop for sure, but still I love the vocal and she looked great in the video. The majority of the Talk to Me video was not flattering - her hair, make-up, clothing made her look pale & sickly, so the I Can't Wait video was a big sigh of relief.

I saw her perform this live three times(Worcester & Mansfield shows). The sound mix was a mess and her vocal was nearly inaudible, but she did have energy and lots of hair flipping.

Here is what I have for live performances.

I'd like to see her do it in concert with the video playing first. Then, when she breaks down the wall in the video, she can break onto the stage at the same time.

I remember seeing the Ice Capades as a child and Mary Poppins did this. First you had footage from the movie and then a human Mary Poppins emerged out of the screen flying. I was mesmerized. So, if it worked for Mary Poppins, I think it will work for Stevie:nod:.

Probably my least favorite of her top 20 Billboard solo hits. It's more of a product of studio wiziardy and over production rather than a song. Also as someone who actually attended numerous RAL tour shows IMO it did not work well as a live song. The tension of the song just seemed kind of false as compared to superior live songs like Stand Back or Edge.

I hate it. Stevie has plain lost it by this point. Just look at her frenetic shaking in the music video. Her range is so limited at this stage it's scary. The Red Rocks DVD says a lot, and not any of it good. But boy did she bounce back strong in 1996.

Holmdel comes in a distant second, followed by Oklahoma. They'll give you idea of how I Can't Wait sounded live, but that's about it.

The other recordings are audience bootlegs - transfers from audio cassette to mp3. They're all poor quality, particularly Mansfield, Mass.

I love ICW! So much fun and energy!
The video is my favourite Stevie-video, I love how she isn't really "on point" during some scenes, she messing with her hair, she seems to be nearly cracking up by something happening behind the camera-guy and at one point she opens her mouth to start singing and then deceides not to and turns around again.

I just watched the video again because...well, I am writing case notes and sometimes I have to just *stop* and do something light-hearted for a moment. :o

For one thing. I think this video really illustrates the move from ethereal-soft Stevie to sexy rock chick Stevie. She was such a beautiful example of what we were all trying to achieve back then- lol.

Also, the scenes where she has just broken through and the light is shining down- so gorgeous. The hair! The moves!

Again, I guess you really just had to be there. :woohoo:

I'd rather hear her skip words and bleat out some inappropriate "wells" and "babys" in a hoarse holler, kohl dripping off her eyes, etc. She was a hot mess. It's fun, like watching some kind of wild drama unfolding. She was never closer to Janis, than during the '86 tour.

I tried! I could do some of them! But, never had the opportunity to show anyone. At one of the NOTS shows, I saw a bunch of people doing them. with scary precision. I was in awe.

I'd love to see the 80's Janet, in rock-chick mode. Did you have leggings in zebra or leopard print? Black suade boots with fringe? I know all these LI looks, because my sister was 2 years older than me and she was the real deal, total 80's realness. And Stevie's hair in the ICW video is the epitome of Long Island hair, it is what every girl in every salon ('Hot Cutz', 'The Lemon Tree', 'The Mane Event') aspired to, remember? LOL

Have you heard her live in the past ten years? ;)

You're right. She probably couldn't pull off Seven Wonders the way she did in 1986.

But somehow I still think that 1985-86 was her worst period. Maybe not with respect to vocal range as I said, but with respect to vision. Either she was being led astray by producers who put her in an unflattering light, or her own vision led her astray. She had no warmth and moreover no real daring. The Red Rocks video really says it all.

1996-present finds her, if nothing else, more awake and with better artistic sensibilities.

On this score I must respectfully disagree. I think we find her closest to Ms. Joplin on Rhiannon and Sisters Of The Moon from the Mirage video.

I love this song. It's my guilty pleasure. My partner LOVES Fleetwood Mac and Stevie's solo stuff, but doesn't care for this particular song. She doesn't like much typical 8Os stuff, but this song makes me so excited. It just reminds me of waiting for Stevie to come out, at one of her shows...so exciting...*shivers*

On this score I must respectfully disagree. I think we find her closest to Ms. Joplin on Rhiannon and Sisters Of The Moon from the Mirage video.

I agree with this too, just to butt in and be rude, sorry! lol

I'd never seen Janis perform until last year and I was struck by the similarities in some Stevie performances of Rhiannon and Sisters of the Moon, etc. The foot stamping, the changing of hands to hold the mic, the head movement...yep.

It's kind of fun (and tragic) to hear how much she screwed up 'I Can't Wait' when she performed it. She never seemed sure of where she was in the song. She totally loses it during the synth passage. She simply just couldn't nail it. Why? Perhaps it's a little bit out of her typical realm, but's not a very complex song.

Still...how do I love it. How do I love it.

What you guys all keep calling "screwing up" is NOT screwing up!!! It's called "letting it all hang out" & "blasting your balls & your ass right to the wall."

That's the Rock a Little tour! Stevie blasted her balls & her ass right to the wall. No looking back! She could never look back, that woman used to a Hollywood living.

YEESH.

David are you okay...? :xoxo:

My mom and I love ICW. She steals Timespace every single morning so that she can listen to that along with Sometimes it's a Bitch and Love's a Hard Game to Play. She loves those.

Funny story; the first week I got RAL was all the way back like mid-way through last year's school year. I was supposed to be home alone until like 6 p.m. so I raced home to dance to RAL in my Stevie cape, right? :blob1: My dad came home early and found me spinning in a black hooded cape in my room to ICW. I don't know how long he was standing in the doorway, but it was really awkward when I realized he was there! :o

I totally recommend listening to the live version from melbourne just to hear her random outburst at 1.27 when she goes to sing "well she dances around..." and then realises its the wrong verse. lol :lol:she also sings(just) "blame it on something at first sight put the blame on me, would you blame it on my wild heart?"
It's terrible but it's kind of like the morbid fascination people have with car crashes, you just can't help but look.:D

True, we wouldn't even be talking about it if she hadn't messed it up, I think its awesome though, It really expresses her in the time period, that why i can't understand people who bag out the Rock A Little album, sure it's corny and 80's. But thats why i love it!:D

I agree, it would be too boring if she did everything perfect all the time. It just shows she's a person who makes mistakes like anyone else really..... but for some reason it's just alot cuter when she does it.

It's not one of my favorites. I especially can't stand the beginning where she wails "I I love you...I I love you" or whatever. It's okay other than that, but not really a favorite. And apparently I'm not alone here.

Amen. BTW, for anyone who's interested, I have the full 4:30 boot of ICW from the Sydney show. It cuts out in the middle - like a tape change right at the break - but it's pretty much all there... "Blame it on something at first sight/Put the blame on me, blame it on my wild heart...." Audio quality is unmixed soundboard, I believe. B+/A-, depending on how you rate things.

First, this song is catchy as hell. Sure the lyrics aren't Stevie's deepest, but it's catchy and has a good beat!

Second, the music video makes me smile. Especially the close ups, her facial expressions are just so cute!

P.S. You gotta love Mick too!

This video used to get me so excited...this came out right before I saw Stevie for the first time in '86...it has a lot of energy and drive mixed with mystery! I was 12 and starstruck myself..so Stevie just seemed like a complete and total rockstar to me at this point and because of this song! Absolutlety loved it..crazy.

Personally, my favourite version of ICW is the parody I wrote. ;) (I can't remember who exactly came up with the I Gained Weight title and inspired this...)

I wanna eat yooooou

Sometimes she noshes, sometimes well she's only drinkin'
Then when she weighs in, somehow, she can't believe it
Well, yes I love food
We've never been outta touch
Yes, I love food
Fat and carbs, too
It's too much, well

I gained weight, I gained weight
My pants are stretched by my thighs, right before my eyes
Well, I gained weight, I gained weight
And I've gotta know how I will binge once again

She wonders how many more hours her muffins will be bakin'
In secret, she eats those chocolates like crazy, with no words spoken

Well, she dances around in circle
She's got that feelin' now
Blame it on something at first sight
Put the blame on the fast food
To be continued

How many cals in a gigantic donut now?
How many cookies can I shove into my mouth?
How many cals, hey, is butter a carb?
How many licks does it take to get to the center of a...?

I gained weight, I gained weight
I'm not wasting my time, expanding my waistline
I gained weight, I gained weight
What can I do when I'm crazy for food?

I'm gonna eat you...

I'm partial to all the RAL tracks since that album starting the ball rolling for me as far as Stevie is concerned. I Can't Wait is a song filled with manic energy and desperation. I love the lyrics, the beat and all the cheesy synths. I think it's really cool that she only recorded the vocal once, or so she claims.
