I watch a lot of movies, so I thought I'd start a thread where we
list the recent movies we've rented.

This week's movies....

Australia (good).
The Secret Life Of Bees (pretty good).
Wanted (ok, at best).
Nights in Rodanthe (a bad version of Message In A Bottle).
WALL-E (disappointing).
The Dark Knight (good, better than expected).

So what did you watch this week?

Have not ben feeling well-so it's a great time to lay on the couch and watch movies, and shows...We have a DVR so I can tape shows also and Comcast has a pay per view $4.99 that seems like a fair price-
Anyway, I have watched 4 episodes of HOUSE as well as CSI-Vegas, so now I am caught up.
Movies:

The Happening-unimpressed scary but silly too, at least you can look at "Marky-Mark haha"

An American Haunting- Very good older movie Sissy Spacek, Donald Sutherland
scary, edge of your seat movies I love those, not tat slashers

88- Al Pacino- Excellent edge of your seat movie, Highly recommend

Rightous Kill- Pacino and DiNiro, again excellent edge of your seat-

Glasss House- older film , Lealee Sobinski (SP) spooky atmosphere, drama, it was good.

I got lucky on my choices

Great movie. I saw the live musical at the Dorothy Chandler LA Music Center in the 80's. 17 year old Emma Rossum was fantastic. I wonder what ever happened to her? Anybody ever see her in another film?

I saw Casino Royale and Swordfish for the first time this week.
Casino Royale -- brilliant in every sense, Daniel Craig is a fantastic Bond and I've been listening non-stop to the theme song all week.
Swordfish -- very enjoyable but the ending really confused me. :o!

A few more movies.....

Twighlight, Aren't vampire movies supposed to be scary?
Did anybody esle laugh when they did the "piggyback ride" up the
mountain? Or the tree climb? If those parts had been left on the
cutting room floor, it would have been a better movie.

Righteous Kill, With two of my favorite actors Pacino and
De Niro I expected more. I found it a bit boring. Maybe if they'd
played these roles about fifteen years ago it would have been more
believable.

Fireproof, A good Christian message with this movie. But the
acting was bad overall.

Let's see - in the last week:

Slumdog Millionaire - god bless you, Danny Boyle, for being so freakin' versatile.

No Country for Old Men - I was wary, because I am a major Cormac McCarthy disciple, but the Coens did okay.

Burn After Reading - Was not earth-shaking, but was fun - also, John Malkovich with a hatchet? Yes please.

Audition - I always use this film to introduce the uninitiated to the wonders of Miike. Good times, good times.

Not a movie, but I also watched some <i>Carnivale</i>, because I never get tired of the brilliance that was that show.

Yes, the very one. So brilliant.

It won't come back, I don't think, but I wish it would. It breaks my heart we only got 2 seasons. To me, that show is an example of what TV can be when it tries.

I'm not as crazy over Deadwood, but that was a great show, too - I think it's easier to get over the loss of that one because if you want to know what happened, you can go read it in a book. Not the same for Brother Justin & Ben. Sigh.

more DVD's......

Pride And Glory, Good movie. Some of it's hard to watch.
Edward Norton and Colin Farrell did a good job on this movie.

Recent movies I watched (mostly on blu-ray):

Let The Right One In
Best film of 2008
Elegy
Turned out better than I thought it would be and Ben Kingsley and Penelope Cruz are very believable.
Slumdog Millionaire
Pretty good, not sure it is worth Best Picture. Kudos for truly depicting India as the filthy cess pool it is. The big cities are really dirty.
Bolt
Cute, but typical Disney fare.
Quarantine
This is just plain fun and kind of freaky.
Night Watch
Day Watch
Both these films are high-speed, non-stop Russian weirdness. Love them both. Looks fab on blu too.
Tell No One
Awesome thriller from France.

Hi guys! Been a while, huh?

Funny, I was on vacation last week, and watched a boat load of movies. Sara and I have been wanting to watch The Boy in the Striped Pajamas for the longest time now. Wasn't too bad. The ending was surprising and bittersweet. We weren't disappointed. Samantha and I both love Coming to America... oldie but a goodie. I made her watch Mississippi Burning, which has always been a favorite of mine. Anyhow, back to the new ones... Mall Cop was a let down. Didn't enjoy that one too much at all. Bride Wars was another let down in my opinion. Both just weren't as funny as I expected.

Let The Right One In
Best film of 2008

Quarantine
This is just plain fun and kind of freaky.

I agree, Let the Right One In was my favorite film of 2008. The film made dozens of top ten/critic's lists. Unfortunately, the just-released U.S. DVD features a new Americanized translation, different from what played in theaters. The company that released the DVD has responded to heavy protest and is releasing the original English subtitles. The "new" version added sex jokes, etc. Still, a full U.S. remake is coming from the director of Cloverfield. Let the Right One In is one of the greatest vampire films. It starts out somewhat dry, but let it work it's dark magic.

Quarantine is a near shot-for-shot remake (right down to set design) of the 2008 Spanish horror film [REC], which is short for "record." [REC] 2 is coming. Sony is finally releasing [REC] on DVD later this year. It's a tighter film than the U.S. remake, which is 15 minutes longer than the Spanish version, which is a gripping 75 minutes.

Doubt

Meryl Streep, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Amy Adams and the rest of the cast were phenomenal. The movie was about an hour and 45 minutes long and ended too quickly. All that great dialogue and drama and the ending made it seem like the bell rang and everyone had to go home before they could figure out how to end the movie.

Doubt - Amazing film with great performances all around and a script that will not allow you to sit back and be a casual observer. As for the way it ended, I'm not sure how anybody could really expect to get answers from a movie called Doubt. Sister Aloysius had her suspicions but no solid proof to support them and the viewer is left with the same.

The Tale Of Desperaux - Cute and far more cheery than the novel on which it's based, but a bit disjointed.

Changeling - A bit disappointing actually. Good performances and a strong cast, with a fair amount of suspense, but it just didn't grab me the way I'd hoped it would.

State Of Play - Lots of action, suspense and a surprising amount of humor. Russell Crowe turns in a great performance and, as usual, commands the screen.

It was fantastic. I saw the play on Broadway and remember the doc. I felt so sorry for Little Edie and, in a way, for Big Edie. Interestingly, it appears the South does not have exclusive rights to faded beauty stuck on a plantation per Tennessee Williams

A few more over the past couple of weeks.....

Let The Right One In. This will scare you! The English over-dubs
were horrible. Pretty good vampire movie.......FREAKY.

The Duchess. Rented this for someone else, but it was good if you
like these period pieces.

Jewel, The Essential Live Songbook Disc 1 & 2. These two concerts
are absolutely great. Joe Thomas produced these Soundstage concerts. If
you think he did a good job with Stevie Nicks, watch these and you'll wonder
why couldn't Stevie's have been released this way. Two seperate concerts,
interview and bonus video. And the Blu-ray version includes extra concert
video recorded at Red Rocks (I believe). I'll be buying the Blu-ray version.

Nick And Norah's Infinite Playlist. Liked the two main actors, but the
movie was pretty lame.

Role Models. Why did I waste my time. Very crude movie as one
would expect.

Rachel Getting Married. One bad movie. Has Anne Hathaway been
in a good movie???

The Road Home. Pretty good movie if you don't mind reading subtitles.

Ladies And Gentlemen, The Fabulous Stains. Somehow I had missed this
movie, as it was made in 1982(?). I liked it, kind of a Pat Benatar, Blondie, and
Go Go's type theme. Plus I like Diane Lane.

The Last Word. Winona Ryder stars in this one. It was an interesting
movie, very different. But they lost what made the movie stand out as being
different and went with a Hollywood ending. Why?!!

The Wrestler. Very good movie. Mickey Rourke does a wonderful job
with this role.

Cadillac Records. Very good movie. Great music. They get the dates
(years) wrong in some parts of the movie, but overall it doesn't hurt the movie.

Step Brothers. Some funny parts, but very crude.

My Best Friend's Girl. A big waste of time. I wonder if Dane Cook could
go 5 minutes without cursing? Kate Hudson should have passed on this one.

This week: Breakfast at Tiffany's (much better, thank you. OMG the party scene... LOL! the drunk lady laughing inthe mirror and then bawling her eyes out, mascara running down her face.)

Coming up: What's Up Doc?

Blake Edwards puts a bum carbuncle on many of his movies, like "The Party" & "The Great Race," by stretching the gimmick out well beyond what feels initially very funny, & continually coming back to motifs until all else has been crowded out from your mind. He's the Wagner of film farceurs.

Yeah I mean Sellers is at his best and you're thinking that this was a great laugh and wondering how they're going to finish it off and then...wtf it just keeps going, elephants, hippies, bubbles invading the house....way way too far and Sellers isn't even necessary, had absolutely no continuity with the first part. Just like some kiddies film tacked on to the end that happens to have Peter Sellers in it but could be anyone.

I just returned The Party and got out the australin film Chopper with Eric Bana and that was so good. He was beyond great but geez Melbourne doesn't seem as great anymore!

I am so behind on my Movie thread...

First, I bought and watched Breakfast at Tiffany's, because I just love that movie and always will.

Next, just to temporarily break my nostalgia binge, I rented The Reader. Had to watch it twice because I got too hung up on the love scenes the first time around. After watching the interviews and director's comments and then viewing the movie for a second time, I caught a better drift of the story and it was truly poignant. Winslet was stunning with her German accent. Quite the heartbreaking ending.

The other night I downloaded Streetcar Named Desire. I'd never seen that movie before and it had fabulous acting also. Looked a little low-budget, but who cares. I can almost see Blanche's influence on several actresses and celebrities. Has that movie ever been colorized? It was great in black and white. I didn't think I'd like it in black and white, but I really did.

Next up: Wait Until Dark.

... and the binge continues.

PS: I didn't care for What's Up Doc. Too much slapstick.

You mean in the set or production design? The movie was one of the major Warner Bros. productions of that year: highly anticipated & heavily advertised. Took three Academy Awards for acting at the Oscars. The low-budget look you sense was possibly the deliberately tawdry set design for the Old Quarter? The crumbling facade -- the Old South vs. the New South -- is one of the big themes in the play.

I can almost see Blanche's influence on several actresses and celebrities. Has that movie ever been colorized? I've never seen it colorized. I don't think TBS or TNT ever bothered.

I understood the tawdry set design was purposeful to create a certain look for the old quarter. Whenever I see a movie that consists of only a handful of sets, I call it low-budget because I imagine they didn't spend a lot of money on a several different set designs or for location travel. Street Car basically had the apartment, outside the apartment and the streetcar for scenes. Granted, you didn't need any more to tell the tale, but I still call them low-budget. I have Old Man in the Sea in my queue too. If I remember correctly, that one didn't have a lot of different sets or locations, but a wonderfuly told and acted story nonetheless. It's what I love about those old movies... leaves more to the imagination.

I watched Wait Until Dark and enjoyed it quite a bit. There was more time spent setting up the story about the drug dealers than I remembered, but the scary apartment scene was every bit of frightening as it was last time I saw it years ago. Not to mention, I just love Audrey Hepburn's acting anyway.

Next up is Splendor in the Grass with Natalie Wood and Warren Beatty and/or On the Waterfront with Marlon Brando.

It depends on the movie and your approach to it. I've taught several of those types of classes, although I prefer to use Rear Window for teaching. Having studied film for years (just finishing phD right now) Hitchcock is often a great way to introduce students to film studies after giving them an introduction via more current stuff. Psycho is of course always used too.

There are several ways to approch it. Either you just discuss the techincal elements, camera movement, framing etc, and how they contribute to the film... or you talk more about the history of the film and studio industry at that point, or Hitchcock's repeated use of the same techniques and how his work can be identified...or you can get into a major discussion about "proper" film theory and psychoanalysis etc (which was very in vogue in the 50s and 60s). That's the stuff that can turn a lot of people off though, for very good reason! Of course the best way is to consider all these at the same time and focus on one or two of them...

If you seriously do want to study him then pm me and I will happily answer any questions you may have and provide you with a watching/vieiwing list and give you some notes on the key films - it will get you ahead in whatever couirse you take! Of course if you're just after general information and noa qualification or anything then I can just discuss them with you via pm if you want and save you taking a course at all.

Sorry, that made me sound abit full of myself there!

Neil Diamond "Hot August Night NYC".

I just watched the new John Boorman movie: The Tiger's Tail. Relegated to a straight-to-DVD release, it is the best film by this GIANT of filmmaking in over a decade (and I was moved by the cathartic In My Country). If it weren't so wise and elegant, I'd say it exhibits the youthful inventiveness of his Catch Us If You Can (yes, greater than A Hard Day's Night), while updating his complicated, humane view of Capitalism in Where the Heart Is (post-Reagan, pre-Clinton, it went unheeded) to the Obama era. Its insights into the human eternal adrift in the political-economic present couldn't be more urgently needed. Deep, mysterious, fun, funny, The Tiger's Tail swirls with intellectual romance and primal emotions, from its teeming traffic-jam opening to its final boat-trip punchline.

It joins Julian Hernandez's Raging Sun, Raging Sky and Andre Techine's The Girl On The Train as the best new movies I've seen this year -- all (thus far) unreleased theatrically in the United States.

Just felt I should re-post the above, especially as I now learn that Apres Luis has just been released straight to DVD. A Gael Morel film: straight-to-dvd!?!? This is officially a cinema crisis. SERIOUSLY: SEE THE TIGER'S TAIL!

Meanwhile, I caught up on some movies this weekend. Saw David R. Ellis' The Final Destination 3D, which was stupid and ludicrous. . . especially after the soulful Final Destination 3 by James Wong. Ellis is, officially, a hack who is nothing without Larry Cohen (screenwriter of Cellular). Ellis tries to get all racial here but he conflates critiquing racism with class bias, and Black perserverence with Black pathology (a ludicrous characterization) -- and deflates--buries--these matters with unimaginative shocks.

Also watched Watchmen. Unlike Ellis, director Zack Snyder is no hack. His mastery of cgi made visionary the fascist abstractions of 300; but here Snyder gets Fascism--and, more importantly, comic books--all wrong by taking too seriously the graphic novel's pseudo-intellectual approach to comic book mythology. It's better than The Dark Knight (of course) but it also shows us from whence The Dark Knight sprang.

The DVD of the remake of Black Christmas: well-cast (Andrea Martin! Mary Elizabeth Winstead!!) and well-made (by Glen Morgan), but this unpleasant movie's sick Christmas twist (warding off evil spirits in the righteous climax confuses paganism with Christianity. . . or does it?) seemed removed from the real-world anxiety that grounded Morgan's previous horror remake, Willard, via the uncanny--unforgettable--use of Michael Jackson's "Ben".

For more on MJ, Willard, and "Ben," check out Armond White's new book KEEP MOVING: THE MICHAEL JACKSON CHRONICLES (http://www.resistanceworks.blogspot.com).

The first 30 minutes bored me to death and I considered leaving. Then I told myself I wanted to get my money's worth so I stayed.
Then it got good and stayed good for a while and then it , well it just got plain ole stupid, but it was cute.

Then it got good and stayed good for a while and then it , well it just got plain ole stupid, but it was cute.
Wouldn't go see it again though.
On a scale of 1-10 I'd give it a 4.
Everyone in the movie theatre as we were leaving just had a duh look on our faces.

yeah I don't know what I thought. Did you see the short film Alive in Joburg? I saw that years ago and was fascinated by it and when I saw the preview for this I was soooo excited like it was dying to be made, the perfect plot line. But it's nowhere near as good as Alive in Joburg. Maybe the idea is fascinating but when it's played out for 2 hours it's not as exciting as the idea. I don't know but I might getting to meet peter jackson but I won't mention that! I loved seeing a film set in joburg though for a change!

Ok, I just saw RESIDENT EVIL: EXTINCTION & I didn't think much of it. It all looked like a commercial for Gillette hi-tech razor, because all the men had afternoon shadows & all the women had some hair in their armpits. Even the zombies were growing a lot of facial hair. The film also had the usual amount of unbelievability (guy being chased by zombie birds runs to the safety of a bus, but instead of hauling his ass through the door & shutting it -- which is what a real person would have done -- he stops for a few moments in order to turn around & fire off a useless round or two at twelve gazillion birds) & cartoonish action (chop-suey fighting with zombies until one smart chap finally had the brains to get a flame-thrower).

These dumber-than-dumb action flicks always use the same color palette, too. Have you noticed? Everything is the same steely-gray & two or three shades of abiotic green.

The film is also a barrage of film references: THE BIRDS, PLANET OF THE APES, DAWN OF THE DEAD, MAD MAX, THE MATRIX, ALIENS, TREMORS, & on & on & on & on. But not a single reference was deft or clever. I think there were more references than zombies at one point.

This stupidity was directed by Russell Mulcahy, who used to direct videos for MTV (including Fleetwood Mac's GYPSY). His filmography tells an interesting moral story: He has never made a decent picture & shows no signs of ever doing so. Who gives him money?

I disagree.

Ricochet is an amazing movie that uncannily captures the temper of its moment; Mulcahy's wide-screen compositions vivify the times in that movie. I thrill to it often.

I saw a movie last night with Julianne Moore and Hugh Grant - I forget the title but it was a nice romantic comedy. Had Robin Williams in it too.

Anyway - - - I already knew that there was "something about" Juliane Moore but o.m.g. - - - She was STUNNING when she was young! Even Hugh Grant was like - "OHHHhhh wow!" - you could "just tell." (i.m.o., of course.)

Anyway - Yeah - wow!!! :blob2:

Finally time to catch up on some movies.

Public Enemies. Thought it was good. Why do we always pull for the bad guys?

Star Trek. About as lame as the old TV show, but with awesome sound.

Passengers. Liked this one very much. First Anne Hathaway movie that I've liked.

Vicki Cristina Barcelona. Penelope Cruz and Scarlett Johansson....eye candy.

Doubt. Hard to watch, but very good acting.

Frost/Nixon. Very interesting political movie.

The Taking of Pelham 123. If you like hearing the "F" word rent this.

Last Chance Harvey. I don't have children, but a few scenes will make you
hurt for Dustin Hoffman's charecter.

The Corpse Bride. I bought this on Blu ray disc and it looks and sounds awesome.

I've rewatched some of my all-time favorite movies in the last two or so weeks:

Stardust Memories: Probably my favorite film of all time, even if just for one scene of the entire movie.
8 1/2: I don't think a lot of people would argue that this is the best film to ever come out of Italy.
An Education: Awesome movie. It might still be in theaters, although you'd have to really look... only our local CineArts played it.
Dead Poet's Society: The writer in me dies a little bit every time I watch this movie. Why is this not my life? Why can't I walk around my school quoting Tennyson all the time? Oh wait, I do.... its just that I get laughed at.
Doubt: We actually watched this in my Christian Vocations class last week, even though I've seen in multiple times before that. My teacher's intention in showing the film was definitely not pro-Catholic, so a nice little classroom "debate" erupted afterward. :) Meryl Streep is perfect.
The English Patient: Not one of my favorites by a long shot, but I did watch this after reading the book.... in comparison to how unbelievably perfect the novel is, the movie was disappointing. So if you like the movie, READ THE BOOK.

What would be my pick for greatest movie to come out of Italy? L'Avventura! (Though when I was her age, my favorite was Shoeshine.)

As for appropriate hyperbole, I think one could argue this: 8-1/2 is the most beautiful black-and-white movie of the 60s!!!!

A few more movies........

Inglourious Basterds. I thought I would like this Quentin Tarantino
movie because I'd liked the Kill Bill series, and Death Proof. But
I was wrong. What a waist of time. I did like some of the music, like Bowie's
"Cat People" (Putting Out The Fire). Tarantino's strength seems to be bloody
death scenes and music.

Inkheart. Didn't really expect to like this fantasy movie (kind of begs
the question, why would I rent movie(s) that I don't think I'll like). But it turned
out to be very entertaining. The movie made me want to read a book, and I guess

I'm currently trying to work my way through Grapes of Wrath, but the disk skips in several places, so have to send it back for a new one and try again. I've enjoyed what I've seen so far. Couldn't help but think of The Beverly Hillbillies as they drove that loaded down pick up truck across the country to Calif. on Route 66. Senses of Cinema invited me to participate in their annual poll again this year. Thought my "ballot" might interest The Ledge:

By far the best new movie I saw in '09, Rabioso sol, rabioso cielo (Raging Sun, Raging Sky, Julian Hernandez, 2009) also rightfully owns the number 3 spot on the Best of ‘00s list. However, the film distribution-and-critical hegemony keeps the movie from reaching the audience it deserves. Hernandez seemingly recognizes his circumstance in the film-cult machine: the era's best new filmmaker relegated to the cinema's gay ghetto (currently his RSRS is available only for festival rentals). Yet, his work does not fit any "gay movie" conventions (lazy critics compare him to the early 1990s New Queer Cinema when Antonioni and Ophuls would be more apt). So in a subversive modernist twist--a relatively minor detail in the film's teeming nexus--Hernandez decorates a porn theater box office with promo stills from his own short Bramadero (an erotic meditation on death). Significantly: "bramadero" means "tethering post." Although restricted by film-cult hegemony (effectively: censorship), Hernandez's unabashed gay erotic content ties him to a deeper (resistance) gay/art legacy.

Let's break down the multivalent significance of the self-referential use of Bramadero stills in Raging Sun, Raging Sky:

1. Hernandez's frank treatment of sexuality addresses the Desire (sexual/spiritual) exploited by grindhouse cinema, while also recognizing that it provides a space for the social expression of Desire by members of a marginalized group
2. Hernandez does not see his films as "above" grindhouse movies, but as part of a particular, sub-cultural history of art-cinema distribution and exhibition
3. Hernandez highlights and subverts the ghetto-ized nature of his own films (relegated to specialty audiences, yet actually expansive in their treatment of the human condition)

It begs the question: To what tethering post is NYC's gaggle of gay film critics chained? (Raise your hand if you were at the lone NYC festival screening of Raging Sun, Raging Sky.)

The following lists one person's genuine appraisal of time spent at the movies. In the spirit of Hernandez's audacious proposition of the movie theater as the site where love is found (and compassion developed)--I give Raging Sun, Raging Sky its place on the decade list. Should the U.S. be blessed by its official release in 2010, it will rule that year and set the standard for the next decade as well.

Wait Until Dark.

I hadn't seen it in about ten years and forgot how good it is.
It's a fantastic, classic suspense story and Audrey Hepburn is amazing as usual.

Apparently when this sucker was shown on the big screen back in the late '60s, the theatre management would close all doors and even turn off the aisle lights in the final twenty minutes for the full effect.

I saw three movies this weekend:

It's Complicated
Up in the Air
Did You Hear About The Morgans?

I recommend them in that order.

While It's Complicated isn't a script masterpiece and is a bit predictable, it provided many laughs. I left the movie feeling it was a good RomCom and when it ends up on TBS or USA, i'll drop what I'm doing at that moment to watch it for the umpteenth time.

I did like Up in the Air -- but found it sort of depressing -- like in the About Schmidt way. One of those movies that makes you question what you have done with your life. I walked out of there thinking hmmm...maybe i really need to make some good resolutions for 2010. But also on the upside, I got to stare at George Clooney for 2 hours.

And the last one -- I didn't hate it. But all the good scenes were in the trailers.

I was shocked at how similar the plot of "Up In The Air" was to "About Schmidt", and not just in the "both are set in Omaha" way. It almost seemed kind of forced, in a "homage" kind of way, since it would have made perfect sense for Ryan (George Clooney) to be based out of AA hub STL.

Well, after learning a little more, I discovered the screenplay was adapted from a book based on a real guy who had a place in Atlanta. Guess the screenwriters must have been looking to tap into a bit more of average everyday America given the state of the economy and what the character did for a living in order to affect a larger audience. Maybe? Who knows. But without giving anything away for those who want to see it, I do recall one scene where there was a comparison to a big city vs. Omaha and it was at Omaha's expense. So the more I think about it, it was overtly intentional to pick a relatively small city I guess. Well, and that they try to make it obvious that it didn't matter where this guy physically lived. His home was in the sky.

AA certainly paid some big dollars for it's promo placement. I have a friend who actually just left her job where she worked those types of deals for movies, commercials, etc. for another airline. It's all a big deal supposedly and the airline has people on set to ensure that the airline is being portrayed in a good light. Although, i'm not sure the airline can suggest that a screenwriter change a plot line to fit with where an airline's hub happens to be. Cause I agree someone who flew 350k a year certainly didn't fly direct flights to everywhere from Omaha.

The English Patient: I've heard alot about this movie and so i decided to watch it and im happy i did..(bonus: Naveen Andrews is in it )..i hear theres a book..when i am no longer broke i will run to borders or books a million to get it.

It is, HANDS DOWN, my favorite book of all time. Seriously, I'm obsessed. READ IT.

"We die containing a richness of lovers and tribes, tastes we have swallowed, bodies we have plunged into and swum up as if rivers of wisdom, characters we have climbed into as if trees, fears we have hidden in as if caves. I wish for all this to be marked on my body when I am dead. I believe in such cartography- to be marked by nature, not just to label ourselves on a map like the names of rich men and women on buildings. We are communal histories, communal books. We are not owned or monogamous in our taste or experience. All I desired was to walk upon such an earth that had no maps."

Michael Ondaatje, I am obsessed with you.

I saw Nine last night and loved it, but be warned: I do exceptionally well with slow movies and Fellini's 8 1/2 is one of my favorite movies of all time, so I understood all of the references to that film. So really, I was destined to love it haha.

The Ramen Girl.

I had this movie in my cart before Brittany Murphy passed away.
I don't even remember what led me to this movie. And when it
arrived today, I really didn't know what to expect.

I liked the movie but it was hard to distance myself from what
happened to her. I kept having to go backwards on the DVD
because of thinking about her real life. She was such a beautiful
young woman, and so young to die. I just wanted to pull her out
of that movie and save her somehow. Hopefully, now she is with
the Lord.

The Legend Of Boggy Creek (1972).
Well after about 37 years I got to see what scared me so much
when I was a child. Now you have to consider my age, and where
I lived when I saw this movie. It was about as cheesy as I expected.
And the video transfer was horrible. It look like it was copied from
a bad VHS tape. Ole' Sasquatch might still be out there for all I know.
Rent it if you dare.

Incendiary. Pretty depressing movie.

Goodbye Solo. I liked the characters in this movie. Even though
Red West is in his 70's, he still looks mean enough to kick your a$$. I'd
say more, but wouldn't want to ruin the ending for anyone looking to rent
this.

The Glass Menagerie - I really loved this Tennesse Williams theater adaptation. The acting was good too. Katherine Hepburn plays a wonderful irritating mother.

Mr. Smith Goes to Washington - Nothing compares to Jimmy Stewart's diatrabe in front of the depression era US Senate. Fabulous story and even more fabulous story about what went on around the world when that movie was originally released. I've added what movies I haven't seen directed by Frank Capra to my queue. He's getting up there towards Hitchcock on my favorite directors list.

Adam.
An interesting movie about someone who
suffers from Asperger's syndrome. Not your
typical Hollywood romance movie.

A Perfect Getaway.
More like a less-than-perfect way to lose two
hours of your life. I had to fast foward though
the last half of the movie.

Uptown Girls.
I've been on the Brittany Murphy kick since the
tragic news of her death. Though I liked "The
Ramen Girl", Uptown Girls made me gag. I doubt
that I'm their target audience, but still...

I anxiously await "9", Terminator Salvation

The classic tale of the blind Samurai who wanders from village to
village searching for the sightless swordsman who long ago taught
her to kill.

I'm actually not familiar with this story. I had read about the movie
and saw the preview. It looks very interesting. Every once in awhile

This is not a DVD, but I finally got to see Avatar 3D last night. AMAZING. That is all.

that movie is amazing (the part where hometree, aka the biggest effing tree i have ever seen if my life, is the saddest part of the movie.) ..I heard that some people hated Michelle Rodriguez in this movie but i didn't find her that bad..granted some of her Horatio Caine one liners were a little lame but still..and Giovanni Ribisi is still one of the weirdest looking people i have ever seen but i still find him kinda cute lol.

the 3D thing hurt my eyes tho but i kept the glasses and poked the 3D things out so now i look like a nerd whenever i put them on..:D

Taskeshi Miike made an episode of Masters of Horror that got banned from the US because of a torture scene that was in it..i actually found the episode somewhere and the torture scene wasn't really all that bad...i mean..it would really suck if it actually happened to you tho =\

From Here to Eternity
Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid

I was surprised the beach scene in From Here to Eternity occurred so early in the movie and was over in nearly an instant. Don't know what else I was expecting... It made a much better still photo, perhaps that was the draw. It nearly was lost in the film entirely. Frank Sinatra was a gem in this movie. There was so much going on with the character Prewitt, other character building and footage of the bombing of Pearl Harbor, it made the ending seem almost laughable.

Butch Cassidy was almost futuristic in comparison to all the 1940s era movies I've been watching. It had the tell-tale presence of that early 1970s film style where there are scenes that the actors don't speak at all and the foley artist throws in a few odd sounds here and there. I will always love the bicycle scene though, the Raindrops song and Paul Newman hamming it up big time. He was so great in that movie. Robert Redford was hotter looking than all get out.

Not sure what's up next. I see Netflix added 1984 into my streaming queue... hmmm, so many movies... so little time.

:

I love the opening part with the card game so much I almost have the entire thing burned into my memory - - - - -

"You're a helluva CARD-player, fella! And I oughta know - 'cause *I'm* a helluva card player. And I can't even spot how you was cheatin'! . . . ."
[chairs scrape as everybody gets the hell outta there... ;) ]
"The MONEY stays and you go."
Then Newman comes in and supposedly tries to calm things down, but is really looking for a way to knock the guy out - but fails, and so says, "I can't help you, Sundance..."
" . . . . I didn't know you wuz the Sundance KID when I said you wuz cheatin'! . . . If I DRAW on you you'll KILL me!"
Sundance: "There's that possibility..."

I just absolutely love the performance from Newman and most especially Redford, especially the way his eyes track everything that moves - but when nothing's moving, he's just intensely staring forward, apparently in a rage; DEFINITELY 100% in gun-fighting mode. i.m.o. he played the whole scene with complete perfection...

P.S. - also . . .

"Somebody shout '1-2-3 go!' "
"1-2-3 go!"
[knocks him out]

Extract - Jason Bateman and Mila Kunis are in this movie and even though its suppossed to be a comedy its more of a drama. It was an ok movie.
All About Steve - Sandar Bullock was so annoying in the beginning of this movie that I almost turned it off but it got much better and I acutally ended up liking it. It has a good message in it.
500 Days of Summer - The movie started out slow but got better towards the end.
Overall it was a cute movie.
Funny People - not much funny about this movie since it was more of a drama but I thought it was a pretty good movie. It was nice to see Adam Sandler in a more serious role.

Ooh no, I am a huuuuge lover of the novels and I thought the film was absolutley fantastic! They did change his character yes, but the way the scriptwriter stuck to Conan Doyle's structure of the stories was fantastic. Best money I've spent going to see a film in a long long time :D

The Road

I was afraid to watch this movie, because Cormac McCarthy is one of my all-time favorite authors & I wasn't sure how they were going to pull this off.

I guess they did okay, considering that The Road is a rather special book, but they had to cut out a scene from the book that I think is rather pivotal and sums up what McCarthy was trying to say. Unfortunate, but understandable considering the nature of the scene. Also, they expanded the role of the Woman into a whole character almost, with the bones of a backstory, which I thought was unnecessary, but I guess Charlize Theron was bored that week or something.

I was pleased to see, however, that some of McCarthy's most beautiful lines were preserved in the film, particularly when the Man says of the Boy, "If he is not the word of god, then god never spoke."

Although, being the mature audience that we were, in the scene where Jimmy Stewart pours a frazzled Kim Novak (who just had a terrible nightmare) a shot of brandy and says, "Here, take this. It's just like medicine." -- the entire 400+ audience busted out laughing.
