I've been listening to "Greatest Hits Live" (recoreded at the "Boston Tea Party") with the original Mac lately and it's recalled a question for me that I've had for many years but never been able to find an answer to.
During that smokin' guitar and percussion solo in "Green Manalishi", someone is playing the high-hat cymbals while I would assume Mick is playing the other percussion.
Since it's not physically possible to do both, I'm wondering who's doing what during that time. I've looked everywhere I can think to look and have never found an answer to that question.
Anyone have any suggestions or the actual answer?
Thanks for the help.

I wasn't there. since Nigel did not appear until after Peter returned, the only other person to play percussion besides Peter is Jeremy Spencer who has played maraccas, piano and tamborine.
On a related note, there was more than one percussionist also in "swimming Around In Your A...ole" too. In that one it is harder to tell because the recording is so "crappy"

Sorry to bring this up Vinnie, just a matter of cultural difference.
Here in Holland we usually laugh about American TV-programs where sometimes spoken words are "overruled" by a bleep. As a matter of fact we are for openness. Thus no "bleeps" or anything of the kind.
That means we admit that in the song you mentioned the lyrics are actually "Swimming around in your asshole", as opposed to "swimming Around In Your A...ole".
Does this mean any sense?

I think I'm a bit lost. Who is Nigel? Where did Peter go? I was under the impression (which could be 100%wrong, I don't know) that this was recorded before Peter left the band. I have not heard of a Nigel.
Could it be Peter and Jeremy assisting while Mick played the other drums by hand?
I'm just confused and need help.
Thank you for helping me answer this question. It helps me get a mental picture of what was happening on stage when I listen.
Thank you again.

I totally agree. It is strictly an American thing. I lived in Mallorca, Spain for 2 1/2 years when I was a child and there were a lot of things I saw on television there (and on the beach:D:D:D) that I would never have seen or heard on American television.

I personally don't have a problem with it and am a little more colorful in my speech than others, I think the convention to put censorship in the language has a long and sordid Puritan tradition in the new world. What is really fucked up is that this country has more problems with the realities of the epithets than the verbalization of it. Puritans usually have a secret sordid life. (as evidenced by our high moral aspirations juxtaposed against , lets say for the sake of illustration, extra ordinary rendition or torture) What a country.
To honor my fellow friends out here on this international forum I will no longer censor my use of Asshole , especially since it is the title of the song.
in another matter. Nigel refers to Nigel Watson who accompanied Peter Green when he rejoined Fleetwood Mac to complete an American tour after Jeremy Spencer left for the children of god comunal group. Nigel played congas. i only brought him up because he played congas at some point when peter was playing with Fleetwood Mac
During the recording in question, if Peter was playing six string bass he would not have been able to play percussion, the only people left were John Jeremy, or Danny. Jeremy did sometimes play percussion. I don't really know if he did on that recording at the Boston Tea Party

"I was there" when FM played "Green Manalishi" on stage at Konserthuset in Stockholm, Sweden, April 1 1970. While Peter played his 6-string bass solo Mick concentrated on high-hat cymbals. During an intermission of a couple of minutes in the middle of the solo Peter took his hands off the bass and played congas instead.
Could it be a similar situation that's heard on the Boston Tea Party recording?

Thanks to someone on another thread directing users to the sugarmegs website (If I had known this site existed...) I discovered a couple shows from that '71 tour one can stream.
There's a jam excerpt as listed from a Long Island show that is a practically unlistenable recording , but from what I can hear the performance is on a mindblowing scale. Is it possible this is taken from the Fillmore East, or did the band do jams every night after the Fillmore show? Maybe Peter wanted to get his point across that he wasn't into performing comercially viable music anymore. According to the Celmins book, by the end of the tour the rest of the band (especially Danny) was completely frustrated, and stressed out by Peter's voyages onstage.

Slipkid - these are the recordings I'm aware of from partial shows of that early '71 tour with Peter Green stepping in for Jeremy Spencer:
Fleetwood Mac – San Bernardino, 2/19/71
Station Man
Get Like You Used To Be
Dragonfly
Purple Dancer
I’d Rather Go Blind
Tell Me All the Things You Do
Fleetwood Mac – San Bernardino, 2/19/71 (from ‘70s Merely A Portmanteau vinyl bootleg)
Station Man
Tell Me All The Things You Do
(these are better sound quality than the more complete show above, also "TMATTYD" runs longer)
Fleetwood Mac – Fillmore East, New York City, 2/26/71
I’d Rather Go Blind
Jam
Station Man
Jam
Fleetwood Mac – Rock Pile, Long Island, 3/27/71
Jam
The sound quality for these last two recordings is terrible, possibly the worst of any bootlegs I've ever heard. But you're right, it does sound like some excellent playing....if only we could hear it properly! As far as these being the correct dates and venues - who knows? But I've read that the band did a lot of jamming during that tour - at Green's insistence - and the rest of the band got bored / frustrated by that.

These are the two recordings from sugarmegs.org site. The TMATTYD jam from San Bernadino is interesting to hear. Peter was always a great rhythm player, underrated in fact.
The Rock Pile show is a ball of noise, but you can tell in parts that Green is discovering new territory, more adventurous than his last months in 1970. It's ashame the rest of the band didn't like it, because compared to the Allmans, Cream, and Dead jams (which can get boring), this is on another level altogether.

Recordings from the 1971 tour of the states is the holy grail of Peter Green material, for me anyway. I sure hope decent recordings will turn up one day. Maybe Wolfgangs Vault has material from Fillmore East, or Dinky has recorded some? If he was still with the band then.
I'm pretty sure the dates for the Fillmore and Rock Pile gigs are accurate.
I got them from a lady who got them from the taper.
The taper worked at Fillmore East and also taped the November 1969 gig.
The Fillmore tape got destroyed in the transfer, so the sound on the original tape was probably pretty good.

Do you mean the tapers personal copy was destroyed, or was it Fillmore's copy? If it was Fillmore's copy, then it is a tragedy. We will never get to hear it with decent sound.

The way I understood it the master tape was destroyed.
But you never know, some copies may have been made in the years before.

:lol::thumbsup::thumbsup:I couldn't agree more with your views about our Puritan outside and "not so Puritan" inside. We are a closeted culture here in so many ways!!!:lol::lol:
Thank you so much for the information and clarification. I honestly was not aware of the Nigel Watson connection at that time. That really helps.
Thank you again.

MY GAWD! Is this the title of a song? Where from?
Is this from "the Harold era" I wonder? The period that made PG call FM "a bunch of performing clowns"? - Must be one of Jeremy´s....
Apart from the puritan/non-puritan/censorship/non-censorship discussion - the aestetical, olfactoric implications and visual imagery this sporting activity brings to mind - calls for.....a certain restraint....

I think this may have been around that time. Mick, John, Peter, Danny and Jeremy all play on this CD although the copy I have has no liner notes and it actually only pictures Mick, John, Peter and Jeremy on the cover shot. All three guitarists/vocalists perform on the CD though.
This is why I could never figure out who was doing what when it came to "Green Manalishi". I heard the strong bass in the middle and then the congas and the hi-hat cymbal and bass drum. Knowing it's not physically possible for a drummer to play the hi-hat in that way as well as play the congas, I was puzzled as to who else might be involved. Once I got involved with this discussion forum, I figured, what the hell, I'll ask!!!
