Hi guys. Okay, this post will be a little long winded but it will be worth it. I promise.
I Can't Wait is one of my all time favorite Stevie songs. I had the 12" as soon as it came out and used to play it to death. I've always hated the fact that when they did the Extended Rock Mix they took out the break after the guitar solo with the little tinkly keyboards (you know what I'm talking about, the one where she does the infamous "hand dance" in the video, we've talked about it before). However, justice was served in the Rock Dub Mix where the little tinkly keyboard break was not only present, but it was extended and even carries on through the ending chorus. When I'd put the mix on a cassette I'd always edit the ending of the dub mix onto the extended version, which is no easy feat using a cassette deck, starting and stopping at just the right time, mind you. So when I was finally able to find the mp3's here on The Ledge and use sophisticated software to make my little edit I was overjoyed. I may have even posted it here somewhere ages ago. But one thing always bugged me. When you take recordings made into mp3's by fans they are often taken from different types of turntables, encoded at different bitrates and volumes and all that jazz, and can be very hard to mix. So when my edit got to my favorite part it never sounded quite right.
So today I go online and check the various music blogs that I keep in my feed reader, when I see the "I Can't Wait 12" " listed as a recent entry in one of my favorite blogs. I was overjoyed. Usually when this DJ posts a full 12", it was usually encoded all at the same time and perfect for mixing. I could finally do a great copy of my edit.
Here is the blog entry for those of you who are missing this amazing 12" record in it's entirety.

I did notice something rather odd when I began working on my edit. The Rock Dub Mix in this download has been altered. The ending chorus with my favorite little tinkly bit underneath it is missing. It seems that whomever encoded this did their own fancy ending work and added the end of the Rock mix to the dub mix. Either that or this was some other version of the 12" that I'd never seen before. I have no idea. So if you download this, be aware of that fact. I prefer the original dub mix much better.
However, in my tinkering with this track it did solve a problem I've never been able to put my finger on. The end of the original dub mix sounds great with the tinkly keyboards but when paired up with the rest of the Extended Rock Mix tends to run out of steam after you come out of the break, because when they put the tinkly bits in they took out a lot of the guitar. So when I made my edit like I have in the past, I decided that I would just take the tinkly bit from the break and add it back into the end of this new mix and the result was my favorite tinkly ending fitting perfectly in with the guitar part so the energy picks back up and the mix is better than ever! I get to have my cake and eat it to!!! And since I was mucking about I added a little surprise at the very end. If you're like me and loved the beginning of the 7" mix, it may make you smile.
I'm a little egocentric when it comes to music. If I really like a song and I find ways that I can change it to make me like it even more, I'll just go ahead and do it. I've always been like that. It usually involves mixing different versions together to get one final mix. At any rate. I totally made this for myself but maybe some of you might enjoy it as well. So here it is.

As a footnote, I like to give my mixes cool names but since I really didn't remix this and only really changed the last few minutes, I just called it the Special Rock Mix. Because it's really just the Extended Rock Mix with some special stuff added to the end. I hope you enjoy it. :)
