View Full Version : Her Mosty 'Coke'-y Song

The SN song that makes my teeth numb just listening to it has to be Mirror Mirror. The title of the song, the insessant and relentless pulsing keyboard combined with the mindless "He said", "Oh well" "not really" lyrics, and her fluttering hyper-nasal incantations just conjure up images of a studio soundboard with one LONG RAIL from the bass knob to high-end knob. Ah...the 80's!!!

What song is the most coke-y to you ?

"I'm SOOOOO HAPPY THAT YOU STAYED"

I think "Imperial Hotel" -- one of my favorites -- is cokier than just about anything I can think of.

Talk to Me, I Can't Wait, and Sister Honey!!!

Especially in Talk to Me "Is it all that hard, is it all that tough, well now you've taken all my dreams isn't that enough" -------> she says that so fast! And then all the babble at the end!

And I Can't Wait, well I don't think anything needs to be said.

Agreed that the RAL album is THE coke album. That's also the album where everything began to fall apart. I really like "Mirror Mirror", it took quite a long time for me to warm up to it, but I really like the song now. Everyone seems to not like "The Nightmare" but when you understand what it's about (which I believe it's about her brief marriage, every single line in the song makes perfect sense in this aspect) the song takes on a whole new feel.

Agreed that the RAL album is THE coke album. That's also the album where everything began to fall apart. I really like "Mirror Mirror", it took quite a long time for me to warm up to it, but I really like the song now. "Mirror Mirror" shares that pentatonic quality in the modulation with "Joan of Arc," "Battle of the Dragon," and even several tracks on "Tango in the Night" (including "Mystified" & "Little Lies"). Methinks there's a connection somehow, perhaps related to the widespread use of the DX-7.

Everyone seems to not like "The Nightmare" but when you understand what it's about (which I believe it's about her brief marriage, every single line in the song makes perfect sense in this aspect) the song takes on a whole new feel.Only silly people don't like "The Nightmare." It's a beautiful, impassioned song, filled with Weberesque mysticism, surrealistic smoking claws, & wild child cries. It's more "Beauty & the Beast" than "Beauty & the Beast" is. Chris Nicks obviously helped Stevie with the wonderful chords. "The Nightmare" represents, like "Dreams," the perfect blending of form & content -- great pop art.

I think her most coke-y song is "Thousand Days".

With lyrics like:

"The closest you've ever come it me was to help me up the stairs
You stood in the middle of the stairway
You nearly dragged me up the stairs"

and:

"If there is no time, and there is no place
And if there was, well, you'd never leave a trace
And as all archangels do to you
And as all arch enemies will finally do to you, too
Well, I found you"

plus"

"The sun is here today now
and I requested a storm"

I think you'd be hard pressed to find a coke-yer song than this.

How about:

So gangsta.

The part that gets me from Talk To Me is the "veil a swelling tear" line, with that thing she does with her voice. She must have been hanging over that mirror all day.

Gold Dust Woman
Nightbird

What's cokey about Nightbird? It never occurred to me. GDW is a given.

Sorcerer is pretty cokey, lyrically. Also Violet and Blue and Whole Lotta Trouble, even though it's from OSOTM.

What's cokey about Nightbird?

.

It's random-ness...the way she describes herself....very dark....I picture her looking at herself through her coke mirror as she snorts up.

Without Sandy Stewart, I think this song would have been a total mess.

I love the song.

"Alice" is Klonopin era .I agree about most of RAL..I would have to submit Seven Wonders as it was recorded around Halloween of 1985 right before Betty Ford and you know she had to have one last big blow out.It is the very last thing she recorded during the cocaine years.

Sometimes it's hard for me to listen to her sing those songs where she does that "annoying baby" thing with her voice. She never used to sing like that before. Before her voice was so powerful and in your face and dynamic, then when she did "Tango" and "Rock A Little", her voice just changed. It was a different sound. As if she was also getting high off of helium. LOL!

"When I See You Again" (what's the matter baby...)
"Are You Mine" demo
"Rock A Little (Go Ahead Lily)" Which is still one of my favorites
"I Sing For The Things" also one of my favorites
Most of the "Rock A Little" album. I don't have the cd anymore so I can't really listen to the songs to hear them again. It's been a while.

After all of it though I still love her.:wavey:

It kind of verges on being a mess as it is, lol. I really like it, but there's too much going on in the chorus. They're all singing over each other and it's hard to sing along to.

I actually got the date wrong ,It was c. Halloween 1986 ,after the RAL tour that she recorded it, just before she went into Betty Ford. There is an interview somewhere where she discusses it .Welcome to the Room Sara is post Betty Ford.I'm not certain about When I See You again.

What Has Rock and Roll Ever Done For You (the only Stevie song where, if held at gunpoint, I would consider lip synching to in drag)

Christopher

"What has Rock and Roll Ever Done For You"..... a coke-y song of enormous proportions , as is anything recorded during the RAL era, including the demos and songs she was sending from the road to FM for the TITN sessions i.e. "Joan of Arc", "WHRREDFY", "Juliet" & definitely "Seven Wonders" which to me, was the last great nails on chalkboard vocal of that snow dream era!!

I have to add that Stevie's vocals were beginning to show signs of her addiction on "Wild Heart" where Stevie's voice started to change yet again. She was pretty consistent from BD thru Mirage, then she began to become more confident in her singing and took more risks, which produced some of her memorable vocals ever!!

On WH she really started belting and doing even more vibrato then anything ever before. The song "Wild Heart" sounds wildly "coke-y" to me, singing her a** off hitting vocal highs, and not to mention that marathon run towards the end ("even in the darkest places in your heart') that she could never ever dare to duplicate again on stage or in the studio.
"Stand Back" had heavy vibrato and her voice sounded different to me when this was 1st released, and finally I'm surprised no one has mentioned "Nothing Ever Changes" which has some amazing "coke-y" vocals in the verses:nod:

I know, right? Isn't it awesome? Isn't it coke-y? LOL

As for 'Joan of Arc' which was mentioned, I thought that was a post-Betty Ford song. When I listen to it, I think of a scary detox ward. EspeciaLly the line where she sings:
"And they came in tired,
and they said "tired was the end of the line..."
well I can't save you
Joan of Arc, this time..."

I figured 'came in tired' means you were at the end of your rope when you arrived at the hospital.

Stevie must have ingested several kilos during those 'Mirror, Mirror' sessions. She obviously felt strongly about the track, I think I've heard about 8 different takes, one kookier than the next! I just had a thought: anyone remember those creepy bathroom self pics she did, where she has the dark circles under her eyes? Maybe THAT's the mirror she's referencing, instead of the obvious coke mirror reference ?

You have ALL failed to mention the one demo that Stevie was going to do - and I know it was during the RAL recording sessions...and I think it was like 15 minutes long or something - maybe someone can post it I might have it somewhere...

My Love Is Never Lost I think is the title - she's completely coked out - all the overdubs are terrible...it's like putting 5 of the different versions of mirror mirror together and playing it at once...and then you have the backup girls saying how they are so lost...

OH and let's not forget at the beginning you hear Stevie kinda laughing and saying "It's starting to burn..." like she just took a hit.

THAT my friends is the cokey-ist song.

Oooh....turns out I actually had this. It does sound like a mess, but it's kind of cool to hear them putting the song together. I assumed this was from Bella Donna or Tom Monheit sessions or thereabouts based on the audio quality and her voice. Most demos/outtakes from RAL have poor audio quality and her voice was much craggier in those days.

Also, who's singing with her? She's definitely singing over a track of herself, but it sounds like there are others besides Sharon & Lori... Anyone know for sure?

Come to think of it Sister Honey sounds like it IS about coke:

"strange fascination, some kind of temptation"
"she will help you make up your mind"
"...it's your last chance, cause she's almost gone now/and she'll go FAST jet plane/and then FAST like a star stream/and she'll hit you with a fury/whispering the words one more time..."
"don't let that golden hair get in your way, baby"
