Wow, thanks for that Luke. I've never heard it before.
Her voice is so strong on this, I wonder if she'd be able to still sing like this.
Is anyone able to make an MP3 of this?

WOW!! What a beautiful song and some great vocals. Stevie hits some pretty high notes there. I truly believe that her voice fits this genre of music so well. I would like to hear a whole album of this type of music.

Me too. I think it sounds like something that would have been done for Stormy Weather. I think an album of torch songs would suit Stevie very well and be a breath of fresh air.

I'm always so amazed when something like this bubbles up. I mean, we as fans are so on top of things that it always surprises me when some oddity like this comes along that none of us have ever heard of and don't know anything about. Anyways, glad to have it! Thanks, Ricoh

I just did a quick Google on "call on me for magic" thinking it was an old standard kind of song but didn't turn up anything in the first couple pages. There are songs called "call on me" by Janis Joplin and one by Cptn. Beefheart. Initially I thought how clever of her to sing an orchestrated version of a Janis Joplin song but then I looked and it doesn't have the same lyrics. Did Stevie write this herself? Definately her kind of lyrics with words like sorcerer and enchantment. After a couple listens with the headphones I really dig this song. The whole Unleashed thing has seemed like they are kind of beating a dead horse to me, but gems like this get me all excited for the ol' gal again and I think a standards album would be a graceful, appropriate and welcomed sidestep at this stage in her career! Did no one read what David Kahne wrote about the song on the actual site? It's not a standard, Kahne wrote it.

"This is a song I wrote that Stevie sang for me. I like the magic theme with her tone. I thought it might be good for a movie one day. So far, not..."

Thanks for the MP3 btw!

My bad. I didn't visit the site when I saw someone had posted an mp3. I agree about the song being in a movie-thats kind of what I was thinking when I first heard it. Like it should be feautered prominently in a movie-not just relegated to the soundtrack like most of her movie songs have been! Ricoh

Well, consider me impressed! This is the kinda thing I love- something so completely different and unexpected. I love everything about this song- the tune, the vocal, the arrangement, etc. I can picture Stevie in an old Art Deco theatre in front of a big band on risers singing into a large square microphone. She would have her hair up in a chignon and wearing a strapless crushed velvet gown with large dangly earrings. Very retro make-up with long, fake eyelashes and deep cerise lips. I never thought Mama could pull off singing Gershwin-like music, but she up and gone done it good! Now I can picture her singing songs like "The Man I Love," "Summertime," etc.

Has anyone written to David Kahne yet to thank him effusively for posting this lovely song? Perhaps he will be inspired to dig up another collaboration sitting in the vaults somewhere?

I've listened about five times now and I absolutely love this...I agree with who-ever said it's sort of Disney-like...I do understand why it wasn't used for TISL, but it definately should be used in a movie...to me, lyrically, it sort of hearkens back to Rooms On Fire...like ROF II...I could hear it being remixed to a sort of Dance beat...not propulsive, but like a more poppy sound...I'd love to hear that...but as for what it is ... Loving the highnotes, and enjoying it immenesly! I predict many listens to come on my Ipod...thanks again to the original sharer, and the converter!!!

Still not relishing the idea of a Standards cover cd for Stevie... but this does prove that she'd do it well if she does do it (not that I had any doubts before...)

This is song is so Stevie! What a great find, she simply must do more new material, she is too talented to just keep doing the same old, same old. Which all her fans love, but still, she is too talented to just keep redoing all the old stuff. She has plenty of fans that would support any new songs she would do. This is a real gem, and she still can hit the high notes which give this song great depth!

Amazing. The writer obviously worked a lot of "Stevie language" into the lyric. It's normally not the genre I listen to, but you can't deny its appeal. It just shows that along with singing the phone book, Stevie could excel in other areas of music...and I wish she would. We can't expect her spin around the stage when she's 65 ( I fear for her safety now). So it would be a great, graceful coda to her career if she started to head this area. I can image her having huge hits like Elton John had with the Lion King and others. She should revisit Goldfish and Ladybug!!:]

Questions for Uncut magazine interview:

"Stevie, how do you feel singing songs like Call on Me For Magic? Are you comfortable enough with the standard rock and roll format that you wouldn't want to consider an album of contemporary tunes, like Call on Me for Magic?"

That would be a dream come true for me... a la Winehouse Back to Black. She could do At Last and some of those other songs that she brings such beauty to.

Sigh... Dream on Silly Dreamer.

I do like this torch song but agree standards are not my fav...

maybe someone out there will grab the vocals and do a remix???

but Dave's production on the song Love Changes is interesting is one of my favorites of TISL...

"when love changes in the flash of an eye, it leaves people burning by the side of the road.

you stand there, you got nothing to hold...that don't mend the sorrow"

I think an album of torch songs would suit Stevie very well and be a breath of fresh air.

My sentiments exactly. With the right song choices this album could be killer. Actually it could be a combo of contemporary material like Call On Me For Magic and standards (Sunday Kind Of Love and so on). The new songs can be written by Stevie or whomever she chooses, likes, wants..... etc etc and given the treatment that David has provided. She would gain a new appreciation for her talent and versatility as we all know, Stevie can sing any style of music.

A standards setlist is not exactly what I would want for Stevie, but it does open you up to an entire different audience. With that kind of repertoire she could be playing the Hollywood Bowl. Michael Buble, Harry Connick, Jr. kind of thing. Michele

WOW.

Thanks for posting this.

Best and most interesting vocal I have heard from her since...

TISL title track? Or way before.

The arrangement is a bit halting, but her singing is stellar.
The whispery tones, the gentle delivery, that angelic falsetto.

Dreamy.

:woohoo:

If she was singing like this, and making these kinds of interesting choices in recording, I would not blink at spending the current tour prices.

In fact, I would pay far more.

That made my day.

some thoughts on this "new" stevie demo:

the good ...

-the falsetto is amazing. obviously.
-in this part:

some sorcerer has touched you
placed his hands upon your soul
stays until your feelings lose control

the transition from falsetto to her lower register between the second and third line is, dare i say, downright beautiful.

-it's so nice to hear her sing a melody that's outside her established comfort zone.
-the dynamic range and restraint are both impressive. she sings this like a musician.
-she somehow got in touch again with the soft, reedy timbre her voice had in the 70s and 80s, so the high notes sound deceptively high. she doesn't go higher than A above middle C but because she isn't straining, it sounds higher to these ears.

the bad ...

-her vibrato has two options: on and off. she doesn't have any control over the intensity and she uses it in inappropriate places, which makes certain passages sound forced. her delivery is incongruous with the lyrics at times.

the ugly ...

-it's a shame this was locked away for so long, and
-she doesn't sing like this in concert, nor does she consistently sing like this on records.

but the bottom line is that i would rank this up there with TISL, it's only love, and whenever i call you friend. it's that good.

I don't think Mama has ever had control over her vibrato, but I think that is part of her charm and makes her so distinct- it's her trademark. Nobody sings like her. Usually, as singers age, the vibrato starts to slow down and wobble. But Mama still warbles like a canary- it's amazing, actually. If anything, I think it would be rather unfortunate if she controlled her vibrato too well- it would make her so conventional and indistinct, IMHO.

Agreed. But it would have stuck out on TISL like a sore thumb. I just wonder how many other songs were recorded for TISL- as it is, we have "Space Needle," "Annabelle Lee," "Have No Heart," "My Heart," "Thrown Down," and now this song. That's already half of a new album right there! And Buddah knows what is sitting around in Rodney Jerkins' and Dallas Austin's garage?

I am noticing that Stevie is singing a couple of falsetto "ooh... ooohs" at the beginning of "Sara" these days, but other than that, she is belting as usual. I suspect that given the loudness of rock concerts and Mama's likely hearing loss, she probably can't hear herself well enough to sing softly, even though it's obvious that she still has it. And unfortunately, she is so concerned with songs translating well to the live setting, that she tends to record her songs with the stage in mind.

This song (music and lyrics) is just terrible. It's terrible because it blatantly swipes words, intervals and melodies from so many much better songs - Follow Me (Lerner/Lowe), for one. 'Borrowing' with skill and finesse is part of the creative process, this song borrows from so many others without skill or finesse. Also, it's almost pandering to this particular singer..., "oh stevie, it's about unwinding and magic and stuff that's, like, you, and stuff like that".

That she actually had to learn the words and timing of this not-so-simply-constructed stew of crap AMAZES me...of all of the songs out there she chose this one.

Yeah, she sang it fine, but, come on...

i get what you're saying. it don't dislike her vibrato categorically, there are just a few places it didn't sound right to me.

Agreed. But it would have stuck out on TISL like a sore thumb.

oh, it wouldn't have fit at all on TISL, nor would it have fit on SYW. but i think it could have worked great at a benefit or on a movie soundtrack. i just think it's rare that we get a vocal from her that is this controlled & vulnerable, so strong & understated.

OMGWTF!!!! Whether or not you like this Torch style, Standards etc. There is no denying this is one of Stevie's best vocals since the mid 80's i.e. HAEWAFY!!! or anything before RAL! I love her nuanced, controlled vocal..and her falsetto is simply irresistible (comparable to "Whenever I call you Friend"). It's been what we have been missing from Miss Nicks since her heyday!!! (except when S. Crow coaxed it out of her for "Sorcerer") I cannot believe my ears!!!

I personally love the song, and am of the opinion that Stevie should go this route on her next solo outing, ever since she mentioned that she would love to work with David Foster on a Standards recording, back when she was on the Today Show promoting CV.

I believe it would be a critical and commercial triumph for Stevie (along the lines of Natalie Cole's "Unforgettable", Robert Plant & Alison Krauss, KD Lang's "Hymns on 49th" etc. And finally put to rest the nay Sayers who say that Stevie is not a capable or relevant vocalist, who is able to sing practically any genre (country, blues, standards, pop, rock, r&b, dance.)

Blown away. I think it is nearly magnificent. I'm so thrilled that Stevie stretched herself; really in an entirely unexpected direction, and that she can still create something so striking. I even like the dreamy movieland orchestration sound to the music, and I really like that she did such an exquisite job singing it. I think it ranks as a superior effort to much of what we have heard from her in some time, which i don't mean to sound as a left-handed compliment. To be fair to SN, we really haven't heard much new in quite some time, if not a long time. It makes me remember why I loved her as an artisan, and even though I've long hoped for her to deliver a new, totally rocking classic, I am very, very impressed by how she delivered the goods on this track. She has to keep singing new material, it will revitalize her as much as it would us.
The one thing i think would make this song become a standard has to do with a choice the songwriter made, though it's a darn good song- But my choice would be to change it to "Call On You For Magic" or "Calling You For Magic" --- odd?
Here's why- In the first verse, we learn that "some sorceror broke your heart"--so to get over the bad love affair, 'call on me for magic'...
I think it would be way more beautiful and MUCH more of a love song to remind the broken-hearted one that there is still magic within him, despite of the sorceror; and to say to someone "i need your magic" strikes me as far more romantic than "you need my magic" and to essentially say "I see the magic you possess, no matter how badly you were hurt, it's something no sorceror could take away" is irresistable, whereas "see, the magic I can give you?" somehow less acknowledges the treasure that this person's love would mean. I think this would give the song the correct emotional impact, they are so close to having something great...
I still think it's excellent, though. The rest of the lyric could remain as is, it still would 'make sense.'
"Calling You For Magic"--
-plus, the romanticism of Stevie Nicks singing that someone else, rather than herself, is magic, would make the song perfect.

this is absolutely beautiful...i think if she did an entire album of music like this she would gain an entirely new audience and very much satisfy her existing fans...this blew me away!!! i heard the first line and thought: "oh God..this is aweful.." then i listened to the whole thing and REALLY enjoyed it once I opened up MY mind..BRAVO Stevie Nicks...now i wish someone on her "management team" would encourage her to take a %$^&ing risk and record it and release it!! Beauty And The Beast would have been a a HUGE hit as well as a beautiful video..."Sister Honey" would have been a top 10 "disco hit" in it's day..."Ooh My Love" ..another potential HUGE hit..her advisors stink...they keep her sooooo conservative that her fullest potential as an artist has not even been fully exposed to the public. Only her die hard fans REALLY know what she is capable of...Stevie Nicks..if u r reading this...hire me..i will have u back on top 10 billboard hits in 3 months....1/2 kidding..but come on...take the risk..what have u got to lose?? I say this w/extreme respect and love for her music and her personally!!

oh wow, i don't agree at all. i don't think the song is saying "you need my magic." it's saying you've been hurt, so if you need some strength, you can draw on mine. it's an expression of availability and support, not an implication that the listener is weak. not even the strongest person can function in a vacuum.

besides, most of the best love songs are just a little bit codependent

this is a rare POV for stevie to take, and i like it. she's not playing wounded, and she's not singing about herself. it's a nice change.

Kay, well here's what I got for lyrics. Let me know whatcha think, and where I should separate them. :]

Emotions... disappearing
And your dreams all.. vaporize
Another love has come and gone...
But, that's no surprise
Some Sorcerer has touched you...
Placed his hands upon your soul
Stays until your feelings lose control
Oh, a kind of strange enchantment...
Holds you captive in your mind
I can't find the magic, of the ocean to unwind
Call on me for magic
Call on me to break the spell...
That holds your heart away so easily
Call and let me hypnotize your sorrow with my song (Could also be sun...)
Call on me for magic,
Call on me.
Your peace of mind deserts you....
In a place you don't belong...
Don't sit and stare at emptiness till (too?)
Nothing comes along
Let me try and show you...
That your fantasy's not true
That love is not for everyone...
But you...
Oh, what kind of strange enchantment...
Holds you captive, in your mind
I can't find the magic of the ocean to unwind
Call on me on magic
Call on me to break the spell
That holds your heart away so easily
Call and let me hypnotize your sorrow with my song
Call on me for magic...
Call on me
Call on me
Call on me
Call on me...

As an aside, does anyone remember the story about David Kahne convincing Susanna Hoffs to record a track stark naked during a session with The Bangles, assuring her that the vocal would sound equally bare? Apparently he attempted the same trick with Olivia Newton-John soon afterwards but didn't have as much luck coaxing her into submission. I wonder if this is how he elicited the "vulnerability" in Stevie's delivery with this recording?

Well, considering David Kahne is a douchebag, I wouldn't put anything past him.

I e-mailed David Kahne asking if this was the only track (besides Love Changes) that they worked on to make sure there weren't any other hidden gems he had. He said these were the only two, and that stevie sang this song for him as a favor.

I emailed David and this is what he told me

Hi Anthony. Glad you like the song, and the performance. No one has ever commented on it before. It was just a one-off that she sang for me so I could have a version of the song.

Thanks for the props,
david

So it seems it is a one of a kind. No other hidden gems.

If you all DO email him, make sure you thank him not only for allowing you to listen to it, but also for the fact he wrote it, produced it and did such a great job getting a great vocal out of her. This is truly one of her best non-FM studio performances out there and nobody has done that since Jimmy Iovine and maybe S. Crow. Remember its NOT always about Stevie!

Thank you for Call On Me For Magic! Stevie Nicks' online fans are going crazy for this. I don't know much about music, but it seems Stevie has a small range-but she seems to stretch herself in this song. Are you as pleased with this song as we are? Also, kudos for being a great song-writer-I never knew you wrote songs as well as all the great work with a diverse group of artists. Thanks again for sharing this gem.
Sincerely, Ricoh Vigen

his response:
Hi Ricoh. Yes, Stevie did really stretch on Magic. When I was working with her on Changes I realized she could stretch like that if she had a big melody, and I thought of that song. I write lots of stuff, but don't ever show it to anyone. Mostly I stick to the ballets I write, which are up on my site too. All instrumental... Glad you like the song. And I was very lucky to have Stevie sing it. She's so sweet...
cheers,
david

Is anyone thinking what I am thinking? Hound Nicksfix and tell them to tell Stevie to hire David as the producer for her next album of all original music co-written by the two of them!!!! He can write the music, and she can write the lyrics and he can get her to "stretch" and make a lovely little album. Hell, even if it is only release by Rhino records on iTunes it would sell!

I'll reserve my opinion until I hear a viable followup single that revolves around a mystical unicorn.

Does Kahne have it in him? Let's find out! YES WE CAN! YES WE CAN!

Well AnthonyMI, I passed along your response in another e-mail to him. Wouldn't it be wild if enough fan interest and correspondence actually spurred it to happen? Fat chance, I know, but heres to trying...Cheers, Ricoh

Is it? I just realized that I listen to TISL all the time because it's one of my faves but I always listen to the demos and outtakes and not the released CD. I guess I should revisit that CD.

Thanks Luke for posting this, interesting song, not sure it would have fit on TISL, but why will Stevie not record primarily a covers album with this type of song as well, she seems to love singing covers live (Crash, Rock n'Roll and that Bonnie Raitt number, cannot remember that song name)

Shame that Stevie feels that she cannot record a new studio album at the moment for whatever her reasons are

Whilst I quite like this track and I'm impressed by the vocal range on display, we should not assume that this is indicative of Stevie's current capabilities. I have every confidence in Stevie and believe she is still capable of a certain range (certainly more than she cares to offer these days), but we shouldn't forget that she is nearly 61 years old.
I don't know the exact timeframe of this recording but I guess it's safe to assume it was done around the same time of "Love Changes". Considering that sessions for the Trouble In Shangri-La album occurred between December 1998 and September 2000, we're most probably looking at this recording being around 10 years old. Does anyone know anything more specific? Perhaps Mr Khane could clue us in with the precise details?
That said, I think it's fantastic that she attempted something so far removed from her comfort zone, especially since it was done as a favour, and actually pulled it off. The song itself is nothing special and this cabaret, show-tune genre is not one of my favourites, but her performance definitely draws you in. What's lovely is that she doesn't seem to be straining and although the melody is a little complicated, she makes it sound almost effortless, with a certain fragility intact. That is no mean feat. I admire Khane's work but this particular production is a little on the schlocky side in my opinion. However, that just reinforces the quality of Stevie's delivery, rescuing it from total schmaltz.

love this little ditty. it's so nice to hear a Broadway-esque sound from our little witchy dumpling. I think everything is fabulous except the clunky arrangement. I wish there were some type of build up or great bridge or something, but overall, it's great.

Stunning.

She should do this more often and stop selling the same drone she does on the likes of Dreams and Rhiannon these days.

I think she still has this voice, she just rarely uses it for some reason, which may be good, but we'll never know it.

This song, while not that great, really underscores my frustration with Stevie's vocal style these days. This track proves that she can still summon up that breathy quality and falsetto when she tries. I don't think her voice has changed too much from when this was recorded. One piece of evidence is the Deep Dish version of "Dreams", with falsetto intact (although I have my suspicions that the song was actually recorded in a lower key and pitch/speed corrected digitally).

Why, why why does she chose to use the belting/droning approach almost exclusively now?!? I can understand that at her age she doesn't have the full range that she had in her 20s and 30s, but that could be compensated for by varying the dynamics and exploring different aspects of her voice within that decreased range.

I have theory that the voice coaching may actually be having a detrimental effect on her performances...it sounds like she is aiming for full vocal control, and the only way she feels comfortable doing that is singing from the gut at all times, rather than varying it with a head voice or falsetto at times.

If she were singing "Dreams" or "Sara" with this style these days, I would pay good money to see FM in a heartbeat.

Agreed. She obviously has the voice still. I'm mystified as to why she does not use it. Her technique has become a thousand times better in the last ten years with the vocal coach.

I agree - and, the "Red River Valley" cover, taped last month or so, proves that. Listen to her go soft in the same range at 1:38 and 3:46 (and, the one who has loved you so true) ----

<object width="480" height="295"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/fOFVrDAnrGc&hl=en&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/fOFVrDAnrGc&hl=en&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="480" height="295"></embed></object>

Also, her vocals on this tour are spot on, esp. the very cool harmony on Monday Morning. Also, she is adding upper register accents of Sara.

La Nicks still has it, she just needs to show it more often by doing things that interest her, RRV on the CI show

I've seen that a couple of times captured on the YouTube vids.... and she almost does it like she's shy, or is slightly embarrassed afterwards because of the little smile she gives... and it's close to not even being heard unless you watch and listen closely.

I really liked it. Her vocal is amazing on this. She talked a few years ago about doing a "blues standards" album which she may or may not have been serious about, but if she ever does another album, I think it should be a standards or Broadway CD - with the right producer, she could pull off something amazing, I think. Maybe something like Marianne Faithfull's "Strange Weather" album.
